Last year, our article in honor of World Green Building Week explored Net Zero buildings - a building that produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. Now, let's take net zero to the next level with the Living Building Challenge. The idea behind Living Buildings is that they give more than they take, creating a positive impact on human and natural systems. Instead of just net zero, we are talking about net positive energy. Now add net positive water and waste into the equation, and imagine a building that is designed and constructed to function like a flower. A building that generates all of its own energy with renewable resources, and captures and treats all of its water. Like a flower, it operates efficiently and for maximum beauty; informed by and responding to the characteristics of its bioregion.  

 

No one said this would be easy, that is why it's called the Living Building Challenge. It is meant to challenge and inspire all of us to think beyond the four walls of a building. How do our buildings impact the environment and climate? How do they impact our day to day lives, our mental and physical wellbeing? How can buildings, landscapes and communities be a solution to climate change while providing inspiration and beauty?

Join the U.S. Department of Education on the 2018 Green Strides Tour, October 24-25th, in Missouri, with the theme Living School Grounds. 

The 2018 tour will showcase work in all three Pillars of the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognition award, and, this year, highlight how schools can use their schoolyards that include gardens, habitats, nature trails, and wetlands to engage with not only science, math, nutrition, and agriculture, but also art, literature, and social studies.  Through their hands-on, project-based learning, and citizen science on school grounds, students discover the joys of physical activity in the outdoors, as well as the benefits of nutritious, school-garden grown produce.  The use of schoolyards, along with other sustainable infrastructure and practices, help students deepen their understanding of the natural world and their connection to it, fostering stewardship values that will permit them to preserve our nation's most precious resources for years to come.

The Division of Energy   of the Missouri Department of Economic Development, in cooperation with the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, is providing Building Operator Certification (BOC) training in Missouri with the generous support of Spire Inc.  BOC training includes nearly 74 hours of classroom and project work (7.4 CEUs) in building systems operation and maintenance. Each course in the series is completed in a one day training session. To earn a certificate of completion, participants must pass an exam at the end of each training day and complete five assigned projects. Early registration is encouraged.

REBATE: Upon completion of BOC Level I, students who are customers of Spire will be eligible for a reimbursement of $575.
