Business News From The City of Frederick, Maryland

Hello
What do proteomics, nano-therapeutics, genomics, virology, biodefense, cancer research, bioinformatics and beer brewing all have in common? The answer is
Frederick, Maryland. Frederick has emerged as a national leader in biotech research, development, and manufacturing and today is home to many of the top federal and commercial life science organizations in the world including the
Frederick National Lab for Cancer Research, the
National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research (NICBR), and the
US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) at Fort Detrick, as well as AstraZeneca, Lonza, and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Since its founding nearly 275 years ago, Frederick has repeatedly made history in business, science, arts, and politics. Today, Frederick is a place where the
culture
of innovation and technology meets the
culture of food, music, craft beer and baseball. A place where scientists, engineers, chefs, and brew masters hit home runs for the betterment of our community and world.
I continue to be amazed by the incredible intellectual athleticism and entrepreneurial spirit of Frederick’s MVP’s – our own citizen scientists. When entrepreneurial talent is paired up with coaching and unique business development assistance from the
Frederick Innovative Technology Center Inc (FITCI),
Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO),
Maryland Department of Commerce, and local economic development organizations, the result is tremendous in terms of economic impact, job creation, commercial leasing, and a vibrant community. This is in part why Frederick, with its 80 or so biotech companies, has emerged as a major league player on the Maryland life sciences team – a national leader in Runs Batted In (RBI’s) for public health.
There is no doubt that Frederick continues to blend history and technology to change lives. Recently many of our local team joined 18,000 others from Maryland and around the world at the BIO2018 industry conference for the
Guinness Book of World Records - Largest Business Partnering Event. This issue of Business ENews focuses on the Frederick biotech industry.
Enjoy Your Summer,
Best regards,
