From the Desk of
Senator  Ed Harbison

As we began the month of September in reflection of 9/11 and the tragic events of that day, I also thought about how much our world has changed, particularly in regard to public safety. As keeping our citizens and country safe is the most important role of our government, public safety is taken seriously on both the federal and state level. Many efforts have been made in recent years through legislation passed within the Georgia General Assembly and signed into law as we work to ensure you and your loved ones are kept safe. In fact, public safety receives the third highest state budget allocation each fiscal year.

Over the last 17 years, public safety has been a primary debate under the gold dome, and the 2017-2018 legislative session was no exception. In addition to our standing committee discussions taking place over the 40-day session, we also have study committees assigned to further debate proposed measures, outside of our allotted time on Capitol Hill. Below, you will find bills passed over the last couple of years to strengthen safety on the state level.

As always, it is my honor to serve you and our great district! If you need anything at all, feel free to contact us at anytime. May God bless each and every one of you!

Senate Study Committee Update

As mentioned in my last update, General Assembly members are often appointed to serve on Study Committees during the off session season.

It is my honor to have been appointed to the  study committee regarding  Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Operations and Authority Creation. We have begun our hearings on discussion if the Atlanta airport is to be overseen by a state authority vs. the City of Atlanta, which currently oversees operation. We have had two hearings to date.

Since my last update, I have also been appointed to serve as Chairman of the Senate Study Committee on Creating a Lottery Game to Benefit Veterans. Veterans affairs is an area of which I am extremely passionate. I will update you on pertinent committee hearing news as we move forward.  You can learn more about this particular study committee by   clicking here.
It was a pleasure to attend the 2018 Congressional Black Caucus gathering in Washington D.C. this month. Conferences such as this, give us the opportunity to learn more in depth about issues concerning our communities, nation wide.

Thank you to my friend, colleague and Caucus Chairman, Senator Lester Jackson, for planning an informational and successful Georgia Legislative Black Caucus conference last month.
