Trans & Gender Equity in the YLP
J une 26th, 6:30 pm
Loisaida Inc. Center, 710 E 9th St & Ave C
Photo by Luis Carle. Pictured in the center: Sylvia Rivera.
Join us for two intersecting conversations:

6:30pm Revolution within the Revolution: Herstories of the Lords Party Women's Union.

Advocating for the total liberation of women, The Young Lords Women Union produced its own groundbreaking newspaper, La Luchadora, that addressed the specific socio-racial oppressions confronting Afro/Latinx women. Join Young Lords Members Iris Morales and Gloria Rodriguez to discuss the platform and activism of the Young Lords Party Women's Union and the Latinx feminist philosphy: Mujerismo.
Moderated by Johanna Fernandez, PhD.

7:45pm Sylvia Rivera: The Fusing Catalyst.

Sylvia Rivera was a Young Lords Party member (LES chapter) who was also an active voice and presence in the LGBTQ activism at the time of the Stonewall Riots. A native of the Bronx, Rivera was an icon of NYC's transgender community, a member of GAA (Gay Activist Alliance) and GLF (Gay Liberation Front), and founder of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries). Luis Carle, one of our participating artists and friend of Sylvia, has been documenting Boricua LGBTQ activism since the early 1980's, and will join Anthony Rosado to discuss Rivera's importance to their work, joined by Loisaida activist Juanita Ramos, co-founder of Com
it é  Homosexual Latinoamericano.
Moderated by Charles Rice-Gonzales, writer, long-time Bronx LGBT activist, co-founder of The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!).

This is a public program associated with Pasado Y Presente: Art after the Young Lords exhibition produced by Loisaida Center with the support of the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

Puerto Rico, Debt & Education
June 28th, 6:30 pm

How is the Puerto Rican debt crisis unfolding, and how is it affecting education systems on the island? How can we think about and understand the debt, and what, if anything, can be done about it? Audiences in diaspora on the Lower East Side and in Santurce gather to dialogue with organizers and journalists working on the island. Tembleque will be served. A new piece of music will be debuted by Artist-in-Residence Jocelyn Bonadio-de Freitas, who produced and curated this event along with Tara Rodriguez-Besosa of El Departamento de la Comida, in collaboration with :Pública.

FOOD

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS
The City of New York seeks artists interested in creating a public monument that honors Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. If you are such an artist, please APPLY to this open call.

On June 20, 2018 First Lady Chirlane McCray, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen and the Department of Cultural Affairs announced She Built NYC, a new effort to commission a public monument or artwork that honors women's history in New York City.

The monument will be the first permanent public art work honoring the legacy of trans individuals: Marsha p. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.
Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera founded STAR, a housing and support organization for homeless LGBTQ youth and sex workers; they were also leaders in the Stonewall Uprisings and lifelong advocates for LGBTQ rights, particularly around racial and economic justice for LGBTQ people experiencing homelessness and poverty. In addition to Johnson's and Rivera's work and advocacy for LGBTQ, homeless, and HIV positive youth - and particularly young people of color who were marginalized by broader LGBTQ rights efforts in "Gay Liberation" - they were also pioneers in early efforts to further disability justice efforts, particularly around ensuring meaningful access to affirming healthcare for all people.
If you would like to apply or to learn more about this opportunity click Here. If you have questions please contact  [email protected] .

Deadline for applications is October 1, 2019.

Note: This new Pride flag (used in this newsletter) highlights the beginning of the LGBTQIA+ Pride Movement in the US led by a Black Trans woman, Marsha P. Johnson and Trans PoC like Sylvia Rivera.  Concept Artist: Julia Feliz. Graphic Designer: Hayley Brown.
