The Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes was ordained and consecrated as the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark at 11 AM on Saturday, September 22, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ. The presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, led the service as chief consecrator.

Watch the NJTV coverage (starts at 16:58).

Photos of the consecration are included in the consecration weekend photo gallery.

You can still watch the archived live stream in its entirety, or watch this 17-minute highlights video:
The Rev. Brenda Husson, rector of St. James’ Church in Manhattan, was the preacher for the service. Read the sermon text, or watch the sermon video:
The service was a festive celebration, with music led by a choir of more than 300 singers, including a children's choir of more than 60. There was a mix of traditional and Gospel music, accented by a brass quintet, a jazz pianist, African drums and bagpipes, as well as the traditional organ. The service opened with a liturgical dance. Clergy lunch & photo op with the Presiding Bishop
The day before the consecration, Friday, September 21, the clergy of the diocese met with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry while clergy spouses met separately with Mrs. Sharon Curry, then the two groups joined for lunch.

First Sunday as Bishop
On Sunday, September 23, the newly-consecrated bishop was formally welcomed at Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral in Newark at a 3 PM service of Choral Evensong, and was seated in the cathedra, or bishop’s chair, that is symbolic of the bishop’s office.

Earlier that day, Hughes led morning worship at an outdoor service for the combined congregations of the Episcopal churches in Jersey City. Read the Jersey Journal article.
Photos of both Sunday events are included in the consecration weekend photo gallery.
Presiding Bishop's visit inspires St. Paul's, Paterson
The Presiding Bishop’s primary task in the Diocese of Newark was to consecrate Carlye J. Hughes as the XI Bishop of Newark, on Saturday, September 22.

But while he was a guest of the diocese, the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry also provided an energizing boost to a recovering urban parish, with a rousing Sunday sermon at St. Paul’s, Paterson on September 23. Read more, and see the photo gallery.
