Gelardi Student Center: Pardon Our Progress

Construction is active on campus and our capital campaign is underway. The new Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center will underscore the institution’s focus on student success, including a new library, bookstore, campus café, large meeting space, student study spaces, lounge areas and more. From Newborn Patient to Student:
Cutter Newton Follows Mentor

Children watch and tend to mimic everything adults do, whether those adults are parents, family members, or even random strangers. Sherman College Dean of Clinical Sciences Armand Rossi, D.C., had no idea that the efficient care, family atmosphere, spinal checks and gentle adjustments he provided to a particular newborn under his care would later introduce a new idea in that child’s life.

Rossi would often see two or even three generations of patients in his practice under regular care. One such patient was one-day-old infant Cutter Newton of Marietta, GA. Rossi arrived just after his birth and delivered an adjustment that would be the start of Newton’s journey into the world of chiropractic. Read the full story on the blog.
VIPs, Employees Sign Beam
for Gelardi Student Center
 
Sherman College VIPs and employees recently had the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the college’s future when they were able to sign one of the final steel beams to be installed atop the new Gelardi Student Center. About 25 VIPs, including donors, trustees and Alumni Association leadership, signed the beam during a private tour as part of Lyceum 2018. Later, college employees were given the opportunity to do the same.
 
“Signing the beam with my team was an honor for me,” said Student Activities Coordinator Katie Burns. “We are very excited for the Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center that will house many student activities. Going through these growing pains has not always been easy, but knowing it is for a greater plan is worth it. I know the legacy we are leaving now will carry on for years to come.”
Lyceum 2018:
Constructing the Future
 
More than 700 chiropractors and students from across the U.S. and around the world attended Sherman College of Chiropractic May 3-5 as part of Lyceum, its annual continuing education and homecoming event. Lyceum is held in Spartanburg, SC, each spring and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs. Check out our event photo album on Facebook.

Sherman College Names
2018 Award Recipients
 
Sherman College honored alumni, chiropractors, and supporters during its 45th Lyceum, its homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds of chiropractors and students throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held in May in Spartanburg, SC, and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs; this year more than 700 were in attendance. The college is proud to announce the following 2018 award recipients :

Mission Statement Updated to Include Focus on Subluxation
 
The Sherman College Board of Trustees recently updated the college mission statement to reflect a focus on vertebral subluxation and a dedication to principled chiropractic, adding language that the college prepares students to become doctors of chiropractic who are “focused on the analysis and adjustment of vertebral subluxation.”
 
Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., praised the update. “In a marketplace where chiropractors and colleges are straying farther and farther from the profession’s true purpose, it is refreshing and it is extremely important that our focus remain on principled chiropracTIC,” Cordero explained. “This mission revision ensures that happens. Sherman College was founded on principle and will prosper on principle.” Read the college’s full mission statement.
Interns Join Chiropractic Health Center
 
Twenty-three interns are now ready to see patients at the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center, the teaching clinic for senior students in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program. Interns celebrated the entrance of the final phase of their chiropractic education on April 6 during a pinning ceremony on the Sherman College campus.
 
Because the clinic is open to the public, residents in Upstate South Carolina experience excellent chiropractic care at affordable prices through 35,000 patient visits per year. During the ceremony, interns recited the Pledge of Professionalism, and nametags were placed onto their blue clinic jackets.

ROARing Louder for Sherman College During Lyceum
 
The Annual Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Luncheon held during Lyceum was a success. More than 70 ROAR members and supporters were in attendance to hear from guest speakers talk about the impact this program has on the college and the profession. Attendees also received a training presentation led by Admission Event and Program Manager Emily Wood. Those unable to attend will have a chance to review the session via video soon.
 
The college is reshaping the ROAR program to ensure it is as effective as possible for building the future of the chiropractic profession. “The passion that we all have for sharing chiropractic and Sherman College with the world makes the ROAR program a powerful collective effort, and it also makes directing the program so much fun,” Wood explained. “Our ROAR members all possess the desire to foster and inspire the next generation of chiropractors, and that passion will continue to grow and shape the profession.”
 
Wood said the ROAR relaunch is designed to better serve members. She is asking that everyone, including current ROAR members, update their information on this form. The deadline for ROAR registration is July 1, 2018. We can’t wait to hear you ROAR LOUDER!

Sherman Represented at Upstate Research Symposium
 
Sherman College Director of Research Pengju George Luo, M.D., Ph.D., along with faculty members Lynne Koch, D.C., ’95, Terry Lancaster, M.A., Deborah Sanderson, D.C., and Claudia Seay, D.C., ’80, attended the 14th Annual South Carolina Upstate Research Symposium on April 13.
 
Sherman faculty engaged in different sessions of symposium activities including presentations and workshops.

Luo served as a member of the Symposium Program Committee, as a reviewer for several symposium submissions, and as a judge of poster presentations for the Student Award Competition.
College Community Raises $400+ for Safe Homes Rape Crisis Coalition
 
Many Sherman students, faculty and staff enjoyed a mid-week break from the dress code and wore jeans to campus on April 25 for a good cause. For a minimum $3 donation to SAFE Homes/Rape Crisis Coalition ( SHRCC) in Spartanburg, many participated in Denim Day, an annual awareness event and fundraiser.
 
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and SHRCC promotes Denim Day as part of a large-scale effort to raise awareness and encourage prevention of sexual violence. Sherman College participated in the campaign for its fourth year in a row, raising more this year than in any year prior. The total collected for the 2018 event was $414.75. All proceeds go to SHRCC for its work with survivors.
Sherman College Sponsors Criterium, Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion
 
Sherman College of Chiropractic served as sponsor to two major cycling events in April and May. First, the college was a sponsor posted along the home stretch of the 14th Annual Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Criterium, a closed-circuit, multi-lap cycling race through Downtown Spartanburg. The Criterium turns the heart of the city into an extravagant tailgating party to watch cyclists race around the half-mile downtown course. This race is a part of the USA CRITS Speed Week series and is known for its open-air plaza center, dangerously sharp left turns and unique atmosphere.
 
The Sherman College of Chiropractic Health Center served as Cyclist Care + Support Sponsor for the 2018 Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion. Interns provided spinal health screenings at the event expo the day before the race. The Assaults is one of the most intense, premier cycling experiences that draws a full field of nearly 1,000 cyclists from across the world each year. The Assault on Mt. Mitchell is a one-day, 102.7 mile challenge that takes riders from Spartanburg, SC, to the top of the highest peak in the east, Mt. Mitchell; its sister ride, The Assault on Marion, stretches 74.2 miles from Spartanburg to Marion, NC.
College Welcomes New Student Ambassador Officers

Three new officers were elected for the Student Ambassador program in March 2018. Secretary Nicole Mercado, President Charles Tucker, and Vice President Angelica Lopez (pictured above from left to right) have begun their one-year terms and will be working to further strengthen the Ambassador program.
 
Student Ambassadors are responsible for giving campus tours to prospective students, as well as aiding in Showcase Sherman Weekends to promote the message that Sherman College has to offer and show why Sherman is the premier college for a chiropractic education.
 
Group meetings are held monthly to discuss program business, and quarterly dinners provide the opportunity to train and to strengthen relationships. The program has now accepted 12 new members inducted during the spring and summer quarters. New members, pictured above in white, include Cynthia Baker, Taylor Bowker, Craig Bryan, Ali Fitzgerald, Terence Hoff, Carlos Medina, Lindsey Merritt, Victoria Pait, Charmi Patel, Teena Rowe, Jeimmy Sanchez Guzman and Tyler Speed.
Students, Faculty Serve as Buddies, Coaches for Carolina Miracle League
 
Sherman students and faculty members have continued their strong involvement with Carolina Miracle League this spring. The college sponsors a team and has quite a few students and faculty serving as buddies and coaches in the league, which embraces the belief that “every child deserves a chance to play baseball.”

Showcase Sherman Weekend Welcomes Prospective Students, Guests

Sherman College is hosting its Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg. Due to construction on campus, prospective students and their guests are invited to stay at the new hotel to further enjoy and explore Spartanburg each day after sessions end. Attendees have an opportunity to visit the Sherman College campus for a tour and a palpation session, and they also enjoy a trip to downtown Greenville’s Falls Park. Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Our next Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 are scheduled for August 3-4, and November 2-3, and they will be held off campus at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg during the campus expansion. August registration is open, but space is limited. Spread the word and send the next generation of chiropractors to visit during this exciting time in Sherman College’s history.

Sigmon Publish Research

Health Center Case Doctor and Chair of Clinical Curriculum Matthew Hudson, D.C., ’06, alumna Paige Sigmon, D.C., ’16, and Joel Alcantara, D.C., have published a case study in the Journal of Upper Cervical Research. “Reduction of Seizures & Self Aggression Following Chiropractic Care to Reduce Upper Cervical Subluxation in a 3-Year-Old Male: A Case Study and Review of the Literature,” was published in the April 5, 2018, issue.
 
The case study describes the health outcomes in a 3-year-old suffering from epileptic seizures and self-aggression following chiropractic care to reduce upper cervical vertebral subluxation. The case report provides supporting evidence on the effectiveness of chiropractic care in abating the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures in infants. Read the abstract.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month

The Chiropractic Health Center faculty recognize an intern each month who excels in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The April 2018 Intern of the Month is Paige Dines, a thirteenth quarter student from Lakeview, MI. She graduates this September and plans to work as an associate in Michigan. Prior to graduation, she will be completing the college’s Practice Management Observational Elective (PMOE) in Lakeview with Gary and Cathie Padden, D.C.s, ’83 and ’85; Andy and Tiffany Padden, D.C.s, ’14 and ’13; and Jeanette Chomic, D.C., ’12.
