SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, October 10, 2019 regular meeting.
The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
- Potential Prop 39 Capital Facilities General Obligation Bond
- Approval of Selection of Consultants and Contracts to Manage the Disposition of the Crestmoor Property
- Board Direction on Staff Housing
- Annual Update on Outcomes Measured in the District Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)

Mills Grad Named Student of the Year
Shout out to Mills grad Desiree Lin, the
City of Millbrae
's Mayor's Civic Coordinating Council and the
Millbrae Chamber of Commerce
announced recently her as the 2019 Millbrae Student of the Year.
From the San Mateo Daily Journal, "L
in, a recent graduate of Mills High School, served four years as a member of the Millbrae Leo's Club. In addition to serving as club vice president, she participated in multiple service projects benefiting seniors and special needs children. She and her fellow Leos held many fundraisers to raise money for causes such as Relay for Life, the Millbrae Education Foundation, Northern California fire victims, and the Lions Club holiday gift card program. Desiree was also a member of the Mills Interact Club, where she served as club president and district governor."
Lin will be recognized, along with the Millbrae Man and Millbrae Woman of the Year at an awards dinner honoring extraordinary community volunteers on October 18.

The contest was presented by San Mateo County Office of Education, San Mateo County Safe Routes to Schools, and City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County.

San Mateo High School Student Named Finalist in National Science Competition
The Society for Science & the Public recently announced that San Mateo High School's Alexis MacAvoy is one of 30 finalists in the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS
®.
Alexis was one of more than 5,000 nominees in science fair competitions nationwide and over 2,300 students who completed and submitted an online application.
As a finalist, Alexis will represent San Mateo High School in a trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS Finalist Week, from October 25-30, 2019. Once there, Alexis will present last year's science fair project at the University of the District of Columbia to judges and the public and will participate in team science and engineering challenges. The competition will culminate with an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 29.

Aragon's Blaine Reynolds Named Athlete of the Week
Congrats to Aragon Cross Country's Blaine Reynolds - he was named the San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week for September 23.

The Daily Journal Athlete of the Week set the tone last Tuesday when he topped the field in the Peninsula Athletic League's opening meet PAL No. 1 at Half Moon Bay. The junior took first place with a time of 12 minutes, 5 seconds, out-touching Carlmont sophomore Aidan Dimick in a photo finish."

San Mateo High's Jeff Scheller Named 2019 Fall Sport Honor Coach
The Central Coast Section recently announced that Jeff Scheller, San Mateo High School Football Coach and Athletic Director, is a recipient of a 2019-2020 CCS Fall Sports Honor Coaches Award. Coaches are selected for the honor by their CCS colleagues.
Jeff has been the Varsity Head Football Coach at San Mateo High School since 2006. Coach Scheller has guided the Bearcats to two league titles during his 13 seasons.

Angst Movie Screening and Speaker Panel is This Thursday, October 10
The Angst project is an IndieFlix Original documentary designed to raise awareness around anxiety, with an emphasis on youth and families. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, experts, and parents. The goal is to help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and encourage them to reach out for help. The film and corresponding materials provide tools, resources, and hope.
A guided panel discussion will immediately follow the film.

The Districtwide College and Career Fair is Thursday, October 17
More than 100 colleges and organizations will be represented at the annual Districtwide College and Career Fair on Thursday, October 17.
The fair will be held at Burlingame High School from 6:30 - 8 p.m. and is open to all students and families in the San Mateo Union High School District.

Capuchino Fall Dance Show is October 23
Capuchino High School presents its Fall Dance Showcase featuring solos and duets on Wednesday, October 23. The show will take place in the CHS Main Auditorium and its starts at 7 p.m.

Aragon's Green Team held a Pop-Up thrift shop at the school as part of the Global Climate Strike Week.
Students donated like new or gently used clothes
two days before the event
, and then any student could go and "shop" for free. It was a great success -- an awesome way to keep fashion sustainable and allow students to get "new clothes."
