Fourth Graders Engineer Invention Convention
|
On March 4, Lakehill fourth grade students gathered for the Invention Convention, a much anticipated event that tests students' abilities to link simple machines together in order to perform a task. The annual event is inspired by the works of cartoonist and engineer Rube Goldberg.
Goldberg was fascinated by how humans seemed determined to make the simplest tasks unnecessarily complicated, which is exactly what the fourth graders did as they set out to create their ridiculous, often hilariously complex, machines.
After careful planning, students built their contraptions out of scavenged materials, such as school supplies, duct tape, and cardboard boxes.
The Campsite turned on a camping lantern, while the
Arnold Palmer Lemonader prepared a tasty beverage. Many inventions solved common tasks, such as dispensing snacks or feeding a pet.
Inventions were judged on creativity, use of simple machines, and the ability to explain what steps in the invention required the most trial and error to perfect. If a particular mechanism failed to work as planned, students were given credit for the step if they could explain how they would adjust or replace the malfunctioning part in order to fix the machine. Students learned that plans and models must often be modified in order to achieve the desired result, and that inventors rarely get it right the first time.

Third Grade Celebrates Texas Independence Day
|
Lakehill third graders have been busy learning about the Texas Revolution in class, including the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836.
This year, a big outdoor celebration was planned to commemorate the day. The students came to school in their best Western attire, boots and hats included. Their beautiful artwork depicting Texas symbols hung on display.
The students' practice paid off as they sang "Texas, Our Texas" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas." After watching a performance of a country and western dance stunt team, the students showed off their own moves with some line dancing and, of course, the "Cotton Eyed Joe."
Parent Shelley Shook taught the students how to throw a lasso, and they enjoyed practicing their roping skills. The day ended with some classic Texas treats: homemade chili, sweet tea, and Bluebell ice cream.
A rootin'-tootin', boot-scootin' good time was had by all!

Senior Spotlight: National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
|
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Zoe Herrman
Zoe Herrman
is a Lakehill Lifer, having attended Lakehill since kindergarten. She enjoys all her classes, and especially likes biology.
Zoe is a member of the Varsity Cheer Squad, and has managed the Varsity Volleyball, Soccer, and Track teams. She also participated in drama and musical theater. In her free time, Zoe enjoys hanging out with her friends when she gets the chance.
Zoe has applied to Texas Tech University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Alabama. While she is excited for college, she is sad to leave the school and the friends she has made over the years.
Zoe's advice for young Warriors is, "Use the open period wisely. Having a free period to do work is a real benefit in high school." Zoe also recommends being on time and working ahead when possible.
