Kevin Powers
(Little Brown & Co., $26.00)

Spanning over a century, beginning prior to the Civil War, the lives of people both free and slave centered on a Virginia plantation are intertwined as they must deal with and suffer the consequences of the nation's defining conflict. Written with poetic prose the novel serves as an exposition and indictment of the violence that has shaped and is inherent to American culture. This is a powerful, provocative yet beautiful work that is sure to gather laurels come award season but is also, more importantly, one that will endure. A spectacular achievement. -- BC

Kevin Powers is the author of  The Yellow Birds, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Guardian First Book Award, and was a National Book Award Finalist, as well as  a collection of poetry called  Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting. He was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, and holds an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Michener Fellow in Poetry. He served in the US Army in 2004 and 2005 in Iraq, where he was deployed as a machine gunner in Mosul and Tal Afar.

In his too-crazy-not-to-be-true memoir, George Malvaney chronicles what easily should be several lifetimes of adventure-and misadventure. Growing up in a close-knit family in Jackson, Mississippi, the young Malvaney preferred woods and swamps to the drudgery of high school. He dropped out, enlisted in the Navy, and shortly afterwards joined the Ku Klux Klan. While onboard, he organized a branch of the Klan, corrupting and endangering his crewmen. After his discharge, he answered a mercenary call to take part in an invasion of Dominica, a Caribbean fiasco known as the "Bayou of Pigs." That madness landed him in a federal penitentiary. And there, somehow, he vowed to turn his life around.

Cups Up, a title drawn from the wake-up call shouted at prisoners, is a story of perseverance, cleansing, and redemption. It chronicles the roller coaster life of a high school dropout, ex-Klansman, ex-mercenary, ex-felon, and ex-con, who went on to become a college graduate, a hard-nosed environmental regulator, and a widely respected top executive in a company with more than a thousand employees.

A Proud Supporter
of Renewable Energy

As a  Green Power Switch program participant, in the month of March, approximately 20% of Square Books' electricity use came from renewable sources -- a combination solar, wind, or biomass. In my home, this figure was closer to 40%, and, if the amount of power from hydroelectric sources is included, it approaches 50%.

Renewable sources here presently cost more than other sources, and volunteering for this program adds a bit to one's utility bill. However, as the cost of renewable energy continues to decrease, then the amount of renewable energy one purchases, for the same amount of money, will increase.

In Oxford-Lafayette County, Green Power Switch is implemented through  Northeast Mississippi Power and Oxford Electric Department (662-232-2373).

Square Books is proud to support renewable energy -- at no extra cost to our customers -- and we thank you for your support of Square Books. - RH
