COLLEGE NEWS
The value brought to the College of Architecture through our Professional Advisory Council (PAC) is immense and I was reminded of the exceptional partnership we share in affecting the future of the professions during last week’s meeting. Our members represent leadership of some of the most influential firms in the U.S. (and with global practices); leadership of practice in Nebraska, California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, New York, and Texas who embody the variety of size, focus, and experience in today’s contemporary practice world. Together, we are preparing and graduating emerging professionals who are educated with disciplinary depth and strength, coupled with deliberate education and experience in collaboration and leadership, and in a culture that values innovation and courage of conviction.

ARCHITECTURE
Last Wednesday, Katja Rinderspracher gave an informative talk on the ground-breaking work she and her students are doing in digital fabrication at the University of Stuttgart. The Lunch ‘n Learn was brought to us by alumnus, Benjamin Kroll, of RDG Planning & Design in Omaha. I was happy to see not only a respectable showing of students and faculty, but also a good handful of professional architects from firms like BVH Architecture in Lincoln. I hope to see more professionals at our events and will continue to nurture the connection between pedagogy and practice our program holds so dear.

In this spirit, I would like to support the AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) and encourage you to learn more about it. To that end, I have the pleasure to introduce you to AIAS president, Grant Moehlenhoff, who describes the organization as follows:
“AIAS is a student organization that.... More-
COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING
With housing costs in many urban areas spiraling out of control—especially in such popular cities as Portland, Seattle, Denver and San Francisco—young college-educated professionals, among others, find themselves unable to find affordable housing in cities where they would like to live. While Lincoln currently is not experiencing this phenomenon as dramatically as other cities, local planners and decision makers are beginning to see warning signs that a shortage of affordable housing could become a growing issue in Lincoln.
Twelve graduate planning students in the CRPL 990 Planning Studio this semester are working with the City of Lincoln Urban Development Department and the Lincoln/Lancaster County Planning Department on a research project that aims to identify possible programs and policies that would encourage or ensure affordable housing availability in the city. INTERIOR DESIGN
Did you know that the Interior Design Program also offers an MS in Architecture: Specialization in Interior Design degree? In addition to supporting a robust undergraduate program, our faculty dedicate a lot of their time to teaching, delivering and advising our graduate students through a 36-credit hour online graduate program. Our MSID Program, is a post-professional research and scholarly based degree, not a professional design studio based curriculum. This program had its first two graduates in 2007 and was a pioneer and leader in the development and delivery of an online master’s specializing in interior design Since its first graduates 11 years ago, the program has graduated 40 more students. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
As I write this week’s newsletter piece, I am in Chongqing, China, in the last week of a three week trip with a group of graduate students. Stepping out into the wider world has long been a part of the education and development of design professionals. This kind of experience is even more important today in our curated, internet driven world. Where ‘reality’ can be a carefully constructed illusion, designed to present a convincing, albeit often distorted, view of the world. The opportunity to actually experience different places and different peoples allows one to develop a richer understanding of the diverse world in which we live. Rather than the hyper environment of crated illusion, one gets to see the everyday along with the spectacular. More-
