It's a Wrap!
Our I Am Wilmington: A Celebration of Cultural Diversity event was a success! Our students, staff, and Diversity Committee members did a fantastic job and the event was well attended. Everyone had a great time and got to know their community a little better.
We had a few special treats that night. Our WHS students performed, read, and drummed, and several of our WCS staff members sang. Our 2nd graders, led by Jamie Abel, were wonderful as they sang the International Hello Song. You can here WCS staff members Larita Harris-Jones, Elexis Wiederhold, Ciara McGee, Amber Hollins, and Digna Taveras perform here.
WCS is fortunate to have staff and students who have the talent and the willingness to share with the community. Thank you to everyone who helped, performed, supported, and attended our event.

WCS Professional Development
We're always learning at WCS, and that includes our staff members. On our recent Waiver Day we held professional development sessions for our staff.
Our teachers' sessions concentrated on learing about Trauma Informed Care.
"No one is immune to the impact of trauma. Trauma affects the individual, families, and communities by disrupting healthy development, adversely affecting relationships, and contributing to mental health issues including substance abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse. Everyone pays the price when a community produces multi-generations of people with untreated trauma by an increase in crime, loss of wages, and threat to the stability of the family." (Quoted from
www.traumainformedcareproject.org
)
Our bus drivers and paraprofessionals spent Waiver Day learing about Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and how it can be implemented on the bus and in the classroom. "PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities and students from underrepresented groups." (Quoted from www.pbis.org)
We recognize the important role we have in a child's life as we gain a better understanding of the impact of trauma - whether that trauma is abuse, neglect, poverty, housing and/or food instability, substance abuse, or an upset in their family structure. Behavior is communication, and through PBIS and Trauma Informed Care professional development, we are learning more ways to interpret behavior and improve communication with our students, so that we can help them to achieve success.
We tell our students to always keep learning and improving. As a District, we are committed to doing the same.

Start With Hello at WMS
The last week of September WMS students focused on the Sandy Hook Start With Hello program. This is a national program to promote an awareness of social isolation and what students can do about it.
They ended the week with an assembly from the Sandy Hook Promise organization, which was started after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. The Start With Hello program helps teach students to notice others when they appear to be alone or isolated from everyone. Then it empowers them to reach out and help, and it all starts with hello.

Bus Safety Week
National School Bus Safety Week is October 22-26, 2018.
Our bus drivers are
teaching students about school bus safety and expectations. Students are learning about:
- DPOS - Designated Place of Safety
- Danger Zone
- How to Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Responsible when loading/unloading and riding the bus
As a community that shares the road with school buses and students that walk/ride a bike to school, we can all do our part to help keep kids safe.
- Be alert when driving through neighborhoods near schools and watch for students walking or riding bikes to/from school.
- Watch for and stop when you see a crossing guard in an intersection or at a school crossing area.
- Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and a school bus when driving and stopping. Leaving plenty of distance allows students to get on/off the bus without getting in the Danger Zone.
- Learn more about DPOS, the Danger Zone, and safety tips for students and parents by visiting our Transportation page on the District website..
- And please, DO NOT try to rush past a bus when their lights are flashing for a drop-off or pick-up.
For additional information on sharing the road with school buses please visit the
National Safety Council - Tips for Drivers.

'Cane Community Moment
Each day at WCS is filled with teaching moments and this one was particularly touching.
One first grade girl asked these teachers, "Are you two sisters?" They looked at each other. Mrs. Nelson smiled and Mrs. Corbin said, "Why, yes. Yes we are." The girl smiled and said, "I can tell!" We love that our young students see the person inside. These two teachers are identical in kindness and love for all of their students.
Mrs. Nelson has taught at WCS for 19 years and is a 1st grade teacher. Mrs. Corbin has taught at WCS for 10 years and is a 2nd grade teacher.

Celebrating our Students
We've collected some recent articles highlighting recent student and staff accomplishments. We hope you'll take a minute and read up on our awesome WCS students. We think you'll be just as proud of them as we are.
