July 1, 2018: The (R)Evolution of Conscious Aging

There is a new and exciting story emerging about what it means to grow into our 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond. Counter to the ageist narrative dominating our society, many elders are claiming an emboldened empowerment of spirit, intellect, and humanity. Aging consciously, Elders are creating a global movement that benefits all ages, transforming our very understanding of the human journey.
Rev. Kurt A. Kuhwald has served seven congregations and three Community Ministries as a UU minister, including First Unitarian Church of Oakland. Conscious Eldering, Worker Justice, Climate and Racial Justice are ministries that occupy his heart and dedication now in his 75th year. Working with a community of active and conscious elders in the North and East SF Bay Area, he is excited about the emerging vision of elders because it offers a new story of human development and transformation for these challenging times. He is Co-facilitator of an Elder Salon in Oakland He is also ecstatic that as of July 27th he has been a grandfather for a year and nine months (but who's counting)!!

July 8, 2018: Curiosity May Have Killed the Cat....But It Continues to Cure Me

Growing up in small town USA, I heard the phrase, "Curiosity killed the cat," with frequency. I understood this to mean that curiosity was bad and I should mind my own business. However, as I have aged, I have discovered that curiosity not only allows me to discover more about others, but it enables me to stay humble. Come to find out why.
Becky Leyser is a spiritual director whose theology inspires her to provide a mirror to people looking to find the next, best step for themselves-for a specific situation, as a pathway out of or into, or just as a general way of being. Becky believes that we are all imbued with a spark of the Divine and it is our life work to breathe into that spark to make it bigger. Building this spark to a flame provides us with a relationship to the Divine while also providing us with a moral compass. If spiritual direction is interesting to you, reach out to Becky at

Summer is here and there are a few changes at UUCM for the summer months.
The choir is on vacation but Milton is still providing wonderful music. The 9:00 AM service continues as does the 10:30 AM service. Rev. Joy has retired but we will have interesting speakers from Starr King and our congregation.
There are no formal Religious Exploration classes but volunteers will lead activities on Sunday mornings for children. Child care is available.
The newsletter will be sent every other week starting June 28. See article below for specific dates.

Summer Sundays and Religious Exploration
|
|
Summer travel and family activities mean that regular Religious Exploration classes at UUCM for youth are on a summer break until August 26.
Our nursery and space for for the youngest children (0-6) will have adult supervision through the summer weeks and there will be a quiet activity table for older kids in the back of the sanctuary space.
Watch the newsletter for updates about Sundays where member volunteers may stage activities for all ages or notices about YRUU events.

ReZist is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman's original songs, a funny and forceful affirmation of Peace and Social Justice. "Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression," says Roy, "because in calling out the world's absurdities and laughing in their face, I'm affirming the real possibility for change."
Roy's songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime, and his videos have garnered tens of millions of views. He has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records. He's shared stages with Bill Maher, Ellen DeGeneres, Holly Near, Robin Williams, Arlo Guthrie, John Oliver, Kate Clinton and George Carlin, and tours the country constantly with his wife and co-writer Melanie Harby. He has played in all 50 states, mostly in UU churches.

UUs concerned with the Palestinian plight

Our group @ UUCM is adopting the label: UUPP,
i.e.
UU's concerned with the Palestinian plight.
Many are now reading carefully and collecting information through various media on this topic as
it is beyond critical, at this point. Many thanks to Nani Ranken, who suggested this article

There have always been prominent voices like that of the Talmudic Hillel sage: "Where there is no one, try to be a human being" (my somewhat modernized translation).
Sometimes I hear those words in my mind when soldiers are about to arrest us in South Hebron or when Israeli settlers try to kill us with heavy rocks, as happened last February 10 on the way from al-Tuani to Tuba. As has been the case throughout Jewish history, humane voices such as Hillel's are today at war with sanctimonious, atavistic ones such as those that now dominate the public sphere in Israel. But as (Michael) Sfard says in what might be the most important line of his book, 'The fight isn't over.'"

Collect Water/Stones During Summer

Don't forget to gather water and or stones from your summer journeys or staycations. We will use them in our ingathering ceremony on
September 9 with our new minister.

Between mid-June and August regular Religious Exploration classes do not meet, but we like to have youth-friendly activities available for UUCM kids and visiting families at a table in the foyer. Do you have a craft, game, or outdoor activity for ages 6 to teens that you would be willing to share on one Sunday?

SAVE THE DATE for the Autumn Auction on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 5:30-9:00 p.m. We hope this will be as successful as the auction last October. The rough scheduling is: 5:30-7:00 for silent auction and social hour (hors d'oeuvres, drinks); 7:00-8:30 for live auction and potluck dinner; 8:30-9:00 check out.
