Department of Defense (DoD) Needs Small Businesses
By George Griffin, North Carolina PTAC counselor A&T University
The Department of Defense is not meeting the Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) and HUBZone small business goals.

Socio-economic Categories:
  • SDB is at 8.17%, currently above the 5% goal
  • SDVOSB is currently at 3.38%, currently above the 3% goal
  • WOSB is currently at 3.99% below the 5% goal
  • HUBZone is currently at 1.76% below the 3% goal
The PTAC team is encouraging clients to become certified and to watch for, and respond to sources sought notices, and to otherwise attempt to contract with DoD. If WOSB and HUBZone businesses don't respond to the sources sought notices, the set-asides might go to Small Business and not WOSB or HUBZone businesses. Contact your local PTAC counselor and see if you can get certified as a WOSB or HUBZone businesses.
PTAC Client Success Stories
Trans- Utility Services
By George Griffin, North Carolina PTAC counselor at A&T University

Trans-Utility Services was created in 2015 to be an industry leader in transformer field services. Staffed with experienced Field Service Technicians they utilize the newest mobile oil processing equipment in the industry. Their equipment can handle the toughest jobs and the tightest deadlines. Equipment capabilities allow them to do; Installation, Maintenance, Oil processing and Testing. Trans-Utility Services has their corporate office in Maine and mobile equipment and personnel located across the country serving clients. Jim Scandrol, vice president of sales, contacted his local PTAC counselor for assistance as the firm expanded into the government market. During the initial sessions NAICs codes were selected and Jim completed his SAM registration. Follow-on sessions included looking for opportunities on Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) and researching several potential competitors and partners. Jim and his counselor began reviewing Trans-Utility's Government Marketing Plans for 2016 which focused on increasing brand awareness by attending government contracting events to network and gain additional training in this new market. The first event  attended was Opportunities 2016 in Asheville http://www.sbtdc.org/events/opportunities/ .

Trans-Utility Services obtained their first work on a government facility in the form of a subcontract with a large prime contractor in 2016. In 2017 they received a five year contract from the Navy for transformer oil testing, a PTAC counselor assisted with both bids/proposals. In the first Quarter of 2018 Trans-Utility brought a second big rig to meet the demand of 3 years of steady growth and servicing customers on both coasts. Their government market now includes municipalities such as Johnson City Tennessee;  Jim found the opportunity through PROBID. PROBID is a computer-based program that matches your products or services to bid opportunities from government agencies.

Trans-Utility Services is continuing solid growth in 2018 utilizing their management, relying on brilliant engineers, hardworking craftsman and working in tandem. This is all taking place while competing in a very competitive industry that demands safety.
