The OLMA Overview -- September 28, 2018
It was great seeing so many parents at Back-to-School Night! Our students are fortunate to have parents who are both involved in and supportive of their education. As educators, we feel equally fortunate as we work together to give our students the education, skills and character they need to succeed in college -- and in life.

Last year, we debuted a new addition to experiential learning at OLMA. It's called our Mini-Mester program and, in year one, it far exceeded our expectations. For that we have your daughters' teachers to thank. Each course was crafted by an OLMA educator and is a reflection of something they are passionate about and want to share.

This year's lineup of courses is amazing. It offers something for everyone, from international travel to hands-on research, to putting our hearts and mind to work in service to others. Over the next week or so, I ask all OLMA parents/guardians to spend some time reviewing the course options with your daughters. Below is a link to the list of courses and registration deadlines. Many have size limitations, so please get your forms and deposits in on time. While I don't want to rush the year, I can't wait to see our girls bring these courses to life.

Next Thursday, we will celebrate our Opening Mass of the school year. The celebration will include a special ceremony held annually to officially welcome all freshmen and transfer students into the OLMA Sisterhood. Parents and families are welcome to join us. Mass begins in the OLMA Chapel at 8:30 AM.

Mother Nature promises to deliver a spectacular fall weekend. Let's all get outside and enjoy it! See you soon. -- Mrs. Coyle

Student Spotlight
Taryn Headley, Class of 2019
OLMA senior, Taryn Headley is just back from a college visit to Sacred Heart University. She's also checking out Villanova University and working hard on perfecting her essay for the common application. While she's not sure which of the two schools she likes best quite yet, she does know that she wants to study nursing and work in an emergency room or trauma center.

"During my sophomore summer, my dad and step dad both spent time in the hospital," said Taryn. "When visiting them, I found myself in awe of the nurses who cared for them. They were moving in all directions at once, working on adreneline and doing a great job. I loved watching them and it felt right to me." The following year, Taryn accompanied Ms. Coppinger and a group of her classmates to the Cooper Trauma Center. "The pace was fast and the nurses were forced to think on their feet. I loved it and knew that a career in this field was what I wanted."

While Taryn says that she's looking forward to all of the fun events that come with senior year, she's most anxious to know where she will be attending college next year. She's says she is grateful for the help she's receiving from her teachers and guidance counselors at OLMA. "Preparing for and applying to colleges isn't easy," she said. I'm lucky that OLMA has so much to offer to help us through it. I've taken avantage of all of it, from the essay writing bootcamp, to college tours, mock interviews, and more."

Taryn is one determined young lady. "When I tell people that I want to be an ER nurse, some of them tell me that it's too hard and that I might not make it," she said. "I say, 'watch me' and work even harder to make sure I succeed."

During her time at OLMA, Taryn has played Volleyball and participated in the Interact, Bake and Student Ambassador clubs. Next month, she will be visiting her elementary school, Assumption Regional Catholic School, in Galloway. "I love going back and talking with the 7th and 8th grade girls about OLMA," she said. "It's a great place to go to high school and the support we receive is amazing. I also tell them how important it is to stay on top of their school work by learning to plan out their time wisely."

When she's not in school, Taryn loves to paint and do calligraphy. She also works at an Italian restaurant in Galloway. She was recently named Employee of the Month for the second time. We're sure it won't be the last. Have a great year, Taryn!

Our Very Own Mrs. Coia and Mrs. Stanzione Among Honorees on October 26, 2018
Among OLMA's biggest supporters are two individuals, one team and one couple chosen for induction into the 2018 OLMA Hall of Fame. Selected by the school’s Salerno Society, in recognition of their significant contributions to OLMA’s vision to change the world, one young woman at a time, this year’s honorees include: Lauren Hartman (Class of 2011), Nicole Covella (Class of 2009) and Caitlyn Covella (Class of 2013), the first three scholar athletes to score 100 goals for OLMA Lacrosse; Dawn Coia; long-time OLMA educator and alumnae parent; Honorable Georgia M. Curio (Class of 1974), the first female superior court judge appointed for Cumberland County; and Tony and Mary Jane Stanzione (Class of 1972). Mary Jane runs the food service operation at OLMA and she and Tony are alumnae parents, contributors and volunteers.

In their honor, OLMA will hold a Hall of Fame Induction Celebration dinner event on Friday, October 26, 2018 at The Greenview Inn in Vineland, NJ. All proceeds will go toward OLMA’s growing athletics program which currently offers 13 competitive supports.

The Salerno Society was created in 2012 and is named in honor of Sister Mary Dolores Salerno, D.M., OLMA’s first principal. It was through her efforts that OLMA introduced sports as an integral part of the school’s curriculum. “The mission of The Salerno Society is twofold,” said Society Chairperson, Bernadette Corwonski-Miller. “First, we want to honor Sister Dolores for her incredible commitment to OLMA as principal. In addition, we want to pay tribute to the many others who have contributed to the growth of our school as athletes, scholars, teachers, coaches, benefactors, and career professionals.”
