Stumped by the financial aid process? This workshop is geared towards prospective students and parents who are facing the challenge of applying for financial aid. In today's world it is not just necessary to have the technical skills to perform a job. Employer's today want employees who exhibit personal traits that enable them to interact effectively with customers and their coworkers. CDO Workforce Helps 10 Individuals
Become Certified Nursing Assistants
CDO Workforce
assisted 3 people with attending
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training at ONC BOCES, which
completed in May, 2018. CDO
also assisted 7 people with attending DCMO BOCES CNA training, which c
ompleted in June, 2018, for a
grand total of 10 graduates assisted by CDO Workforce to attend CNA training that completed in the last two months!
Of the individuals that
CDO Workforce helped to attend CNA training,
nine have become Certified, and
one individual is expected to be Certified by the end of July.
One individual, who graduated in May, has already been
hired as a CNA in the Otsego County area and two individuals have been hired as CNAs in the Chenango County area.

Bridge to Employment and Academic Marketplace (BEAM)
New
Outreach Coordinator for Broome-Tioga
Mamie was born and raised in Utica, NY where she now resides with her 3 children. Mamie has
more than 20 years of experience working within the health and human service field providing outreach, counseling and case management services to individuals in need.
Mamie
recalls that some of greatest moments as a care manager was
working with individuals to obtain their GED/High school diploma and then
helping them to develop a service plan to obtain their college degree, which they did.
"What a blessing to witness the joy, pride and growth in these individuals," Mamie says.
She
looks forward to helping others achieve this same goal through the BEAM program. Mamie will
cover cases in Broome-Tioga. She is stationed in the Utica office.

BEAM Success Story:
BEAM Enrollee Completes Cosmetology Training
BEAM Enrollee Elizabeth Robinson has
completed her Cosmetology training at
DCMO BOCES.
The
curriculum included 1000 hours of class time, consisting of
200 hours of theory and 800 hours of Lab time.
Elizabeth
walked for graduation on
Monday, June 11th, 2018.
She is
now in the process of
setting up her NY State licensing exam to
become a Licensed Cosmetologist.

BEAM Success Story:
BEAM Enrollee Becomes Certified Nurse Aide
Heather Hubbard has provided home care and residential care for the
past six years with the
goal of becoming a CNA throughout the entire time.
She has
often worked two jobs in order to
provide for her family. Because of this, for many years,
Heather was unable to attend trainings offered in our area.
The BEAM program assisted Heather by helping her to create a resume and secure employment at the Oxford's Veterans Home as a Unit Assistant. This allowed her to work a set schedule, and begin to explore options for schooling.
Heather enrolled in an online Associates program for Medical Administrative Assistant through Bryant & Stratton, with the idea that she could use the degree at completion to work in the healthcare field, if or when she could no longer do the physically demanding nurse aide work.
In the meantime, a CNA training became available through DCMO BOCES that would work with her schedule.
Heather was again assisted by the BEAM program, this time in seeking funding through CDO Workforce and preparing for the training and testing.
Heather successfully completed the training and state licensing exam while at the same time maintaining her online classes for college. As of June 7, 2018, Heather attained her goal and became a Certified Nurse Aide!
Heather's plan is to gain employment in the field and give back to the community working in a long-term care facility.

"On-The-Spot" - Customer Success Story
"T.C." was
anxious and distressed when he came in because he had
only a couple of weeks left on his Unemployment Insurance Benefits and he is the
sole breadwinner in the family.
CDO Partner & NYSDOL Workforce Professional Susan Carimando went over his skills with him and
developed his resume right there on the spot. She then
set him up to meet one-on-one with a Client Manager at Chobani for a
open position matching his skill set.
He i
nterviewed for the position that Friday, and
by Monday, T.C. was hired for the position!
Chobani was grateful for the referral, and TC is no longer anxious-- and he is looking forward to his new job at Chobani!

Success Stories: Helping Veterans
In partnership with the NYS DOL Local Veterans' Employment Representative, CDO Workforce helped
two Veterans get back to work within the first two weeks of June.
Our first veteran, "A.C.," was working part time and was looking for full time and more stable employment. In a team effort, Sidney CDO Assistant Director Maggie Gilbert, assisted "A.C." with his resume and interview process. "A.C." interviewed with ACCO Brands Sidney for a Maintenance Electrician position, and was offered the job paying $24 hour. "A.C." served in Navy, full active duty, for four years as an Electrician. "A.C." also has a Journeyman Electrician License.
Our second Veteran, "F.V.," was hired at Amphenol in Sidney in the Plating Department. "F.V." was hired at $20 hour. She served eight years in Navy Reserve as a Construction Mechanic.
During the month of May, six Veterans were assisted in getting back to work.
During the month of April, four veterans were assisted in getting back to work and two veterans were helped in returning to work, for a total of six.
During the month of March, six veterans received assistance in getting back to work.

CDO Workforce attends DCMO BOCES Job Fair
Staff from CDO Workforce attended the DCMO BOCES job fair that was held at the DCMO BOCES Chenango Campus on May 31, 2018.
Both graduating students and adult learners from the CTE (Career Technical Education) programs attended the job fair to browse different employment opportunities in our area.
CDO Workforce staff was able to meet with students to provide information on the services that CDO Workforce provides, as well as encourage them to come to our office to register and begin utilizing the services available to them.

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce Announces 'Sustainable Success' Award Winner: Oneonta Job Corps Academy
The
Otsego County Chamber of Commerce has announced
Oneonta Job Corps Academy as the recipient of the NBT Bank, Quality of Life Award in recognition of their programs and services.
Oneonta Job Corps Academy (OJCA), opened in 1980 and is now one of the 126 Job Corps centers found around the country that offers dozens of different vocational opportunities to under-privilege youth ages 16 to 24 years of age, along with individuals with disabilities.
The Oneonta Job Corps Academy hosts nine traditional trades in three different clusters: Medical (Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Medical Admin Assistant); Automotive (Auto Technician and Auto Collision and Repair); Construction (Electrical, Facility Maintenance, Cement Masonry, and Tile Setting).
In addition to these nine initial trades, OJCA is also home to the SMART Grid Advanced Training program that includes Overhead Lineman, Underground Residential Distribution, and Smart Meter and Instrumentation Technician.
"OJCA continues to be more and more involved in the community," says the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce. "First and foremost, it is a source of employment for nearly 150 people living within the local region. Both staff and students have performed thousands of hours of community service across the region including helping with parking for community events, assisting at the Susquehanna Animal Shelter, the Salvation Army Sunday Meal with a Message, Art Festivals, and so much more."
"OJCA was involved with the Oneonta Airport project, a two-year renovation project that incorporated the use of about half a dozen trades, including Facility Maintenance, Cement Mason, and Electrical. OJCA has hosted or co-hosts community events such as that Annual OJCA Community Ballgame every August complete with free admission, contests, prizes, and of course ...fireworks!"
"Most recently Oneonta Job Corps in partnership with Hudson Valley Community College, SkyOp, and the Oneonta Municipal Airport, is offering an exciting new Advanced Training program for Drone Pilot. Ten students will prepare for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot exam to become a licensed commercial drone pilot."

Grads of Life - Introducing Employers to the Business Benefits
of Working with Opportunity Youth
The
Grads of Life Public Service Announcement campaign initially
launched in September 2014 and, to date, has
received more than $81 million in donated media support.
In partnership with the Ad Council,
they have recently launched a new series of ads to
address this critical employment gap and
introduce employers to the incredible business benefits of working with Opportunity Youth -
unemployed young adults between the
ages of 16 and 24 who are an often
an overlooked talent pool.
A
particularly powerful piece of the new campaign is a
series titled 7 Second Resumes, in which
Opportunity Youth spend seven seconds-the average amount of time a hiring manager spends reviewing a resume-
describing their unique attributes that add to their value as employees.
The qualities and skills that these young people have acquired throughout their life journeys cannot be itemized on a resume, but are often the very core competencies that employers look for in their employees.

The EDD Memorial
Fund is a 501(c)3 no
n-profit organization dedicating to creating sports programs for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.
Their goal is for people with disabilities to experience freedom, independence and adventure through participation in sports. They partner with colleges and sporting organizations to provide various adaptive sports opportunities in Central NY, Eastern PA and Central/Northern VT.
Mission
To provide sports opportunities for children and adults with disabilities.
Vision
The EDD Memorial Fund vision is for individuals with disabilities to build self-confidence and purpose, and to believe that they can do anything to which they set their minds. "Our belief is that by teaching a young woman who uses a wheelchair how to ski, for example, we are also helping her learn to believe in herself and in her potential."

Cost of Training Weighing your Business Down?
Use On-the-Job Training to Help Cover the Costs!
The CDO Workforce New York One-Stop System has On-the-Job Training (OJT) Funds available.
The OJT funding provides companies with an incentive to hire and train individuals who lack the specific skills or experience for a job.
OJT is appropriate for occupations where classroom training is not suitable and for which specific job skills can be learned by a worker while engaged in useful work.
This program is for full-time (at least 32 hours per week) employment and cannot be used for seasonal, commission, or 1099 employment opportunities.
Business OJT users apply their own methods to teach workers the new skills necessary for successful employment within their company, while the trainee is performing productive tasks.
OJT contracts can be written up to $2,000 per trainee depending on amount of training provided.

Part-time Scholarship Award application is Available
In order to apply, students must meet eligibility requirements, including:
- be a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term;
- be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;
- have graduated from high school in the United States, earned a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally approved "Ability to Benefit" test as defined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department;
- be matriculated in an approved undergraduate program at a SUNY or CUNY community college;
- be enrolled in at least six but less than 12 credits per term;
- maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher;
- be in a non-default status on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any NYS award; and
- be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a NYS award.
To complete the application, you will need:
- Your transcript for the term prior to fall 2017, spring 2018 or fall 2018.

Adult Education Literacy programs at

Students are assessed and
offered the most appropriate program option to
ensure success.

Classes are offered year round, and we offer open enrollment. Free classroom instruction is offered during the day at the DCMO BOCES campus in Norwich and in the late afternoon/evening at CDO Workforce in downtown Norwich."
Those students who qualify may
also enroll in DCMO BOCES specialized
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Training Programs at no cost.
They have
recently expanded their
Distance Learning Program for those
students who are unable to attend regular classroom sessions. This f
ree Home Study Program is an i

Bassett Healthcare Partnership for Nursing Opportunities Program
The Partnership for Nursing Opportunities Program allows students to complete their associate degree in nursing through SUNY Delhi. Following completion of the first year at SUNY Delhi, the student may secure employment as a Patient Care Assistant 2. Upon completion of the second year, the student/employee will earn an Associate of Science in Nursing and will be eligible for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
The Bassett - Hartwick College program is designed for Registered Professional Nurses interested in earning a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing degree while working. RNs will work 12-hour shifts each week at Bassett Healthcare and receive two days of on-site nursing instruction by Hartwick College faculty at Bassett. Following completion of two full calendar years, the Registered Nurse will earn a BS.
Full tuition support is provided to the eligible employee/student in either program with a payback commitment following program completion. Bassett is currently seeking candidates for entry into the SUNY Delhi and Hartwick College at Bassett Medical Center.

DCMO BOCES Adds an Additional CNA Class -
Class starts in July
- The class is going to run Mondays-Thursdays (four days a week) from 8:30 am to 3 pm.
- Class is anticipated to start on July 9, 2018 and graduation is tentatively set for August 20, 2018.
- Students will attend classes at the Chenango Campus in Norwich, and then the week of clinical which is scheduled for August 6 - 10 will be done at an area nursing facility. These 4 clinical days will run on the facilities schedule and will be held, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- The week after clinical: NY State Testing will be completed on Thursday and Friday August 16th and 17th.
DCMO BOCES is also excited to announce the return of its Licensed Practical Nursing Program this fall.
The anticipated start date for LPN is Sept. 5, 2018.

SUNY Delhi Summer Youth Swim Lessons will be offered from 8am to 12pm Monday through Friday in the Kunsela Hall pool at SUNY Delhi.

Classes include an infant/toddler/preschoolers program, American Red Cross Levels I-VI.

Because of the
Global War on Terrorism, many
service members are returning from Iraq, Afghanistan, and other points in the Middle East with
combat-related injuries. Combat
exposes soldiers to potentially traumatic events on a daily basis, which can
result in psychiatric symptoms, such as those of
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Many returning soldiers are
filtering back into the workforce, and
PTSD concerns may arise in the workplace.
Employers of veterans (as well as the
veterans themselves)
need to be informed of the
issues that may arise when
readjusting to civilian life.
PTSD can manifest itself in a veteran differently than someone who has survived a catastrophic one-time event. The
traumatic events that accompany combat duty occur daily (for months at a time) without warning. Soldiers
endure these conditions with restricted food intake, lack of sleep, and harsh environmental conditions. Furthermore,
soldiers are trained to be extra vigilant and to
react quickly and decisively to
environmental stimuli. Thus,
readjusting to life at home can be
a difficult experience for some veterans.

While SNAP is intended to ensure that no one in our land of plenty should fear going hungry, it also reflects the importance of work and responsibility.
SNAP rules require all recipients meet work requirements unless they are exempt because of age or disability or another specific reason. (Children, seniors, and those with disabilities comprise almost two-thirds of all SNAP participants.) Forty-three percent of SNAP participants live in a household with earnings.
Some of these working individuals are ABAWDs, or able-bodied adults without dependents. ABAWDs must meet special work requirements, in addition to the general work requirements, to maintain their eligibility.

| More Food Products Can Now Be Sold From A Home Kitchen |
NYS Deppartment of Ag & Markets Doubles the List of Products
that Can be Sold from a Home Kitchen
The State Department of Agriculture and Markets have added 19 items to their list of products that can be sold directly from a home kitchen.
The new products include dehydrated/dried fruits and vegetables, trail mix, toffee/caramel apples and more, nearly doubling the total number of homemade goods that can be made and sold from a home.
These changes will allow small home businesses to increase their customer base and reach new markets, and are the latest actions taken to make doing business in New York easier, especially for small entities. Home processors are exempt from obtaining an Article 20-C food processing license and Article 28 retail food store license but are required to register with the Department.
"Ensuring the safety of our food supply is a critical function of the Department and that includes overseeing the home processors in our State. The Department is pleased to be able to expand the list of foods that entrepreneurs can safely make in their home kitchens, and that they can now sell to the public from their home business and also online," said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

Free Meals Are Available This Summer for Children & Teens
Free meals will be available for children and teens across New York at more than 3,000 Summer Food Service Program sites.
The Summer Food Service Program was established to ensure that low-income children, 18 and younger, continue to receive nutritious meals when schools are not in session. USDA Food and Nutrition Service administers the Summer Food Service Program at the national level and the New York State Education Department administers it at the state level.

"Summer meals are critical to thousands of New York children who might otherwise go hungry during summer break, when they no longer have access to breakfast and lunch served at school," NYS Education Department's Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa said. "Summer food programs positively impact children's growth and development by offering nutritious meals and encouraging children to develop healthy habits at a young age."
"High quality summer meals provide daily energy and help make sure children are healthy and ready to learn when they return to school in the fall," NYS Education Department's Commissioner Elia said. "We work closely with the USDA to administer this incredibly important program, to help make sure that our students don't go hungry during the summer."
The majority of New York sponsors begin operating Summer Food Service Programs on July 5, 2018.
