FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
LC has a pretty upbeat message this week!

So many great things are happening here – our construction is humming along and our kids have done really well with the reroutings and new pathways through the building, our first mid-quarter grading period has wound to a close and we are well organized to respond to those Tigers who need assistance, we are getting our first-of-the-year celebration of achievement put together for our Honor Roll students, and our Homecoming dance and celebration is just around the corner. So much good news!
But last night, I got a call from a friend in Issaquah who is a teacher at a high school there, and she asked me to make sure to share with our community the tragedy that is happening in theirs.

In the past two weeks, two amazing sixteen-year-old boys at Skyline High School have died from fentanyl overdoses. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/crime/sammamish-officials-heartbroken-over-deaths-of-2-skyline-high-school-students-who-overdosed-on-fentany

Skyline is a school a lot like this one.

It’s big and bursting at the seams with great kids, many of whom are kids of financial means and familial privilege.

They are busy, involved and active students who do all the things all the time; lots of incredible achievements in athletics and academics routinely come out of Skyline High.
But we know that with a climate of high achievement and high rigor, sometimes kids get crackly.

They start to feel worn down, insufficient, not “in the hunt”, not truly known.
And when that happens, they can forget that there are families and school teachers and counselors and coaches, etc., all just waiting to confirm to them that they are enough… right now… fully, totally, gloriously just right.

(And, I think, too that our culture too often communicates that pain – discomfort, insecurity, difficulty – is unacceptable and not to be tolerated, let alone studied and considered. We might be better served helping kids understand that pain isn’t unacceptable; it’s unavoidable. Natural. Often instructive. Inducing of reflection and growth. Sometimes they just have to sit in the hurt for a bit to understand what’s causing it; they then can bring it into the hands of an ally and say, here… help me with this…)

We all can see, though, that when kids begin believing that better living can be achieved through chemistry, tragedies like Skyline’s can occur.

Please connect with your kids about what is happening in communities like ours and let them know that it has never been more important to ensure that they and their friends are safe and smart and completely, totally, one-hundred percent committed to never taking any medications not prescribed directly to them.

We have a lot to learn about the crisis facing our kids. Stay tuned – we’ll try to keep you informed.

Your duties would include being at the school every second Thursday of the month from 1:00 until 3:00. You will help unload boxes of fresh produce from a box truck, load then on to rolling carts and bring them in to our main building. We then re-bag the items into smaller portions and place them on tables to be given to the students after school. It’s a great way to connect with our students, help them access fresh produce and meet other LC parents. Please contact counselor Kathy Blancher at kathyb@spokaneschools.org or 354-6893 if you can spare some time. Thank you.
AP Test Registration Ends October 31: The College Board has moved AP Registration to the fall so students will now commit to taking the exams in the fall instead of the spring . Each AP Exam costs $94.00 .
  • If your student qualifies for Free/Reduced lunch, the State of Washington will pay 100% of testing fees.
  • We have a small budget set aside to help offset costs for families that do not qualify for Free/Reduced lunch but may still need a little help.
  • LC must submit our AP order by early November, so payments will need to be made prior to the order. If your family has extenuating circumstances preventing you from paying by the deadline, we will work together to find a solution that ensures your child can take the exams.
  • If a student registers for an exam in the fall and decides not to take the test in May there is a mandated $40 cancellation fee. Additionally, if a student decides to register after the fall registration due date, a $40 late fee will be assessed. These prices are set by College Board and are not negotiable.

Required Steps: The registration and payment process is October 1- 31 . For students choosing to take the exams, they must commit to their exams in their College Board account AND complete the registration paperwork for payment at LC. Payments can be made to the Business Office or online through our District payment system. Students were provided information and paperwork in all of their AP classes to explain the process.
