Students, Residents attend MAFP Fall Conference in Pickwick
Students and residents spent the weekend of Sept. 21-23 at the MAFP Fall Conference at Pickwick Landing State Park, just over the northern state line in Mississippi. They were able to take part in 7 hours of CME, networking with family physicians, and taking part in meetings. In addition to the MAFP Board meeting and MAFP Foundation Board meeting, the students and residents attended committee meetings, a Friday night barbecue and bonfire, and a Saturday night fish fry at the home of Dr. Bill and Linda Jackson of Corinth. MAFP covered their rooms and registration as part of their participation in MAFP boards.

Ambassadors Visit Destin with MAFP
Five days in Destin sounds like fun! The twelve medical students chosen as Student Ambassadors this year spent July 21-25 at the MAFP Annual Meeting in Destin, FL, getting to know each other, learning about family medicine at education sessions, and networking.

"I loved meeting physicians and seeing their passion for family medicine," one ambassador said. "It was great to see the future side of medicine that we as students do not always get to see."

They also provided invaluable help to MAFP staff -- they were in the thick of things, preparing for activities, helping staff events, working a booth in the exhibit hall, and selling Draw Down tickets and other items.

The Student Ambassadors had opportunities to meet practicing physicians, different residency programs, more than 80 exhibitors, MAFP leaders and Dr. Conrad Flick, former AAFP Board member. And d id we mention fun? In addition to some free time to enjoy Destin, students also took part in MAFP activities like golf, shard-art, the Academy Amazing Race, Family Fun Night, charter fishing, Bingo and Bay Day.

MAFP pays for the Student Ambassadors' hotel rooms and meals during the Annual Meeting.  Students apply to be an Ambassador for that summer, and the application for next summer is now available.

Financial Smarts for Residents/Students:
Make smart financial decisions in medical school and residency, and your future self will thank you! Here's some information to point you in the right direction.
Johnny Campbell, Rubana Khan, Van-Vi Le, Meg Mathis and Marco Garcia at the AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students. Le served as alternate delegate for Mississippi and the others were scholarship winners.
Students Attend Kansas City Conference
The MAFP Foundation awarded scholarships to four Mississippi medical students to attend  the AAFP's National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students in August.  The scholarship covered their meals plus travel expenses to Kansas City, MO. Three WCUCOM students, Johnny Campbell, Marco Garcia and Rubana Khan, and one UMMC student, Meg Mathis, were the scholarship winners.

"The serious, purposeful atmosphere of the conference made me proud to be a future family doc," Mathis said. "My favorite aspect of attending was being a part of a large group of like-minded young professionals in an environment that promoted professional development."

Residents Network at Annual Meeting
Eight residents representing each of Mississippi's four family medicine residencies attended the MAFP Annual Meeting in Destin this past July, including three from UMMC, two each from Forrest General and NMMC, and one from EC HealthNet.

To encourage involvement, MAFP offers steeply-discounted registration for residents to attend Academy events. At the Annual Meeting, it hosted networking events aimed at these young physicians, including an opening reception, a special breakfast with an AAFP speaker, and a closing reception. Residents were encouraged to meet medical students and also young practicing physicians.

Several CME sessions were specifically planned for residents and physicians just starting out, including "Start Well: The Basics of the Business of Medicine" and "Code Well," both presented by Dr. Nick Ulmer of Spartanburg, SC. Other CME sessions residents attended were: "How to be a Rock Star Doctor" and "Five Things I Wish I Knew Last Year."
UMMC student members at the UMMC family medicine luncheon for M1s were: Joshua Jackson, Jackson Browning, Sonny Hodge, Regan Maxwell, MAFP's Kay-Lynn Meador, Kaylie Bradshaw, Weston Eldridge, Wisam Beauti. Not pictured are Will Casey and Van-Vi Li.
100 New Medical Students Join MAFP
Current student members did the talking at the Family Medicine luncheon for University of Mississippi Medical Center M1 students on Aug. 9, and 100 students joined the Academy as a result.

MAFP and the UMMC Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) partnered to provide  lunch for each of the 165 new first-year medical students, during which MAFP staffer Kay-Lynn Meador and medical student members discussed the role of MAFP and the specific benefits of student membership. The presentation, plus testimonials from student members, encouraged 100 new members to join that day.

Family medicine appreciated the spotlight during the orientation for new students. Dr. Sheree Melton of UMMC Family Medicine department was present. Both FMIG president Will Casey and Miss. Rural Physicians Scholars Program director Dr. Wahnee Sherman also presented to the students. Many thanks to Beth Wilson of the UMMC Family Medicine department for coordinating the luncheon.

You can encourage other students interested in family medicine to join by sending them a link to this  and reminding them that membership is free!

WCUCOM to Shine Spotlight on  MAFP at October 30 Student Lunch
MAFP will meet William Carey University OMS1 and OMS2 medical students on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at a luncheon at WCU's College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) in Hattiesburg. Speakers will include Kay-Lynn Meador, Foundation and Workforce Director, and Adam Purvis, WCUCOM student board member. They will discuss the benefits of membership and how to get involved.

In other news at  WCUCOM:
  • About 15 WCUCOM third-year students visited the MAFP office in Ridgeland Aug. 28 for testing and will continue to visit once a month for the rest of the school year. They received a briefing and presentation from MAFP staff on the Academy's purpose.
At the FMIG booth Aug. 17 are Van-Vi Le, FMIG vice president; Will Casey, president; Dr. Lou Ann Woodward, Dean, School of Medicine; and Weston Eldridge, M2 representative.
UMMC FMIG Starts School Year With Activities
Family medicine was well-represented Aug. 17 at the UMMC Student Welcome Luncheon for medical students. At the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) booth, chapter leaders met new students and discussed opportunities for the coming year, recruiting students to join the organization.

The chapter has its annual Family Medicine Residency Fair planned for October 3, with more than 30 exhibitors already signed up, including residency programs and other health care organizations. FMIG also plans to participate in UMMC's Spooky U in late October, and has a speaker from Amboss (a medical learning platform dedicated to helping future physicians prepare for the Step 2 Clinical Knowledge exam) planned for November 7.
