2018 Top Architects and Designers in the Middle East  | UAE
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat ( CTBUH Dubai ) recently hosted an exclusive social event in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects ( AIA Middle East ), focusing on the 2018 Top Architects and Interior Designers in the Middle East.

In an event that strengthened the sense of camaraderie and community amongst leading architects and interior designers in the region, senior representatives from the top firms arrived at the venue to be 'greeted' by an astonishing street magician, instinctively illustrating the fact that creative folk are in many ways like magicians - logic only gives man what he needs, magic gives him what he dreams of.
There is, of course, a real magic in enthusiasm - it spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment - and you could actually feel this enthusiasm in the air when Christian Vasquez, UAE representative of CTBUH and board director of AIA Middle East, did his thankyou speech and introduced Antony Wood, executive director of CTBUH, who delivered a video greeting to the attendees.

Building Dynamics "exploring architecture of change" | Egypt

This lecture surveyed essential concepts and significant past and current projects that deal with interactive, responsive environments, i.e. buildings that can change their configuration, appearance, and environmental conditions in response to patterns of occupation and context (and in return can shape those too). The principal argument is that change in architecture is far from being adequately addressed or explored theoretically, experimentally, or phenomenologically. The lecture discussed Kolarevic's latest book on "Building Dynamics", one of the first books to offer a coherent and comprehensive approach to this topic and provide numerous examples of cutting-edge work from leading designers and engineering firms. An essential lecture for professionals interested in the latest design techniques and mechatronic technologies, and for students taking design studio classes or courses in theory or technology at any level.

When an Architect Builds for Her/Him Self
Presented by: Dr. Ahmed Al Jowder
| Bahrain

Dr. Ahmed Al Jowder; Bahraini architect, urban planner & academic takes us through a journey of designing and building his own house, named Arwadan, in Arad, Bahrain.
When the architect comes to build for her/him self, he/she in fact plays multiple major roles in the design process, becoming the User, Owner and Designer. No doubt, this experience is subjective and reflecting on it enriches the progress of making design architecture. The lecture will cover the dilemma, interaction, and the issues tackled in the design process and explores solutions.

Alexandria & Alexandrian-ism "A History of Cultural Interaction"
Presented by Dr. Mohamed Fouad Awad
| UAE

AIA Middle East in collaboration with UAP Dubai Chapter organized this lecture which tackles the changing role of Alexandria with a special focus on the cultural interaction and its implications on the arts and architecture.
Alexandria all through its history and since its foundation by Alexander in 331BC, has been a hub for cultural diversity and interaction in the Mediterranean region.

Alexandrian-ism is the ultimate and most consummate symbol of multiculturalism, pluralism and eclecticism the world has ever produced, perhaps the strength of these values will be lessons for the rest of the world since this city represents a harmonious metropolis of passion, diversity, free thoughts and values of tolerance.

ARE 4.0 Retirement!

Anyone currently testing in ARE 4.0 should be aware of the following key points:

The last day to take an ARE 4.0 division in a test center is June 30, 2018.
Candidates who have not completed ARE 4.0 by this date will need to complete any remaining divisions
in ARE 5.0 to satisfy the examination requirement for licensure.

Now is the time to make a plan to finish the exam if you are currently testing in ARE 4.0.
There are several resources available on NCARB.org to help candidates make their plan. NCARB's
Customer Relations team is also available to help candidates understand their individual testing options.

Your rolling clock will not change if you transition to ARE 5.0.
Candidates must still complete the test within five years of their first pass-whether through ARE 4.0,
ARE 5.0, or a combination of both. Expiring ARE 4.0 divisions could impact the credits received in ARE 5.0when transitioning.

Prometric test centers fill up fast, so candidates will need to plan ahead when scheduling
their remaining divisions in ARE 4.0.
When the exam transitioned from ARE 3.1 to ARE 4.0, candidates encountered difficulty finding test
appointments in the final months before the exam retired. If candidates plan on testing in May and June,
they should book these appointments as soon as possible.

The ARE retake policy will remain the same. Candidates must wait 60 days before they can
retake a division of the ARE, and can only take a division three times within 12 months.
This means if a candidate has taken a division of ARE 4.0 since the end of June this year, they will only
have two more opportunities to take that division between now and the retirement of ARE 4.0. They
will also need to take their second attempt before April 30, 2018, to have the option of one more retake
before ARE 4.0 retires.
