Meet our new Neighbors... Revolutionary Neighbors, that is!

A new school year brings new Revolutionary Neighbors! Five 18th century New Jerseyans join our collection of short biographies revealing how people from all walks of life and regions within the state dealt with struggles over personal responsibility, community and public service during the years of the American Revolution. Their stories help us understand the complex nature of a conflict that was both a war for independence and a civil war that was a daily part of life over the course of eight years.

Get acquainted with our new neighbors:  Ephraim Anderson Dr. Nicholas de BellevilleDavid Brearley
Luke Miller and  Helen Kortright Brasher. They join a roster of more than 60 New Jerseyans whose lives were forever changed by the war, whether they were Patriots, Loyalists or chose to remain neutral. Our Revolutionary Neighbors web page features their stories along with ideas that teachers and homeschoolers can use to bring these dynamic biographies to life for students.

Leaf peeping... harvest events... ghost walks: they're all part of the fun in Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area this month! Working with our Heritage Partners, we've put together a selection of events across New Jersey this fall, available on our website. For example:

Was that a ghost you saw? Have a frightfully good time at the Haunted Seaport in Tuckerton, take a Haunted Hayride at Allaire Village, discover the ghosts at Ford Mansion, bump into a spirit or two on a candlelit ghost tour of Liberty Hall. Hear the story of the Headless Horseman in Woodbridge, walk Greenwich's spirited Ye Greate Street with a ghostly guide, and more.

Enjoy the sights and harvest bounty of food festivals and farm fun! History, crafts and tasty treats combine at Bordentown's Cranberry Festival, while country living  in the Pinelands comes to life at Batsto Village. Paint pumpkins at Fleming Castle, discover the link between herbalists and witchcraft allegations at Peachfield,  and learn about farm-to-table at the Frazee House Harvest Homecoming.

We're adding more fun all the time, so visit our website  often for special events, historic site open houses and more.

250th session informs, draws new ideas

Sidewalk reenactments of life in Revolutionary New Jersey, bus tours highlighting Crossroads storylines, large-scale battle reenactments and using technology to tell our Revolutionary story were among concepts raised by representatives of historic sites and organizations from across the state who met on September 20 to share ideas on how to capitalize on the 250th anniversary of the United States to promote New Jersey's Revolutionary heritage. This was the latest in a series of meetings conducted over the past year to prepare for the 250th.

New Jersey Historical Commission Executive Director Sara Cureton and Crossroads Executive Director Janice Selinger kicked off the meeting with an update on national planning efforts and progress on supporting Crossroads activities. Lindsey Morrison, State and Local Relations Manager for the American Battlefield Trust, also outlined her organization's role as the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission's non-profit partner. Cureton noted that, in accordance with legislation passed this summer, the Historical Commission will be selecting the state's non-profit planning partner this fall.
