Greetings from Director Hui Greetings

In honor of Building Safety Month this May 2015, we would like to emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and proactive in regards to the safety of our properties. We use these structures every day, whether it's at home or at work, and it is crucial that we have buildings that we are safe in.

As do most things, our buildings need proper maintenance and attention. As DBI performs inspections and responds to complaints of San Francisco's more than 200,000 buildings daily, we encourage property owners to do simple, periodic inspections of their properties. Doing these routine inspections yourself or with your tenants can prevent risks and potentially prohibitive costs. Also, addressing an issue before it becomes a problem will save time and effort for all parties.

As we celebrated the anniversary of the Great Earthquake of 1906 this past week, we'd like to ask everyone to remember SF's history and take measures to protect you and your loved ones. In working together, we will ensure San Francisco continues to be a habitable, great place to live. Read more about filing complaints and building safety month below.

Join Us for Building Safety Month!BuildingSafety

We invite you to join the Department of Building Inspection in celebrating Building Safety Month this May! Building Safety Month is a nationwide event, where we not only celebrate the structures that we depend on daily, but learn and understand our roles in protecting and preserving them. The theme for this year is, "Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes" and each week highlights a different theme, which include fire/housing safety, earthquake preparedness, water and solar safety. In partnership with other city departments, DBI is offering informative lunch-time brown-bags for each week in May. Visit our website or click on the links on the right to join us at one or all of these lively discussions.

Small business owners, are you looking to improve your storefront? In recognition of Small Business and Building Safety Month, legislation was passed to permanently waive permit fees for awnings, signs on awning replacements and pedestrian level lighting in May. This program was sponsored by Supervisor Katy Tang  in partnership with the DBI, Planning Department, Office of Economic & Workforce Development, and the Office of Small Business.
