A Message from the State Librarian

On Friday, September 28, IMLS issued a press release stating, “Today, President Donald J. Trump signed into law a $853 billion spending bill to fund the federal government through the end of September 2019. The legislation includes $242 million for IMLS, which is roughly $2 million more than the FY18 enacted budget.
IMLS received an additional $1 million for its research, evaluation, and data collection, as well as a $1 million bump in its administration budget. IMLS’s Grants to States Program, funded through the Library Services and Technology Act, as well as its other museum and library programs, received level funding from FY 2018.”

Get Involved: Powered by your Library is coming to
Safford
and
Tuscon
, with a new training for library staff that work with volunteers. Participants will come away with various tools and resources that will enable them to perfect their volunteer game. Those who are new to volunteer management will develop the necessary foundation to begin successfully recruiting and engaging with volunteers.
At the end of this training, participants will understand and gain implementation skills in:
- Utilizing skilled volunteers at the library
- Identifying what motivates volunteers and how to ensure the right “fit”
- Designing volunteer job descriptions and targeting recruitment plans
- Getting staff buy-in and other strategies for successful volunteer engagement
We encourage libraries to attend in a team of at least 2, preferably a library manager and the library staff that works directly with volunteers. If that is not possible (or you are one in the same) we understand and know you will benefit from participating. A working lunch will be provided.

Library Development has purchased a selection of registrations for online courses offered by the California State Library's Infopeople. These courses are available to Arizona library staff on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be expected to complete your course and fill out a short evaluation form before enrolling in another.

With election day just weeks away, issues like energy, border security and immigration are on the news, social media, and on people's minds. Your library can provide a safe, trustworthy place for community members to discuss theses key issues by hosting
FRANK Talks. A new selection of topics for FRANK Talks is is now available, including talks on issues important to voters, like "Energy in an Uncertain World" and "Borders, Walls and Immigration."
FRANK Talks are interactive conversations on ideas that matter. Attendees discuss issues of local and national importance in local libraries at a 75-minute program. FRANK Talks encourage participants to weigh facts, provide the opportunity to put them in context, and consider different points of view. The goal of FRANK Talks is to inspire people to practice the skills of citizenship – to listen respectfully and engage thoughtfully with one another on important issues that affect our communities.

The Arizona State Library's Writers in Residence in Libraries program promotes writing in communities by connecting local, professional authors to serve as Writers in Residence at local libraries. Writers in Residence spend time at the library during their residency composing new works and providing education for community members.
The Writers in Residence Mini-Grant program provides funds for stipends and marketing for two (2) writer’s residencies, each for a three month period. Applying libraries will select two authors to host in their library, one for a residency from February-April and a second for May-July. Recipient libraries will receive a grant of $4,800, designated for writers’ stipends, which is set at $800 per month.

The
Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) is offering a new professional development opportunity for archivists. The program enables practicing professional archivists to travel to an archival institution within Arizona to participate in a week long training program to enhance specific skills, such as accessioning, digitization or preservation.

IMLS's tool uses the information from the
Public Library Survey to allow users to not only find out data about libraries across the country, but to compare libraries side by side based on different comparison criteria, such as the number of programs, service area or visits. Knowledge is power, and you can arm yourself with a wealth of statistical knowledge about the state of public libraries that are comparable to yours. With the search and compare tool, you can walk into your next city council, HR or budgetary meeting with the confidence that comes from knowing the facts.
As IMLS continues to update and improve the tool, they are looking for feedback from people who use it. If you make use of the search and compare tool, be sure to click the link in the upper right hand corner of the page to provide the feedback they need.

If you are looking for more ways to assist members of your community who experience blindness or low vision, visit the White Cane Day information fair. The Phoenix VA will hold a
White Cane Day Information Fair
, Wednesday, October 19th from 10am-2pm.
This information fair is available for all individuals who are interested in learning about blindness/low vision information, especially geared towards hospital staff, veterans, anyone with visual impairments or blindness and their family members and friends.
Participants include local non-profit agencies, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, advocacy groups and VA services.
