1. Academics Spotlight
The AVID Senior leadership group coordinate a guest speaker for all AVID students on Friday. Ted Lanes presented a “Ted Talk" to students as part of a focus on different careers and pathways after high school. Ted graduated from PV in 1981 as about his receivership practice, basically demonstrating real life cases of what happens when people commit any kind of white collar crime, the famous cases that everyone knows and the cases that he has worked on personally. He explained several legal concepts and court proceeding rules as well as how they related to the scams he presented. He called his presentation, “the graduate course they won’t teach you in college, but should”. He brought documents from past cases that he has worked on personally and at the end of his presentation gave some brief advise on how young people should manage and protect their money.

3. PVIT Spotlight
Engineering is very much alive and well at Palos Verdes High School!  The PVIT VEX Robotics team nailed it this weekend at the VEX California State Championships in San Diego.  After all three teams finished qualifying rounds in the top 6, two PVIT teams chose each other as alliance partners, and the third team paired with a Beckman team from Orange County for the Round of 16 playoff brackets.  All three teams competently advanced to semi-finals which is an automatic bid for the World Championships in April!

After experiencing some major problems on the field, the two-PVIT team alliance finished in 2 nd  Place overall -- but that wasn’t all!  Each team walked away with a highly coveted judges’ award – the freshman team of Kylie Welcher, Elijah Huang, and Tony Cha won Tournament Finalist and the Amaze Award for a robot which was consistently high scoring, and demonstrated a solid mechanical design. Aaron Guo, Tyler Ewald, Dominic Bidondo-Yore, and Noah Lin, won Tournament Finalist, Skills Champion, and the Excellence Award, the all-around highest judges’ award, and the third team of Zach Huang, Cole Welcher and Karl Velazquez won the Build Award for a well-crafted robot.

Congratulations to all three VEX teams for qualifying for the World Championships – this tightly-knit team has been working day and night for months, perfecting their designs, coding, practicing, and most importantly, collaborating and supporting each other throughout the entire engineering design process.

We are so proud of them!
