A Message From Mr. Robert Goodall
Monroe Township School District Acting Superintendent
On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to congratulate our administration, teachers, support staff, maintenance, custodians and transportation on a successful opening of the 2018-19 school year. The extreme heat and humidity presented many challenges to our school facilities during the first few days of school. Despite the heat our students arrived well rested, enthusiastic and determined for success this school year. The beginning of each school year presents so many opportunities for all of our students in the area of academics, athletics and co-curricular activities. I encourage each child to get involved with their classmates in our diverse offerings at each school.
Monroe Township High School was recently recognized as a top 100 rated high school in New Jersey by NJ Monthly Magazine for 2018. Every two years the results are published based on varied criteria. This year MTHS was rated # 99 in all of NJ, so congratulations to the staff and students for a continuing to perform and achieve with the very best and representing our community.
I had the privilege of attending several of our annual Back to School Nights at MTHS, MTMS, Woodland Elementary and Mill Lake Elementary. The programs and informative sessions at each school highlighted so many of the great programs and educational experiences for our students. I was overwhelmed with the attendance of so many of our parents and guardians who, despite their limited time, make themselves available to be an active part of their child's school community. A special thank you to all of our Parent Organizations for volunteering their time and being so supportive of our teachers and students.
As our district continues to grow, we face a number of tasks this school year that include our efforts to build additional schools and facilities, continuing to ensure school wide safety and the fight for additional state aid funding necessary to sustain our exemplary school system. I encourage all of our community stakeholders to be involved in some capacity to ensure our students have the best opportunity to succeed.

NYC Marathon & the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation
William Levier, a graduate of MTHS and Caldwell University, will be running the NYC Marathon on November 4th to raise money for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Though he is nearly halfway to his goal, every little bit of support helps. Please take a moment to read his story by following the link below.

Dear Parents and Staff,
We hope everyone is adjusting to school and settling into a happy routine. A GREAT BIG thanks to all the parents, faculty and staff for your support of the PTO. Our membership drive kicked off with a bang thanks to all of you!!
Our Fall Fundraisers are in full swing!
The PTO welcomed the amazing MTMS faculty and staff family back home with a delicious Pizza Buffet catered by our generous friends, The Doughfather. A special thanks to Superintendent Goodall, our fabulous leader, Principal Chanley along with all the outstanding Vice Principals for sharing their lunch break with us and supporting the PTO's efforts. The faculty was especially excited and grateful for the PTO Teacher Membership Incentive Program. The PTO gives back to the selfless educators who give so much of themselves to our children.
Our first PTO Sports Jersey Day Fundraiser was a big SCORE!! We raised over $200 and are still receiving donations.
MTMS PTO Membership:
Please send in your PTO Membership ASAP, $10 per family, by October 26th. One family will be randomly selected to win a gift card! Membership can be sent back in the Membership Envelope or in a separate envelope labeled: PTO Membership.
Fall Box Tops Contest:
Our first Box Tops Collection is due into school by October 19. Please send in your box tops to have your child entered in a contest to win a $10 gift card (1 gift card winner per grade). For every 25 box tops submitted, your child will earn 1 raffle ticket that will be entered into the drawing. The more box tops that are brought in, the more chances to win a prize! Please send in your box tops in an envelope marked "PTO Box Tops" with your child's name, team, and homeroom teacher.

OAK TREE EXPLODES WITH KINDNESS!
Each year in early September, Oak Tree students attend a Positive Behavior Assembly at which expectations and safety rules are reviewed, as well as an introduction to our school wide positive behavior incentive program, Rising Stars. In conjunction with the pillars of character, students are encouraged to exemplify these traits and are recognized for their model citizenship on a monthly basis. Our Ride with Character and Falcon Leadership are other initiatives that strengthen our goal of supporting the Whole Child.
This year's program also focused on the theme of kindness. The story Be Kind was read aloud to the students. Each class also received two pieces of paper confetti on which they collaborated on different ways to be kind. The confetti were then place a special bulletin board with the message Oak Tree Explodes with Kindness. In addition, a new Kindness Bench was installed on our playground as part of a Girl Scout project for one of our high school seniors. It is evident that the staff and students of Oak Tree, given a choice, are choosing kindness on a daily basis.
Oak Tree Recognized for Charitable Efforts
Oak Tree School, its Student Council members, and advisors, Kim Synarski and Kaitlyn Kohlhepp, were recognized by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, New Brunswick Lodge #6. The representatives of the non-profit organization designed for the sole purpose of helping others, provided lunch for the student council representatives. Three plaques were also awarded to the school and the advisors for dedication, commitment, and generosity of time to children who could use a helping hand. Each year Oak Tree collects gifts for children in need during the holiday season. Hundreds of presents, donated by students and staff, are wrapped and distributed by the Odd Fellows.
Oak Tree Enters the Shark Tank Challenge
Have you ever heard the phrase, "It takes just one idea?" Well the third grade students at Oak Tree certainly did and learned that just one simple idea can solve a problem and changes the lives of so many. The students researched inventors who were creative, determined, and motivated to persuade investors to give them money so they could begin making and selling their product. These third graders were then paired with a partner and designed an original product that could solve problems we encounter each day. They had to create a product name and a slogan, determine the price and reasons why, and describe what it does and how it helps people. But their project-based learning experience did not end there, lastly, they had to convince the "Sharks" (their parents) to choose their product and to invest in it. Visitors came to the classroom and circulated from station to station listening to their pitches. "Sharks" had clipboards and feedback forms so they could make a sound decision as they determined who had the best product. Winners were announced at a later date. So it seems as if the third grade students in Mrs. Luberecki's, Ms. Kirner's, Mrs. McGarry's, and Ms. Kohlhepp's classes were ready to tackle the "Shark Tank" challenge and succeeded!
Oak Tree School Healthy Living Night 2018
Did you know that there are over 2,700 different kinds of worms and that the largest one measured over 22 feet long? The staff, students, and principal at Oak Tree School learned those facts and
more on June 11, 2018 at their farm themed Healthy Living Night! Over 650 participants came out to stroll inside and outside of the building, experiencing a wide variety of activities designed to promote healthy living and mindfulness.
Outside of Oak Tree, students learned yoga poses, planted seeds, strolled through the newly opened Oak Tree Garden, made a mini Zen garden, toured an ambulance and the township Enviromobile, and created calming jars. These are only a handful of the activities that made the night such a success.
Inside the school, students learned about worm composting and poison control, meditated with soothing music and low lights, practiced physical fitness activities in the gym, visited the photo booth, and participated in a Scavenger Hunt.
Every station, designed by a committee of teachers at Oak Tree, made connections to healthy living, leading a balanced life, and general mindfulness.
Many students said the highlight of the evening was watching Mrs. Dinsmore eat dirt and their teachers sing and dance with worms!

MILL LAKE SCHOOL NEWS

Grade Student Council members have already got right down to business and organized their first spirit week at Mill Lake School! The 3
rd
grade student council members chose to do a September Spirit week where all proceeds would go towards the Embrace Kids Foundation. The Embrace Kids Foundation is a charitable organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life for families who children are facing cancer and other serious health challenges. Mill Lake School is lucky to have such caring and empathetic students,

The School Counselors, Madyson Hawes and Carla Catrambone, have already proven to fully embrace and support the "Whole Child" at Mill Lake School. Two amazing projects have been unveiled at Mill Lake school: Terrific Tickets and Calm Down Kits. Our school counselors at Mill Lake School recognize that supporting our students emotionally and socially is just as important as academics. Through positive behavioral support systems and providing students tools to manage stress, we are teaching our students mindfulness and relaxation techniques just as we would teach reading and math!

Barclay Brook Rock Garden
Last year, the staff and students at Barclay Brook came together to make a beautiful representation of acceptance, tolerance, and positive self-worth based on the book
You Be You
by Linda Kranz. This project was supported by the Monroe Educational Foundation through a grant that was issued last spring. Our school counselor, Mrs. Ragusa, and our art teacher, Mrs. LaQuay, worked closely with the members of the School Safety Team to bring art and guidance together to facilitate this project. The creation of the rock garden gave us the opportunity to join together as a school community and gave our students and staff the chance to see a visual representation of what can happen when we join in and celebrate what makes us all unique.

Barclay Brook's
Little Free Library
Last year Mrs. Nicole Midura, our school librarian, wrote and received a F.A.S.T. grant from the MTEA to purchase a Little Free Library. Last June the library was unveiled with the help of a very special guest -
Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez!
A Little Free Library is a non-profit organization whose goal is to get as many books into the hands of readers as possible. The process is a simple one; you borrow a book and leave a book in its place. You can return the same book that you borrowed, or leave a different one. Just as long as a book replaces a book!
Our Little Free Library is stationed out in front of Barclay Brook School. It is filled with children's books suitable for children of all ages, including picture books, chapter books, fiction and nonfiction. The borrowing is not limited to the children of Barclay Brook, but to all of the children in our local community. We have solar lights around the outside and a touch sensor light on the inside for nighttime borrowing!
