SPOTLIGHT JOHN BANKHURST, FLEXERA CEO on TECH COMPANIES, ONBOARDING, RACE SERIES, HOLIDAY PARTY & SOCIAL MEDIA!
This newsletter feature highlights FEI Members and Sponsors doing great things. This month we feature John Bankhurst, Business Development Director at Salo LLC. Salo has been a long-time sponsor of the FEI Chicago Chapter. John is an active member of the IDEA and Communications Committees.

Increasing the visibility, acceptance and awareness of diverse talent has been a passion of mine for the last decade. Before joining Salo, I was a leader in LGBT employee resource groups with an emphasis on helping members of the LGBTQ community progress in their career. In 2020, the murder of George Floyd started a discussion on racial inequities and injustice, specifically in the Black community. As part of this conversation, I hosted a panel discussion on how the current issues on race and LGBTQ rights impact our daily lives in the finance and human resources worlds. I was honored to lead a discussion with a diverse group of business leaders, including FEI Chicago’s own Shari Franklin. You can watch a recording of this powerful conversation here: https://salollc.com/event-recording-race-pride-intersectionality-panel-discussion/

It’s important to keep this conversation on racial inequality going. It is my hope and I am taking active steps to avoid having it become just a trending topic for a few weeks. I am proud to work for Salo, a talent firm specializing in accounting, finance and human resources, as we are being intentional on our DEI efforts, and ensuring that we are finding the best talent from all communities, regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation and disability status. In addition, as part of the FEI IDEA Committee, I have been actively engaged in bringing about the Uncomfortable Conversations series, which has showcased thought provoking speakers and powerful conversation to the FEI Chicago Chapter.

Increasing awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ employees in the accounting and finance community is a long-time passion. I am a founding member of Out in Finance, a Chicago-based organization that unites individuals across the financial services industry to drive LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality. We advance workplace policies across the industry; collaborate with firms on events and engaging with the community; and provide a networking forum for LGBTQ+ financial services professionals. I am currently co-chair of the Events Committee and recently hosted a panel of Big Four Leaders to talk about their experience being out in Public Accounting. You can learn more about Out in Finance here: https://outinfinance.org/

In addition to my involvement with FEI and Out in Finance, and I am also a Board Member of Inspiration Corporation, a Chicago-based organization to aims to end the cycle of homelessness, Ravinia Festival Associates Board and St. Chrysostom Episcopal Church.

I would love to hear from you on how you are focusing on DEI efforts in your organization – you can reach me at johnbankhurst@salollc.com.

FEI Chicago is proud to have John Bankhurst actively making a difference! He is another example of power of one, and why the FEI community is so vibrant and impactful.

FEI Members and Sponsors... are you or another member or sponsor doing good and valuable work that you would like to share with the FEI Community? If so, let us know at: info@feichicago.org. Thank you!

The Role of White Americans in Disrupting Systemic Racism
Systemic racism is, by definition, any organization, program or policy which favors one group over another. Systemic racism exists where one population group receives a disproportionate share of opportunities, access or resources (e.g. jobs, mortgages, or education). In order to understand the origins and functions of systemic racism in America, we must understand our history and how it continues to shape society today. In this session, our 3rd event in the series, Dr. Donna Marino shared insights into our history and the role White Americans play in disrupting racist systems.
