Dear Colleagues:
This past weekend was the first of four interview sessions for the DDS Class of 2024. These are some of my favorite autumn events because I get to "take a peek" at who will make up the next generation of leaders in our profession. More than 250 highly-qualified candidates from all over Ohio and across the country have been invited for one of these interview sessions.
At these events I welcome the groups of aspiring dental students to The Ohio State University and our College of Dentistry. I also share information about our college community, and I tell the candidates why I think there has never been a better time to join the dental profession. I get another chance to speak with many of them during lunch. These are opportunities for me to learn about where they are from; the other schools where they have or will interview; and the reasons why they have selected a career in dentistry.
Although I do not get into comparisons of one health profession over another, many of the candidates say they had originally thought about medicine before they chose dentistry. They tell me that they changed their minds after shadowing a few physicians because there seemed to be a lack of patient interaction. The appointments were brief and the conversations were short. Patients were in and out quickly, receiving a minimum of personalized attention.
Then t
hey tell me how different their experience was when they shadowed dentists. They say, "Dentists take time to get to know their patients. They build relationships with their patients so they can understand their needs and care for them as individuals. And that's what I want."
How pleased I am to learn that the doctor-patient relationship is a key motivator for students to consider the dental profession as their future career. Knowing that they desire and value this kind of relationship tells me we are attracting people to dentistry who will help maintain the integrity of our profession by keeping patients as our first priority.
