Autism Risk May Be Reflected in Pregnant Mom's Metabolic Profile
[Source: Psych Central.com]

A new paper published in the journal Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders reveals that an unborn child's risk for autism may be associated with certain measurable metabolic processes in the pregnant mother.
The risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the general population is approximately 1.7 percent. However, if a woman has previously had a child with ASD, the risk of having a second child with ASD is increased more than tenfold - approximately 18.7 percent. Currently, there is no test for pregnant women which can predict the

Second-Grader Uses Letters To Educate Peers On Down Syndrome
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Joey Towell entered second grade at Richfield Elementary School prepared.
A week before school started, he and his mom, Jen Towell, gave his teachers a letter to distribute to all his classmates so they could get to know him a little better. And on the first day of school, he passed out résumés to teachers, aides, custodians, cafeteria workers and his bus driver.

Influx Of Students Likely To Exacerbate Special Ed Teacher Shortage
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

Thousands of additional children will soon be eligible for special education services after state officials eliminated an illegal cap that artificially tamped down Texas special education rolls for a decade.
But even if the state fully funds the estimated $3 billion cost of providing that extra instruction, educators say one big question remains: Where will schools find up to 9,000 new special education teachers?

Motor Learning for Precise Motor Execution
[Source:  Science Daily]

It is generally accepted that precise motor control in our daily life depends on acquisition of an internal model. One motor learning for an internal model is necessary for execution of precise movements in our daily life. There are two hypothetical internal models for motor learning: where to move (i.e. calculation of destination for a given motor command) or how to move (i.e. calculation of motor command for a target). There has been long-standing controversy over "which internal model is actually working in our brain?," for more than 30 years.

Could Poor Protein Trafficking be a Factor in Autism
[Source:  Medical News Today]

Newly published research - led by Rockefeller University in New York City, NY - reveals that the protein astrotactin 2 (ASTN2) can traffick receptors away from neurons' surfaces and prevent them from accumulating there.

Connections between neurons are essential to brain function.
They work because receptors, which sit on the surfaces of cells, are always ready to partner with incoming neurotransmitters from other cells.

Using Trinkets and Water Beads to Target Articulation
[Source: Speech Universe]

I bought a large bag of 200 trinkets from Dinky Doodads on Etsy last year, but never really organized them like I wanted to.  I just couldn't make the decision of what to do with them.  Well, the inspiration came to me last week.  I was talking to an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at my school and she showed me a bag that she had filled with water beads and rubber fish that she was using for an aquatic animals unit.  It was so fun to squish around to find all of the fish.  This made me think of all of those little trinkets that I

SPD Corner: Sensory Processing: Assessment & Intervention Strategies
[Source: Best Practice Autism]

Unusual sensory responses (i.e., sensory over-responsivity, sensory under-responsivity, and sensory seeking) are relatively common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sensory issues are now included in the DSM-5 ASD symptom criteria for restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities (RRB), and include hyper-or hypo-reactivity to sensory input or unusual interest in sensory aspects of the environment; such as apparent indifference to pain/heat/cold, adverse response to specific sounds or textures, excessive smelling or touching of objects (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). When present, these problems can interfere with adaptability in many areas of life (communication, daily living, socialization, occupational).

Autism Corner:  Reading Comprehension and Autism
[Source: Upbility]

According to scientific research, children acquire decoding and reading comprehension skills at the same time, but each skill develops independently of the other. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) usually develop decoding skills, but have difficulty with reading comprehension.    They can identify words relatively more easily than understanding what they have read. This may be attributed to the fact that comprehension is a more abstract skill than decoding.

PTC Corner: How to Teach Schedule Use
[Source: The Autism Helper]

Creating student schedules are a lot of work. You need to create a schedule, select the right type of schedule for each student, make the schedules, laminate, velcro, etc.  Once you schedules are prepped and ready to go, the real work begins. Schedules do not teach themselves. They are a tool. People need to be taught to use a tool. Just like you wouldn't hand a student a book and say, "read" - we cannot hand our kids a schedule and expect them to follow it with no instruction.

OT Corner: Why Is Body Awareness Important?
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

Body awareness is the ability to recognize where your body is in space. Your muscles and joints send your brain information about your body and how it moves.  You may wonder why is body awareness important?

Body awareness helps us to understand how to relate to objects and people at home, at school and outdoors. For example, proper body awareness tells us how far to reach for

SLP Corner: 9 Behavior Strategies for SLPs
[Source: Speech Room News]

Behavior needs can impact speech therapy in a lot of ways. I've written about it before here on the blog but I thought it was worth revising this month. Students can be resistant to working with us for so many different reasons. Are they hungry? Did they get enough sleep? Is this activity hard for them? Are you asking them to leave a preferred activity? Do they have a short attention span? A negative previous experience in that space? Are they just having an "off" day? There are so many contributing factors to behavior! If you're new to working with students, it can feel like you're grasping at straws.
