Collect of the Day
Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Prophetic Witness in Society
Almighty God, whose prophets taught us righteousness in the care of your poor: By the guidance of your Holy Spirit, grant that we may do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly in your sight; through Jesus Christ, our Judge and Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the same Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

God, our Creator, we are held in your everlasting arms,
Jesus, our Savior, we are healed by your wounded hands,
Holy Spirit, be present as we reach out to one another in love.

Reflection

"It is simply out of the question that God 'helps' the Germans or the French or the English. God does not even 'help' us Swiss. God helps justice and love. God helps the kingdom of heaven, and that exists across all national boundaries. The foolish mixing of patriotism, war enthusiasm, and Christian faith could one day lead to the bitterest disappointment. We will not join in drinking this intoxicating potion. We want to look steadfastly and unwaveringly to God, who loves everyone equally and who is above all the nations."

- Karl Barth, 1914

ON VIEW THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN
It is with great excitement and with thanksgiving to the Garden Committee and Diane Churchill, Grace Church will be featuring the art work of a local sculptor Mark Attebery as part of our efforts to establish an ongoing Artist-In Residence program modeled after the program sponsored by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

Since its founding in the 1970s, the Artist-in-Residence program there has woven living art and artists into the fabric of the Cathedral, providing time and space for artists to respond to the Cathedral as a powerful creative statement in stone, and opportunities for the public to access their work.   As such, we hope that such collaboration between local artists and Grace Church will enable us to develop an ongoing relationship with artists and bring mutual awareness to the beauty of their work and that of our sacred space.

Through the remainder of the month of May into June, Mark Attebery has temporarily installed two pieces in memorial Garden for your viewing pleasure. When Mark visited the garden he was moved by its beauty and tranquility and the artistry that went into its creation.  Indeed, there is a wonderful and symbiotic relationship between his work and the natural beauty of the garden.  We hope you will take time to view his work as well as spend a quiet moment(s) in that sacred space.
If you would like to learn more about Mark and his works, please visit the following link: http://www.markattebery.com/

Parting Thought

To live in this world requires
that you leave your house every morning
and step into the wind
Every morning: with all your memories
on file and the future pinned to some wall
you will have to build and tear down and
build again. If you get there. If. If.

Into the wind: first you walk the dog whose
happy face belies the beast it is built on
Millennia behind you, that beast enters a cave
and decides whether or not to kill a child sleeping
by a fire. It does not kill the child
because it has been surprised by love
Both softened and sharpened by it, inexplicably
Inexplicably, to this day

And on this day, the wind relents
The morning star lifts itself into a changeable sky
and you, carrying extra weight, wearing
last year's clothes, start walking towards the train
Seeds that grew from ancient science digest in your stomach;
your bones begin to separate because science did not plan
this length of life; your heart slows down and you feel
the pressure of dragging a million, billion years
behind you. A million, billion lie ahead that you
will know nothing about

Thus, harnessed to time, facing the inevitable,
constructed by science and fed on inexplicable events
taking place somewhere in the middle of history,
your day goes by. Miles away, the ocean
murmurs to its own beloved creatures, a mountain
applies pressure to the weaving of a golden seam
And in your house, the dog wonders
if you will make it home again. And each day,
despite or because the performance of this feat
is both a mystery and a triumph,
you will. You do
