New on the CNS Blog: Playing an Instrument Changes Our perception of Music
The musical instrument you play, or played as a child, likely has a big impact on how you perceive music every day. In a novel new study looking at beatboxers and guitarists, cognitive neuroscientists found that areas of the brain that control movement were activated in the musicians' brains but not in non-musicians' brains.

The Department of Psychology and the Department of Statistical Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a joint (67% Statistical Sciences, 33% Psychology) tenure-stream appointment. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin on July 1, 2019.
We are interested in candidates from psychology and statistical science whose research program advances both disciplines. The research will take place at the Mesulam Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center. The CNADC contains an NIH-funded Alzheimer's Disease Center. Extensively characterized patients and controls of the Alzheimer's Disease Center will be available for the candidate's research. In addition to multi-modal neuroimaging (e.g., structural and functional MRI, diffusion imaging, and PET), electrophysiological brain mapping capabilities will also be available. Translational research related to novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches will be encouraged. Depending on the research areas of the successful candidate, the CNADC brain bank will enable investigations on the post-mortem correlates of in vivo cognitive and structural disease markers. Qualified candidates will be expected to establish an independent laboratory synergistic with existing CNADC programs on cognition and imaging in dementia. This is a research enhanced faculty position partially funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund VISTA (Vision: Science to Applications) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/.
The successful candidate is expected to engage with and benefit from the VISTA program led by York's internationally renowned Centre for Vision Research http://cvr.yorku.ca/ and focused on the intersection between biological and computational vision. The VISTA program is supported by a total of $120 million in funding over a seven-year period. The incumbent will receive enhanced research support, a reduced teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds for the duration of the program. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Psychology or a related discipline. The incumbent will employ neuroimaging (particularly fMRI), potentially combined with other techniques, to study the neural basis of human visual functions such as attention, face and object perception, multisensory integration, spatial memory, and/or visual-motor integration. The incumbent should demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in teaching and have an outstanding research record demonstrating excellence or rising eminence in their field, and a proven ability to attract substantial external, peer-reviewed research funding and to train successful graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. A research program with clear health application will be considered an asset. The successful candidate is expected to work with other VISTA investigators in the life and computer sciences and foster linkages and applied research with VISTA partners in the hospital, industrial, government, and national/international academic communities. The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and supervision of honours students in the Department of Psychology. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively and will be expected to contribute through service to the department, faculty, and university. Training in statistical methods, mastery of English speaking and writing, reliable transportation, and experience working with human subjects are required. We seek outstanding and highly motivated applicants with a strong interest in affective and cognitive Neurosciences to work on a multidisciplinary project involving functional brain imaging (fMRI) and virtual reality. The goal of the project is to apply novel tools to study brain systems implicated in emotions and their components in naturalistic conditions We also have strong interests in using other (neuro-)physiological measures (EEG, eye-tracking, skin-conductance, etc.). Strong methological skills in imaging analysis and programming are desirable.
The position is offered at the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences (http://www.affective-sciences.org/) and the Cognitive Systems section of the Department of Neuroscience, both located in the Campus Biotech (https://www.campusbiotech.ch/), in the center of the city of Geneva, Switzerland.
The candidate will be integrated in the Laboratory for Neurology & Imaging of Cognition, led by Prof. Patrik Vuilleumier (https://www.unige.ch/medecine/neuf/en/research/grecherche/patrik-vuilleumier/) but he/she will also have strong links with other research groups working in signal processing and virtual reality laboratories on Campus Biotech and at EPFL (Lausanne).

The Learning and the Brain Lab at Penn State University is accepting 1-2 graduate students to enter the Cognitive Area doctoral program in Fall 2019. Our research focus is on the cognitive and neural processes that support complex pattern learning. Given known constraints on the human brain, how do learners extract the information they need from the environment, often without realizing they are doing it? Our lab uses a combination of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques (fMRI) to probe learners' sensitivity to both the simple associations and network-level structures around them, with a particular focus on which patterns best facilitate learning. Aims and Scope: Cognitive Neuroscience publishes high quality empirical and theoretical papers on any topic in the field of cognitive neuroscience including perception, attention, memory, language, action, social cognition, and executive function. The journal covers findings based on a variety of techniques such as fMRI, ERPs, MEG, TMS, and focal lesion studies. Open call for abstracts for Special Issue of Cognitive Neuropsychology: The role of schemas in memory and other higher-order cognitive abilities. Guest editors: Irene P. Kan, R. Shayna Rosenbaum, Mieke Verfaellie

Schemas have been defined as superordinate knowledge structures that reflect commonalities extracted across a number of experiences. They guide our current behavior and thoughts and, in turn, are modified by new experiences. How schematic representations are formed, updated, and activated in ways that can both enhance and constrain our experience has historically been studied within cognitive psychology, but data from neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience stand to greatly enhance our theoretical understanding of these processes.
For this special issue, we welcome submissions that examine how knowledge structures are formed, affect online processing of information, impact processes involved in memory and future thinking, and serve to optimize and/or bias decisions. We invite submissions of innovative empirical research and reviews that examine these issues in adults or children using lesion, neuroimaging, brain stimulation, and computational modeling approaches. Reflecting the aims of Cognitive Neuropsychology, submissions must (1) use neural data to make explicit contributions to theories of cognitive processing and representation or (2) use cognitive theory to enhance understanding of the diagnosis, treatment or neural bases of deficits in schema formation or use in clinical populations. Under special circumstances, papers that include cognitive-behavioral data in non-clinical populations will be considered if they make clear how they inform brain-behavior relations.
Please submit a tentative title and abstract of up to one page in length to [email protected] by Friday, November 16th, 2018, with the email subject line "Cognitive Neuropsychology Special Issue". Decisions on proposed manuscripts will be made based on appropriateness of topic, rigor, and a balance of themes to be represented in the special issue. Invitations to submit full manuscripts will be sent by December 12th, 2018. The deadline for full manuscript submissions will be April 15th, 2019. Submissions will undergo the standard review process maintained by Cognitive Neuropsychology. Publication of this special issue is planned for Winter, 2019 and articles will appear online as they become available.

Perceptual consciousness and cognitive access

The question of how our subjective experiences (colours as we see them; sounds as we hear them; tastes as we feel them, etc.) can be accounted for in terms of brain processes is regarded as one of the biggest unsolved problems in science. One of the most pressing questions is whether the neural basis of this 'perceptual consciousness' is independent of the neural basis of cognitive access mechanisms that make reporting and reflecting on conscious experiences possible. Subjective experiences are directly available only to the individual having them, so subjective reports seem to be the only measure of being conscious. However, if perceptual consciousness is independent of the access mechanisms underlying subjective reports, then the neural correlates of reporting will confound experiments relying on subjective reports to measure the presence of conscious experiences.
This theme issue focuses on this central problem of consciousness research by bringing together a cohort of international experts to tackle this question from neural, behavioural and theoretical perspectives. The papers critically discuss state-of-the-art empirical findings, identify methodological problems and propose novel approaches.
