From the Principal June Johnson

October Greetings Carver Elementary Families!

The first month of school has gone by so quickly as staff implemented the key programming components of Reading & Math Flex Groups, Den Time, and WIN Time.

This year in math and reading, we are "flexing" into grade level groups.  Students are learning in groups with others at different levels, but in the same grade. Teachers continue to work to meet student needs in small groups whether at, above or below grade level.  Students performing at the 97%ile or above on their MAP, Measure of Academic Progress, tests are considered for the next grade level if it best meets their needs.

Thank you for giving us the first month of school to get settled into our routines.  If you would like to join your child for lunch at anytime, just check in at the front office and head down to the cafeteria.  If you get here ahead of time, please make yourself comfortable on the chairs in the hallway area.  Please remember to bring cash or check to pay for your meal.

THANK You to the Carver Elementary PTO and all the family and staff volunteers who helped to make Pizza and BINGO Night a huge success!  We estimated over 600 people attended this great event!  Watch for information about our upcoming Family Fun Night November 15th!

Most Sincerely,
June Johnson, Principal

Art Room News
This year of art started with drawing challenges to grow in skill, creativity, and expression. The students are beginning to understand the 'why' behind making a work of art--sometimes it is to practice a skill, sometimes it is to show a unique and imaginative idea, and sometimes it is to show who we are and what we care about. Then we introduced tools for drawing and collage that students use during
studio work time, which is when the student has full artistic choice of what they feel inspired to create.
This month 2nd-5th grade was inspired by collage artists Romare Beardon (historic example from NYC) and Ashley Mary(living example from Minneapolis). Next month classes will earn painting as a choice in the studio! Fun and messy! Don't worry, it is all washable paints.

Personal Wellness News
sport_equip2.jpg
This year as part of Personal Wellness, students will be getting a half hour of classroom instruction on health topics with Mrs. Souvignier.  This will happen on one day of their six day rotation.  This month we have been getting to know each other and celebrating our differences.  We're also talking about communication skills and building strong friendships at school.
In gym, we're welcoming a new teacher this year!  Mr. Becker has joined our Personal Wellness team. He is coming to us from East Union and happy to be here! Please remember to send your students with tennis shoes and a note if your child has any medical restrictions from injuries.
We have an exciting opportunity coming up for students in grades 3-5.  3rd-5th graders have the opportunity to participate in the annual "Elementary Invitational" 1 mile running race at Lake Ann Park in Chanhassen.  The race will take place Thursday, October 11th at 5:25.  This is a fun event that exposes the kids to cross country running, which is an opportunity all our students will have when they enter middle school. Permission slips that detail the event will be available in the gym.  If your son or daughter would like to participate in the event, please have them ask for a permission slip and return it to their Personal Wellness teacher by Friday Oct. 5th .  Thanks so much, and as always, please feel free to contact us with questions.
