How You Make A Difference
Pictured above,
Emma at Day on the Farm, 2018; Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant 2018; and Miracle League 2018

Meet Emma Kearby.   She is an awesome, super-out-going 17 year old that has participated in Society for disABILITIES' programs since her Mom, Melissa, met Executive Director Marci Boucher at the dry cleaners!   Melissa was wearing a picture button of her daughter.  Marci asked her if her daughter could ride a bike as Bike Camp was approaching.  Since then, Emma has participated in many programs including Bowling, Day on the Farm, Miracle League, the Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant, Prom, and TopSoccer.

Emma has Down Syndrome and she knows she is "Super Unique".  When not in school, she enjoys singing and dancing.  And it is her brother that she loves the most!

Since Emma enjoys Society programs so much she personally keeps track of when her favorites are and reminds her family so she won't miss one.  Melissa stated that Society programs give her the opportunity to participate in activities outside of home and school as well as trying new things.

Her dream is to sing (and win) on America's Got Talent.    In the meantime, she is pleased to participate in the programs Society for disABILITIES offers.  These programs provide Emma the opportunity to interact with her friends -- as she has made many over the years and most important meet people like her.  Emma's family is greatly appreciative of this opportunity to see her in activities not thought possible before that day in the dry cleaners.

2nd Annual Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant

Thank you Modesto 500 Lions Club for the wonderful, 2nd Annual Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant.  It was a wonderful day for all who participated and attended.

Congratulations to our new princess'.  Elizabeth "Lizzie" Mussman was crowned Miss Stanislaus Teen Spirit Princess and Nora Kerr was crown Miss Stanislaus Little Spirit Princess.  The pageant likes to highlight friendship as part of the contestants' spirit.  This year the teen best friend was presented Casey Holiday and the little division best friend was presented to Michelle Ortiz.

We are grateful to the sponsors, donors, advertisers, and volunteers.   Please see listing in the program.  Click here for the spirit pageant program.

Prior to the pageant there is a Princess Luncheon!  Princess Belle joined our participants.  Lunch was provided by Frost Bakery and Crave Cafe.  It was wonderful to see the interaction.  It is not everyday you are able to lunch with Royalty.  The princesses' also enjoyed the company of visiting local royalty including the Dairy Princess, Miss San Joaquin County, Miss Delta Valley, and Miss Delta Valley's Outstanding Teen.

Many volunteers from the Society and from the Modesto 500 Lions Club lent a helping hand with set-up, clean-up, front area, back-stage and the luncheon.  Thank you for your help!

Thank you all who made a magical day for our participants.  Yes, there are plans for a pageant next year!  The date will be announced when secured.

A Note from Marci Boucher,
Executive Director

Hello!

Some of the best memories are made in summer and this year is no exception.

We kic ked off this summer making memories to last a lifetime at the Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant!  Thank you to the Modesto 500 Lions Club for hosting this wonderful event which is the only event of its kind in our area.  The young ladies had lunch with a princess and then felt like one during the pageant.  One of the greatest outcomes was the girls making new friendships to continue having great memories.  (see article above).

Riding a horse is a fantastic memory!  Those who attended the annual Day on the Farm now have that memory!  Thank you to Jim and Patti Sanchez at Sanchez Farms for hosting another Day on the Farm!  This annual program is the highlight of the year for many of our participants.  Day on the Farm creates lots of smiles whether it is getting your face painted, riding a horse, petting a goat, going on a hayride, planting seeds, feeding a horse, or having Freckles the Clown make you a balloon animal.  Great memories are made for the entire family.  Thanks also to the Oakdale Lions Club for their continued support with a BBQ lunch.

Summer is a great time to ride a bike!  If you know anyone that doesn't know how to ride a bike and wants to learn, please tell them about Bike Camp 2018.  It is from July 9 to 13 and is open to anyone 8 years old or older.  Bike Camp uses specialized equipment so almost everyone can learn to ride a bike in just one week, five one-hour-sessions. Learning to ride a bike will not only be a great memory but a life skill that will never be forgotten.
Ideas to beat the heat this summer (as well as make memories) include our Adapted Water Ski program.  There are seven Saturday's scheduled for Adaptive Water Ski.   There are very few disabilities that would prevent participation in the sport of water skiing!

Memories may also be made in the air-conditioned Bowling program!  Bowling is always fun and happened twice a month.

The County and Cities have once again proclaimed June as Disabilities Awareness Month. We are all pleased of this increased awareness on the challenges people with disabilities face every day.   Please remember to See the ABILITIES in everyone -- disabilities awareness is every day!

The Community Brunch and Wild West Gala committee are meeting.  If you would like to help, please let us know.  These are not only great events they provide needed funding that support our programs.

As always, we could not offer as many programs without your support.  On behalf of all our participants, the board of directors, staff, and myself thank you from the bottom of my heart.  You are making a difference creating amazing memories in people's lives right here in our community.

Sincerely,

Marci Boucher
Executive Director
