Before we launch into another hectic year, we wanted to tell you about the exciting year we just had!  Here's a recap:  
  • we made our own Public Service Announcement;
  • held our first parent workshop in Bend with Laura Rogan (Dyslexia 101), Mathieu Jazbinschek (Technology for Dyslexia), our student panel, and a viewing of, and discussion about the movie "The Journey of Dyslexia;"
  • organized the annual ORBIDA conference in March with Anita Archer;
  • had a workshop in Assessment and Testing in Schools with Jim Hanson;
  • continued our lecture series with 7 speakers throughout the year;
  • held Dyslexia simulations in Hood River, Portland, and at Pacific University;
  • showed off our newly formed student panel , that spoke in Portland, Bend, Hood River, and Vancouver, WA;  
  • co-sponsored a day-long symposium with Louisa Moats;
  • held parent support groups in Portland and Vancouver, WA; 
  • organized a Family Fun Day in October; and  
  • held our Annual Membership Meeting in November.  
If you are interested in hosting a dyslexia simulation or having our student panel present for you, please contact me.

2014 Holloway Award Recipient

 

This award is given for distinguished service to ORBIDA over many years.  Jim is a past vice-president of ORBIDA, works as a school psychologist for Portland Public Schools, and has been an instrumental partner with ORBIDA over many years through his work with OSPA and PPS.
Day-long Symposium with
Louisa Moats

 

ORBIDA, in partnership with Portland Public Schools, Decoding Dyslexia Oregon, and five other groups, co-sponsored a day-long symposium featuring Dr. Louisa C. Moats in January.  Dr. Moats shared her expertise on reconciling the Common Core State Standards with reading research, and Dyslexia 101, to an audience of more than 400 educators from around our region.

 
 
The 2nd Annual Parent Workshop

The first half of the program will feature Dr. Kelli-Sandman-Hurley and Tracy Block-Zaretsky from the Dyslexia Training Institute who will provide us with an overview of Dyslexia and strategies for advocating for your child in schools.  They've seen it all and are ready to share!!

The second half will feature the Student Panel, discussing their personal experience in public school.

Then, FACT-Oregon will help families create a person-centered plan that allows our students to develop a plan for themselves that incorporates their strengths and interests to use when dealing with schools.
