WELCOME TO HOMECOMING WEEK '19!
Today we kick off what promises to be an exciting Homecoming week for our Grenadiers. Each day has its own special events planned culminating in Saturday evening's Homecoming Dance. Be sure to get in the spirit by participating in the daily dress up themes (below)!
Thank you very much to everyone that worked so hard to make Open House a success last week (pictures below). It was a great pleasure as your new principal to experience what turned out to be wonderful evenings. I was so proud to see all of our families making their way about the campuses and meeting with faculty. We have a tremendous high school that offers so much and I think that really showed during Open House.
Please remember that tonight from 5-7 PM we will be offering the first of two October "Don't Fear the FAFSA" help sessions. Below you will find details on what to bring this evening. These sessions will be of incredible help since the FAFSA opened up on October 1st.
Finally, be sure to set aside 1 hour on Thursday evening for a special OCPS Parent Academy Virtual Event - "Digital Citizenship" -
details here. If you have yet to take in one of these online events, please try this week. Extremely well done, they are always packed with helpful information for our Grenadiers. The 1 hour is worth the time investment.

Homecoming SPIRIT Week is here! On each dress up day, students and teachers can win prizes for the best dressed! Judges will be out during A and B lunches, so dress it up, Grenadiers!

Homecoming Ticket Purchase Requirements:
- 2.0 unweighted cumulative GPA
- No media center obligations
- No level 4 referrals or suspensions from the 2019-2020 school year
- Students are NOT eligible to run for court or King/Queen with a level 3 suspension

Guest tickets first went on sale Monday, September 30. Guest forms should have been turned in by Friday, October 4. See Mrs. Andrews in 27-115 to pick up a guest form or get one at the Red and Black Shack during lunches.

TOMORROW! Picture Retake Day
|
Dean Stewart Photography will be on both campuses October 8 for picture retake day.
If you would like to have your pictures retaken or you missed picture day in August, please consider speaking to your English teacher to be released to the Principal's Conference room (1-130) on main campus (freshman campus picture site will be determined) to have your picture taken for the yearbook. If this is a picture retake, please bring your original picture package with you and Dean Stewart will retake your pictures for free. If you are having the pictures done for the first time, picture day fliers can be obtained from your English teacher or in guidance.

Area for Improvement
Being on time to class is important. This is why we have a bell system that reminds students to go to each class period. The warning bell rings two minutes before the actual bell. Students have plenty of time to make it to class. Please make sure that when you hear the warning bell ring, you are moving quickly to your class. Bell to bell instruction takes place in every classroom, so you don't want to miss a minute!
Additionally, this week we will have Progress Monitoring Activities take place in our state-tested classes: English Language Arts grades 9 and 10, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology and US History. Please make sure you get a good night's rest, charge your laptop and be on time to school!

Career opportunities in STEM fields and the USAF expand at Colonial.
On September 26, 2019, Colonial High School's Junior ROTC program entered a new phase of inspiring high school students' interest in the aviation industry. Colonial High School and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University are on a joint mission to increase the number of youth who are interested in developing a career in aviation.
In its third year of this endeavor, Colonial's leadership team purchased a flight simulator, supported by ERAU's flight simulator software, to give the JROTC students involved in the Flight Academy the opportunity to practice learning and flying in a safe environment.
Mr. Charles Ellis from ERAU traveled from the Daytona Beach Campus to Colonial High School to put the final touches on the simulator and spent some time working with the JROTC cadets on the simulator.
Colonel George Frazier, USAF (retired), the JROTC, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor at Colonial said this is a very important addition to our flight program because it brings some realism to the class and helps the cadets become more engaged and excited about learning the basics of flying. Colonel Frazier believes the flight academy is critical in keeping the AFJROTC mission of developing citizens of character devoted to serving their nation and community relevant in today's STEM-focused education environment.
Cadets who successfully complete the industry certification for the Small Unmanned Aircraft System Safety (SUAS) program will be recognized in the unmanned aviation industry as SUAS Safety professionals and qualify to train for and take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Unmanned Aircraft Remote Pilot exam.

Annual Grenadier Invitational
The Annual Grenadier Invitational included 11 schools from across Florida. Approximately 1,000 student performers participated and were adjudicated by a panel of ten judges. The event helped to raise funding to support the Colonial High School Band program.

The OCPS Assistive Technology Team had Ms. Minnear as a guest speaker Wednesday at their training to represent the profound student population. With the use of A.T. Devices, non-verbal ESE students are able to communicate and interact within their learning environment. EVERYONE has the ability to participate when provided with the right equipment and opportunities.

Portfolio and AP Studio Art students visit the Orlando Museum of Art
Portfolio and AP Studio Art students attended "Portfolio 101" at the Orlando Museum of Art last Friday. We received valuable information about what we should include in an Art Portfolio from a distinguished panel of professors from Art Colleges and Universities. We also toured the exhibits at the museum and some students were fortunate to meet and talk with artist, Stephen Althouse.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

THE POWER OF GRATITUDE
A recent study looked at three groups of subjects.The first had to note down only irritations and frustrations in the course of a week; the second had to note all significant events that they experienced of any type; and the third had to note up to five items for which to be grateful in their lives.They did this for ten straight weeks.
At the end of ten weeks the group that had kept up with their reasons to be grateful were the ones who felt best about their lives in general, had more optimistic expectations of the future, felt best physically, and believed themselves to have made the most progress toward their personal goals.
The lesson for our Grenadiers? Sometimes it is best to remember to count your blessings before getting all frustrated over the next problem that comes along. The power of gratitude seems to be a factor not only in happiness, but also in our health and efficiency.
