City Council Unanimously Approves Mayor's Housing-Focused Budget Message
On Tuesday, June 12, the City Council unanimously approved the Mayor's June Budget Message, putting the final touches on the Fiscal Year 2018-2019 budget.
With the City of San Jose facing a stable - yet constrained - fiscal outlook,
Mayor Liccardo's FY 2018-19 budget recommendations reflected a prudent and strategic approach that keeps the City on the path to restoring services, and to long-term fiscal sustainability. Among his recommended priorities,
Mayor Liccardo emphasized investments to confront our region's growing housing crisis, including:
- An additional $3 million to support the City's various homelessness initiatives.
- New investments in the City's rental rights program to expand available assistance for renters and create a Rental Registry to better monitor landlord compliance with the City's rent control laws.
- Funding for a pilot program that would help support the early development of unconventional, cost-effective housing concepts, like retrofitting dilapidated buildings to accommodate new affordable housing units.
The Mayor's Budget Message also called for additional resources to improve public safety,
expand funding to BeautifySJ - the Mayor's beautification initiative- and allocate $15.5 million into a rainy day reserve to help the City address future deficits and potential 'clouds' on the economic horizon.

The City of San Jose Announces Major Agreements with Verizon, AT&T & Mobilitie to Significantly Enhance Broadband Infrastructure in San Jose
On June 15, Mayor Liccardo announced the City's new lease agreements with Verizon, AT&T, and Mobilitie to install small cells on approximately 4,000 City-owned light poles - the largest small cell broadband infrastructure deployment of any U.S. city. This deployment will not only improve wireless service and lay the foundation for 5G technology in San Jose, but will also generate $24 million for the City's new Digital Inclusion Fund, which will support our efforts to connect the 95,000 San Joseans who still lack reliable internet access.

SJ Works Celebrates the Launch of its 4th Summer Helping Teens Land their First Job
