PRPS President TRI Message

Wow how can this be true? The Therapeutic Recreation Institute (TRI) is celebrating 50 Years of providing continuing education, networking and good times to certified therapeutic recreation specialist, activity directors, recreation directors and other professionals.

So my PRPS story truly started when I began attending the TRI on a regular basis back in 1991 to collect my needed CEU's for certification. Yes, if you do the math I have been to more than half of the Institutes. The goal for most is to get CEU's but so much more happens once you are there. Each TRI has been fabulous and I continue to learn every time I attend. I also get the chance to catch up on the life and work happenings with colleagues that I only see once a year all while meeting new people who have the same passion in their work which is to make a difference. There is no other therapeutic recreation conference I have attended that equals the TRI. The TR branch should be very proud of achieving this milestone.

I am registered and invite you to join me in Lancaster at the Double Tree Resort, June 6th-8th. We will reminisce about all the memories we have of being at the TRI from the dorm rooms to our first hotel experience in Grantville, PA. The keynote speeches to our all-time favorite educational sessions/speakers, the Award Winners over the years, to the popular basket raffle and our very late night socials where so many lasting friendships have been formed.

If you haven't been to a TRI now is the time to start a new tradition like I did 27 years ago. It has made a world of difference in my career. Invite a peer to join you this year as we celebrate the BIG 50! Be sure to ask them to become a PRPS member if they have not yet joined our awesome society as the professional benefits are truly amazing!

Hope to see everyone in a few weeks to celebrate!

Get Outdoors PA Webinar: Diversity/Inclusion Initiative & Thoughts in Outdoor Programming

Wednesday, May 23 from 1-2 pm (Free)
Keisha and Tarsha Scovens, co-founders of Let's Go Outdoors, have spearheaded initiatives to diversify participation in the outdoors. Their mission is to connect city communities to outdoor experiences. Since 2013, Let's Go Outdoors has piloted and offered programs in urban communities, primarily neighborhoods in Philadelphia, which have engaged diverse youth, adults and families in outdoor programs. Programs, such as There's Good Outdoors in My Neighborhood, Nature Intervention, Outdoors 1, 2, 3!, and The Watershed is an Open Book, have offered positive connections and successful diversity/inclusion outcomes for Let's Go Outdoors. Keisha and Tarsha will discuss these initiatives, highlighting challenges, strengths and strategies that may help other organizations seeking to diversify their audience engagement. In addition, their goal is to hold a brief conversation about diverse audience participation in outdoor programs.
Kids to Parks Day - Saturday, May 19

On May 19, 2018, join the 1-million + people at hundreds of national, state, and local parks, and public lands across the country taking part in the 8th annual NPT Kids to Parks Day (KTP Day). KTP Day is a nationally coordinated day designed to connect kids and families with their local, state, and national parks. By coordinating a wide array of park activities on a single day, Kids to Parks Day attracts new park goers and helps connect existing park enthusiasts with local organizations in the hopes of creating park advocates and stewards.

To learn more, register an event, or find an event near you, visit parktrust.org/kids-to-parks-day. Follow NPT on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, #KidsToParks.
So get out and go celebrate this national day of outdoor play!

New 2018 River Sojourn Map

Check out the interactive map for sojourns planned statewide this year. River sojourns are guided paddling trips on a waterway with breaks for lunch and other educational programming. They offer both new and experienced paddlers an opportunity to enjoy outdoor recreation and learn more about a specific waterway, while in the safety of an experienced guide.
Seeking TRI Awards & Theme Baskets

Awards, Awards, Awards - what better way to recognize a job well done then to submit for an award! Do you know of a new professional who is excelling in the field? Then honor their enthusiasm with the Outstanding New Professional Award. How about that wonderful program that the residents are still talking about? Check out the Outstanding Special Events Award. What about that Volunteer that you can't do without? Honor them at our Awards Luncheon by nominating them for the Volunteerism Award. View the award categories and submit nominations by May 23, 2018.

Help us celebrate 50 years of the TRI and donate a basket! In order to raise the money for scholarships, we are in need of some donated theme baskets, gift cards, or free passes to sporting events or theme parks. Please consider donating a theme basket or new prize that can become part of our Basket Raffle. If you are willing to assist with a donation or if you have any questions, please contact Becky at bkandrac@masonicvillages.org or call 717-367-1121 x33646. Donations from all branches of the PRPS organization will be accepted.

Why you should call your local elected officials before July 2
by Heather Cuyler

In 1993, the General Assembly, by a combined vote total of 244 to 3, established the Pennsylvania Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund (Key 93 or Keystone Fund) with a dedicated funding source of 15 percent of the state's Realty Transfer Tax. The realty transfer tax is collected at a rate of 2 percent on the value of real estate when a property changes ownership (with some exceptions.) The buyer and seller each pay half of the tax with the state government ultimately receiving half of the total tax revenue. Following the General Assembly vote, 67 percent of Pennsylvania citizens voted to supplement the Keystone's permanent funding stream with a one-time infusion of $50 million in bond revenues.
