Navigant Research Publishes White Paper on Advanced Overhead Conductors

"Advanced Overhead Conductors: Changing the Value Equation for Utility Transmission Line Upgrade and New Build Projects."

Data and insights for this paper were acquired by Navigant through numerous sources that included conductor manufacturers, industry experts, government resources and end users, among others.

The independent Navigant report was sponsored by CTC Global and is provided to interested parties at no charge via the link below. The report describes and quantifies the sustained growth in the Advanced Conductor market, what factors are driving this growth, how Utilities and Industrials are using Advanced Conductors, and current and expected future market shares of the various conductors considered to make up the Advanced Conductor market.

Dave Bryant, Director Technology sat down with Anne McDowell, CTC's Vice President of Commercial Operations to discuss the report. To learn more CLICK HERE

PGCB Completes 3rd ACCC Conductor Installation in Bangladesh

Supported by contractor EPC- HG POWER TRANSMISSION SDN. BHD, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh completed its 3rd ACCC conductor installation in a very short timeframe.

PGCB selected 416.2 mm^2 (821.4 kcmil) Grosbeak size ACCC conductor to replace existing ACSR Grosbeak conductor on their 46 km 132 kV Bogra to Naogaon double circuit line. The ACCC conductor selected for this project was supplied by APAR and hardware was supplied by Dervaux.

Spans between the existing steel lattice structures ranged from 285 meters to 335 meters which included major highway, railroad and water crossings. About 80 percent of the project took place in wetland areas. Because of this in one area more than six kilometers of conductor was pulled in at one time using back to back reels that traversed four dead-end and 23 tangent structures. Back to back long pulls have been accomplished many times with ACCC conductor to minimize environmental impact and manage challenging terrain. Tesmec tensioners and Boda pullers were used by the crews supported by Master Installer N.J. Balaji and Regional Service Manager Sampangi Samudi.

To date, PGCB has installed over 750 kilometers of ACCC conductor.

CTC Global participates at NASEO's Annual Meeting

CTC Global participated as a sponsor and exhibitor at the annual meeting of the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO).

The theme at this year's sessions was "Energy Intersections and Innovations."  The meeting, held at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Michigan, included interactive sessions and discussion on transportation electrification, building-grid integration, and financing for energy innovation and infrastructure.

CTC Global's Dave Townley had the opportunity to discuss with a number of state energy officials the utility infrastructure energy efficiency policy efforts currently underway in the Minnesota Energy Office.

The year-long process is looking at the potential for energy and carbon savings harvested from an energy policy to increase the efficiency of the transmission and distribution system (also the generation system).

The "potentials" report is expected to be released by the Minnesota Energy Office in the next few weeks.  Several state energy officers have expressed interest in following (and possibly emulating) the Minnesota infrastructure energy efficiency policy efforts.
Introducing ACCC AZR Conductor Designed to Mitigate Heavy Ice Loads

How CTC Global and its ACCC Manufacturing Partners are Shattering Heavy Ice Loads

Unlike steel which will plastically (and permanently) deform and yield under extreme ice load conditions, the ACCC composite core is fully elastic. The benefit is obvious, but the drawback is that under extreme ice it can sag more than a conventional steel core conductor.

To combat this issue CTC Global offers many strategies:
In several designs we have simply increased the size of the standard 310 ksi ACCC core (for comparison, high strength steel is rated at 285 ksi), which can do the trick. We have also designed and fully tested a higher strength ACCC core rated at 375 ksi. We call this product ACCC ULS, which has been installed at approximately three dozen projects, worldwide. The ACCC ULS version also has a higher modulus which means it stretches less under extreme ice load conditions.

In some cases, smaller diameter ACCC designs can also be effective at minimizing sag under heavy ice conditions. Most recently CTC Global has introduced ACCC AZR conductor which consists of either a standard 310 ksi core or a 375 ksi core, either of which are then stranded with one or more layers of AT3 Aluminum Zirconium alloy strands. (see ASTM Standard B-941 or IEC Standard 62004).

At this time, two configurations have been developed and fully tested, that use the standard 310 ksi ACCC core. These products are known as ACCC AZR 826 kcmil Calgary and ACCC AZR 994 kcmil Toronto. The Toronto is essentially a Drake size equivalent with a 1.108" outer diameter, a larger .415" core (our standard ACCC Drake equivalent uses a .375" core) and has a rated strength of 44,500 pounds compared to our standard ACCC Drake equivalent at 41,100 pounds. For comparison, ACSR Drake is rated at 31,500 pounds.

The Calgary version is slightly smaller in diameter at 1.010" and rated at 39,700 pounds. It uses a .375" 310 ksi ACCC core and uses Type 1350-O fully annealed aluminum on the inner layer and Type AT3 Aluminum Zirconium alloy on the outer layer. We have other AZR conductor sizes in the queue to help our customers deal with challenging projects.

The take away is that we can help you find a cost effective and efficient conductor solution no matter what challenges you face.
