The world faced its first prison boom in the late 1700s. Prior to the prison boom, society relied mostly on torture and exile. Since the 19th century, incarceration has been a controversial topic all around the world. America specifically has a reputation for unjust and outdated prisons. This presentation will explore how prison design can impact the lives of not only the inmates but also the lives of prison guards. What sort of design elements work for penitentiaries and which design elements tend to negatively impact those who inhabit these spaces? In other words, how does design and psychology intersect in regard to confinement?

Sarah Kelly is an architectural intern at the Filson Historical Society. She has a B.A. in architecture from the University of Kentucky and she is currently working towards her masters in historic preservation at the University of Kentucky.

Note that the AIA/CKC Annual Meeting with the election of officers and directors will take place at the beginning of the program.

Learning Together: Fostering a Culture of Sustainability

Date:  Friday, October 19, 2018
Time:  8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location:  University of Louisville Student Activities Center Ballroom
2100 S Floyd St. Louisville, KY 40208

Hosted by:  Louisville Sustainability Council
City of Louisville Office of Sustainability

Keynote Speaker: David Orr

True sustainability comes from groups of individuals sharing common expectations, norms and habits that benefit our environment and community every day - a culture of sustainability. It happens where each of us lives, works, and learns.

Join us for the 2018 Louisville Sustainability Summit where we expect that over 250 members of our community will connect to discover successes, identify opportunities, and creatively learn from each other about real steps to create this culture at your place of work, worship, and learning. This is Louisville's annual opportunity for everyone interested in sustainability to gather under one roof. Our Keynote speaker will be David W. Orr, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics (Emeritus) at Oberlin College, and founder of the journal Solutions, who will be addressing how the creation of a culture of sustainability leads to a revitalized local economy, elimination of carbon emissions, and restoration of local agriculture. The vehicle for this lesson is the Oberlin Project. Dr. Orr has authored eight books and is well known for his pioneering work on environmental literacy and ecological design.

University of Louisville will host the event in the newly renovated and expanded Student Activities Center and provide the unique opportunity to learn from their journey to establish a culture of sustainability.

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana - Inspire
Event:  Junior Achievement Inspire 2018
Location:  Kentucky Exposition Center - South Wing B
Date:
Oct. 23, 24 and 25 (Load-in Oct. 22)
Time:  8am to 11am or 10:30am to 1:30pm

JA Inspire is a coalition of educators and industry leaders, led by Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana. At the center of our work is a powerful event that will be massive, measured both in square feet and impact. This capstone experience is an interactive, hands-on, career exploration for 10,000 8th-9th grade students. Inspire will showcase careers at regional businesses, non-profits, government, and educational organizations. With 100 interactive career stations and 400 mentors, students will "step into the shoes" of employees from all industries.

Problem: There is little to no public awareness as to what value Architects provide, their role in crafting a better society, how good design can impact communities, or what career opportunities within Architecture look like. There is also underrepresentation of women and minorities in leadership roles within firms and the profession as a whole.

Solution: JA Inspire 2018 - Participation in this event gives us a seat at the table with other industries and disciplines. The start of a larger, cultural conversation. It also gives us the chance to impact and change the lives of young people. We might just inspire someone to become an Architect and change their world.

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana: Last year 9,100, 8th and 9th grade, students came through the 4-day event.
