Planning
Kyle Pimental, principal regional planner, partnered with the NH Department of Environmental Services to host a drinking water supply workshop on Monday, Sept. 24. The workshop provided training for local planners and municipal officials on the benefits of conserving or protecting high-priority water supply lands and presented information on resources available to protect them.

The workshop included an introduction and overview to source water protection, a presentation by Somersworth city planner Shanna Saunders on integrating conservation into municipal planning, new research into community conservation priorities presented by UNH staffers, case studies from Rochester and the Salmon Falls River watershed, and a source protection resources roundtable.

Transportation

Rachel Dewey, data analyst, and Marcia Moreno-Báez, GIS planner/analyst, will be attending a TransCAD training beginning next Monday, Oct. 1. This five-day course, which takes places in Newton, MA, is designed to train users on modeling software that can be used to analyze travel demand, air quality conformity, and project development.

The course will prepare Strafford MPO staffers to demonstrate air quality conformity in time for the next Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP is a regional document that outlines schedules and funding for transportation projects over the course of four years. The upcoming update will cover the years 2019-2022. Staffers will also use the information from the training to model scenarios for other transportation planning projects.

Economic Development
Over the course of the week, four SRPC staffers attended public involvement sessions held as part of the state's initiative to create an economic development plan.

James Burdin, Kyle Pimental, Nancy O’Connor, and Executive Director Jen Czysz each participated in one or two sessions. By the end of the week, SRPC staffers had attended all but three workshops held by the New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs (NHDBEA) Division of Economic Development.

Kyle attended the creative economy session. Jen attended three sessions, the talent, housing, and regional planning commission sessions. James attended the rural economy and infrastructure sessions, and Nancy attended the K–16 and industry alignment and the entrepreneurship and small business sessions. Sessions were held in Berlin, Nashua, Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth.

Prior to each session, attendees were given a working paper that included a series of questions to be considered in small groups during the workshop. The NHDBEA Division of Economic Development will use the public input from the workshops to develop an economic development plan that reflects the needs of stakeholders throughout the state.
