Before You Say "I Do"

Ah, June... a month for love and marriage and weddings. Before a couple says "I do," however, there are some important conversations to have about money and taxes. As unromantic as it may sound to a young bride and groom, talking about money is an important step to a sound and lasting marriage.
Talking About Student Loans

Tying the knot can have a big financial impact if one or both spouses bring college loans into the picture, according to Donna Rosato of Consumer Reports. In a recent article, " Getting Married? What You Need to Know About Your Student Debt," Ms. Rosato outlines some things that couples should consider as they merge not just their lives but also their assets (and liabilities). Here are three things couples should know when one or both lovebirds bring student debt to the marriage:
  • Loan payments may go up--or down. Income-based repayment plans will depend on how much the spouses each earn and how they file their taxes.
  • There's no one "right" answer to whether to file taxes jointly or separately. Income isn't the only factor, and it will depend on the type of repayment plan opted for by the borrower.
  • Reaching financial goals will take work. While tackling the debt, couples need to work together and that may mean some sacrifice on the front end to achieve long-term goals later on. Communication is key.
Whether you've just marched down the aisle or you're celebrating a wedding anniversary, conversations about money still can be challenging. Wheaton Celebrates a "Summer of Golf"

When the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced the establishment of the U.S. Senior Women's Open in 2015, it paved the way for some of the players who helped transform women's golf to participate again in a national championship.

This inaugural event will be held July 12-15 at Wheaton's iconic Chicago Golf Club, one of the five founding clubs of the USGA. Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co. is supporting the event through a variety of ways.

We are the proud sponsor of one of the 13 large golf balls painted by local artists and displayed throughout downtown Wheaton. Our ball, painted by the talented Patricia Melekus, stands proudly in front of our office at 211 S. Wheaton Avenue.

The displays are a project of the City of Wheaton Fine and Cultural Arts Commission and will be on display through August 31. You can see each ball and vote here for "Best Ball Overall." Only one vote per person so thanks for voting for ours! Members of the MMA & Co. team are volunteering throughout the event, too.

Happy Fourth of July!
June brings us not just weddings but also graduations and the lazy days of summer. We are anything but lazy here at MMA & Co., busy with school district audits and offering ongoing accounting and advising for our clients. We do hope you'll get a chance to pause and celebrate this Fourth of July, a time for family and friends, barbecues and celebrating our nation's birthday. Have a safe and happy holiday!
