Monthly Evening Program
From ENERGY STAR to EcoDistricts: Evolution of Sustainable Affordable Housing  PROGRAM
Tuesday, October 9, 2018
5:00 - 5:30 pm - Careers in Sustainability Networking Session
5:30-6:15 pm -Registration & Networking
6:15-7:30 pm - Formal Presentation

Since 2006, several sustainable communities have been planned and/or developed in St. Louis' challenged Near North Side. Three of these present living examples of the evolution of approaches to sustainable affordable housing:
  • Renaissance Place at Grand (a HOPE VI project) is a certified (Pilot) LEED for Neighborhood Development project that was built with new-urbanist and smart-growth principles.
  • North Sarah Apartments (a HOPE VI project) is an Enterprise Green Community and includes adaptive "live/work" spaces in anticipation of a change in the market.
  • The Near North Side (a Choice Planning and Implementation Community) is utilizing the tenets of EcoDistrict to expand sustainability and equity opportunities.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development's HOPE VI Program and Choice Neighborhoods Initiative required that a plan for People be put in place to help residents of redeveloping neighborhoods make progress toward self-reliance. For each of these Near North St. Louis developments, Urban Strategies has played a key role in designing and implementing comprehensive plans in collaboration with the community, providing support as neighborhoods phase from planning to transformation to sustainable and thriving communities. These sustainability sites showcase the best of resident-led community redevelopment that a neighborhood elevates and supports.

Celebrating World Green Building Week

Once again, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter contributed an article to the BuildMO newsletter in honor of World Green Building Week. Read on for Emily Andrews's thoughts on the Living Building Challenge, originally published in BuildMO Newsletter on September 24, 2018.

The Positive Impact of Buildings: The Living Building Challenge
By Emily Andrews, LEED AP O+M
Executive Director, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter

Last year, our article in honor of World Green Building Week explored Net Zero buildings - a building that produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. Now, let's take net zero to the next level with the Living Building Challenge. The idea behind Living Buildings is that they give more than they take, creating a positive impact on human and natural systems. Instead of just net zero, we are talking about net positive energy. Now add net positive water and waste into the equation, and imagine a building that is designed and constructed to function like a flower. A building that generates all of its own energy with renewable resources, and captures and treats all of its water. Like a flower, it operates efficiently and for maximum beauty; informed by and responding to the characteristics of its bioregion.

No one said this would be easy, that is why it's called the Living Building Challenge. It is meant to challenge and inspire all of us to think beyond the four walls of a building. How do our buildings impact the environment and climate? How do they impact our day to day lives, our mental and physical wellbeing? How can buildings, landscapes and communities be a solution to climate change while providing inspiration and beauty?
October 24 and 25

Join the U.S. Department of Education on the 2018 Green Strides Tour, October 24-25th, in Missouri, with the theme Living School Grounds.

The 2018 tour will showcase work in all three Pillars of the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognition award, and, this year, highlight how schools can use their schoolyards that include gardens, habitats, nature trails, and wetlands to engage with not only science, math, nutrition, and agriculture, but also art, literature, and social studies.  Through their hands-on, project-based learning, and citizen science on school grounds, students discover the joys of physical activity in the outdoors, as well as the benefits of nutritious, school-garden grown produce.  The use of schoolyards, along with other sustainable infrastructure and practices, help students deepen their understanding of the natural world and their connection to it, fostering stewardship values that will permit them to preserve our nation's most precious resources for years to come.

The Midwest Building Energy Codes Conference brings together stakeholders from across the Midwest to discuss how best to promote the adoption and raise compliance with building energy codes across the region. This FREE annual conference provides an opportunity to network, engage in building science and policy discussions, and learn from leading experts about current and future trends.

This year, MEEA is partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council - Missouri Gateway Chapter and the City of St. Louis to bring benchmarking back to the Midwest Building Energy Codes Conference. This half-day session will occur on the second day of the conference, November 29.

Attendees will learn the basics and benefits of the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager benchmarking tool and discuss concerns and opportunities with benchmarking. The day will also feature a "Benchmarking Carousel" - an interactive event providing real details on how to improve energy efficiency in buildings after benchmarking.

Conference attendees can register for the full conference or only the Benchmarking Session.
