One of our most passionate ministries is our partnership with Kar Woo and Artists Helping the Homeless. Woo is one of the most influential voices of compassion in the Kansas City area. A few weeks ago, Woo asked me to come to a recovery meeting at a couple of his shelters for men in this metro area and in Lawrence. Dozens of guys in a room, talking, eating, but when Woo walks in, everyone straightens up a little.
When Woo asks you to do something, you do it. He has a spiritual power that way. When Woo calls asking for help with someone, I make it happen because I know the difference he makes.
Woo called me last week wondering that with the weather getting colder, if he could use our Social Hall on Sunday evenings for a Recovery meeting.
When Woo asks you to do something, you do it. Last Sunday, dozens of men in recovery came together for a meal and to continue the steps of their recovery.

We will get back to serving meals on the Plaza in the months ahead, too - something we had to put on hiatus...because of COVID.
Mary Penrose launched a new ministry that our Board of Outreach is funding to provide meals to people in need with Artist Helping the Homeless. This spring, when all the social services that support the poor and marginalized in Kansas City were shut down, we helped direct thousands of dollars to get rooms in a hotel so that people didn’t die on the streets.
This is what we do as Colonial Church. We change lives. We need your support to continue that. This last week you may have received a letter asking for your pledge of support for the coming year. You can return that card or make your pledge by clicking below.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6
The council has scheduled a congregational meeting for 9:15 a.m. between services on Sunday, December 6. Two items are on the agenda:
- Approve the funding of $15,000 from the Pemberton Trust funds to complete work on repairing the water damage in the lower level.
- Increase the budget limit for expenditures requiring congregational approval from $10,000 to $20,000 to accommodate the rising maintenance costs of an aging building and increasing rates of skilled trades such as plumbers. An increasing number of issues are arising with our physical plant requiring outside contractors to repair.

The devotion is due two weeks before the day you choose. Submit your devotion to Julie at julie.luttman@colonialucc.org

In past few years we have been able to share Colonial's Thanksgiving meal with families from the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City who are refugees from Turkey. We have reunited with friends and made new ones as we shared time together. This year we can turn to technology to help us celebrate with some who are new to this special western world holiday.

Once again, Colonial will be collecting new toys for Operation Breakthrough’s holiday store. The gift giving will be a little different this year due to COVID. Instead of a tree in the narthex to select ornaments from, go to the Operation Breakthrough Gift Registry to choose toys to purchase.
Place the unwrapped toys in the box outside the church entrance by the office door before 4:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday. We need the gifts by November 30. Gift cards should be mailed to Colonial Church, 7039 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS 66208.
If you need help getting the toys or gift cards to the church, contact Cindy Burgdorfer at 630-776-0511 or cburg1954@gmail.com.

Colonial Women Rummage Fundraiser
Because of concerns about COVID-19, Colonial Women is hosting a rummage collection rather than the usual sale. The goal is to raise $1,000, which means about 5,000 pounds of items! Savers will pay us by the pound for good quality items.
Goal – To reach the goal we need about 2,500 pounds of soft goods and 2,500 pounds of hard goods (although soft goods are preferred). To reach that requires:
- 250 13-gallon white trash bags of soft goods
- 200 boxes of hard goods
Amount that has been reported collected by members to date:
- 21 bags of soft goods
- 5 boxes of hard goods
- 6 boxes of books
Let Marylee Battaglia know how many bags or boxes you have collected so we can see progress toward the goal.
Collection – April 11, 2021
Bring your items on Sunday, April 11 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Everything will be loaded directly into a truck and taken to Savers the following day. Start collecting your items now so we have plenty of pounds to deliver to Savers in April. Nothing will be stored at the church.

Illustrating Equality vs. Equity
|
|
The terms "equality" and "equity" have been used in public policy and special interest groups to describe access to resources. The terms, however, are not interchangeable. Let's explore the differences.
Equality is about giving everyone the same resources while equity takes into consideration the differences of individuals and the resources one needs to be successful. Equity is about fairness in a sense of leveling out the playing field so those with a disadvantage have the same opportunities to be successful.
The League of Women Voters continues to prioritize Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy in every aspect of the League, being mindful of the advantages and disadvantages one faces to ensure every person has an equal opportunity to succeed.
