Compassionate Community,
and Relationships

Here is an update of what is happening at
House of Prayer this week!
Worship This Sunday!
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

Sunday is Pentecost, a day we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit. While it is appropriate to remember the way the Spirit empowered the disciples to speak many languages to share the gospel, it is also important to be aware the of the Spirit working in our own lives. The Holy Spirit nudges us toward God's path. The Spirit intercedes for us when we do not know the way. The Holy Spirit knows what we need before we do. Join us Sunday as we celebrate, remember, and open our lives to the Spirit!
Confirmation This Sunday
On Sunday, May 20th, at the 9:30am worship service we'll celebrate as our youth affirm their baptismal promises and are confirmed. We invite you to pray for Caroline, Isabella, and Jake at this important new beginning in their lives that they would continue to feel the love of God and their whole faith community.
Children & Youth This Week
This week the Sunday school kids finish out the program year with Bible Bingo, reviewing all the different Bible stories we learned about this year. They also sing at the ReFuel service. Wednesday night youth group is done for the year but check out all our summer programs!

Kudos to Ben Whalen, Pastor Ben, and the Marketing & Communication Team for their work on the new HOP website!  You can continue to find it www.hoplc.org. Check out the updated content and great pictures!
Unity in the Community
Plan to attend this annual event at Veteran's Park on Thursday, May 24th at 5pm to celebrate all the different cultures in Richfield and meet some of our neighbors in the process. You'll want to come check it out! Several HOP folks volunteered last year and we hope that is YOU this year! If you would like to help in advance with craft preparation OR you're willing to help on with setup, serving food, or other tasks at the event please contact Paula Kiehl at [email protected].
Richfield City Council Talks Housing
Members of our community engagement team have partnered with many of our neighbors and city leaders to preserve affordable housing and protect the residents who need it. The City Council has a work session planned for 5:45pm on Monday, May 21st at city hall (67th and Portland). Beforehand, starting at 4:30, there will be a "Gather, Eat, Act" event sponsored by VEAP & CAP-HC where you can learn more about the proposed ordinances and how you can get involved. We hope you can come! Please contact Paula Kiehl ( [email protected]) or Ben Whalen ( [email protected] or 612-500-9523) for more information.
Helping Our Literal Neighbors
The housing nonprofit Aeon purchased the Season's Park Apartments just south of church this past year and are now working to address years of previously ignored maintenance needs. They'd like community help with some basic landscaping projects to clean up and beautify the complex so residents can be proud to call it home. Join us after church on Sunday, June 10th, from 12:30-3:00pm. No landscaping experience necessary and all ages can help out! Lunch will be provided for all volunteers, please sign up with Ben Whalen by June 3rd ( [email protected] or 612-500-9523).
Book Drive for RDLS
HOP member Maya Burkstrand, and Bridget Foley are working on their Girl Scout Silver Award. They hope to collect one Spanish and one English book for each student at RDLS. There is a collection bin in the narthex through mid-May for your donations. Spanish books are especially needed. They are available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other local book retailers. Of interest to this age group include these series:  Diaro de Greg, Diario de Nikki, Elefante y Cerdita and Escalafrios.
Community Gardeners Wanted
As the warm spring sunshine encourages new growth, we too are encouraged to "get back out there" and turn some soil in God's Creation.  The HOP community garden is always welcoming new ideas and helpers.  After several years as dedicated VEAP gardeners, Sandy Jenson and Kim Houle would like to pass the pitchforks to someone new who may have a future vision for what this urban garden can be.  If you are interested in managing or helping please contact Kim Houle at 612-558-0634.
Plant Sale
Richfield Garden Club is sponsoring a Plant Sale on Saturday, May 19, 9:00am - 3:00pm and Sunday, May 20, 10:00am - 3:00pm at the Richfield Historical Center, 6901 Lyndale Ave S.
Women's Summer Bible Study at Oak Grove
All women are invited to attend our summer Bible Study sponsored by Lydia-Ruth Circle of Oak Grove Lutheran Church (7045 Lyndale Ave S, Richfield). The Bible Study will be on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level of the church. Light refreshments will be served. No preparation is required. The Bible Study is published in the Gather magazine, a publication of the ELCA for women. Copies of the study will be available at each session.  This summer's study is written by Anna Madsen who will present a three-part study on prayer.  Anna is a freelance theologian and proud mama to daughter Else and son Karl. She works with OMG: Center for Theological Conversation (omgcenter.com) and enjoys seeing the occasional moose and bear in their woods.
