FY2019 Grants Support Artists, Organizations, and Schools

(from top) Brattrock, The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, Laurel Jenkins, and The Arts Bus were recipients of FY2019 grants.
We are pleased to announce grants to 88 Vermont organizations and artists in our first FY2019 grant round. Through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts - matched dollar for dollar by the Vermont State Legislature - the Council will distribute $474,488 to support creative endeavors across the state.

"The Council is committed to building a Vermont where art, culture, and creativity are at the heart of our communities," said Executive Director Karen Mittelman. "Through these grants, we help to bring arts experiences to children in Vermont's most rural schools, assist artists in developing their careers, and contribute to building Vermont's cultural infrastructure by making cultural facilities more accessible, open, and innovative."

Grants were awarded in the following categories:

Twelve grants to support activities that enhance the mastery of artists' craft or skills that increase their business viability.

Fourteen grants to fund artist residencies in schools intended to serve as a model for the integration of the arts across the PreK-12 curriculum (additional applications are under review and will be announced in October).

Twelve grants to support nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and schools in their efforts to add vibrancy to Vermont communities by providing equal and abundant access to the arts.

Ten grants to support the creation of new work by Vermont artists.

Thirteen grants to support Vermont nonprofit organizations and municipalities in projects to enhance, create, or expand the capacity of an existing building to provide cultural activities for the public.

The second year of   Arts Partnership funding was awarded to twenty-seven Vermont-based nonprofit arts organizations that offer year-round, high-quality arts programs and services.

Spotlight Gallery: 2019 Proposals Invited

The Spotlight Gallery, the Council's in-house exhibit space, just got a facelift! Clutter-free, bright white walls and an updated hanging system provide expanded space and improved viewing. Now we need to fill the space walls with art.

The Council is accepting proposals from Vermont-based artists for group shows in 2019. We are looking for exhibits that include three or more artists with a thematic connection. Interested? Send a brief proposal outlining your theme and providing links to the artists' work to Spotlight Gallery Proposal. No phone calls please.

Creative Communities Work

Public spaces become different with art. They are not only more beautiful; they are more expressive.

According to Leonardo Vazquez, who will deliver the plenary address at this year's Network Convening, creative placemaking brings a sense of belonging. It has a powerful effect on those who have felt left out. "Artists, famously," says Leo.

The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts , which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
