SMA Prep News
Middle School Campus
Here's what is happening at the Prep:
Dear Families,

This was an incredible week of activities that connected our parents, teachers, and students together in support of our learning community.  Thank you to our PTCC and all of our parent volunteers who helped to make our Fall Book Fair a success! We also greatly appreciate everyone’s support in purchasing books during this event.  Thanks to your generosity, our PTCC is able to provide donations for teachers to purchase books for their classrooms.
This week, Dr. Tracy Fanara visited with our 6th grade cadets to share her expertise about environmental health and red tide. This was an incredible opportunity for our cadets to ask a local scientist questions about a current event affecting our community. Many thanks to SMA-MAJ Carol Pelletier and SMA-CPT Jennifer Neff for their dedication in coordinating this special program!

I also want to give SMA-MAJ Deb Walker a shout out for her tireless work in preparing this year’s garden along with many other agriscience activities.  Thanks to Deb and the University of Florida extension service in providing supplies and expertise from master gardeners, Carol Holmes and Martina Venz, the SMA Prep garden is off to a great start!

We have an important opportunity for our SMA community to come together in support of the Hurricane Florence victims . PLEASE take a moment to read about how you can donate in support of this important cause.

We have several other activities next week for families to get involved. Our blood drive is Thursday and Formation Days is on Wed. and Thur. for parents of 7th and 8th grade cadets. We hope you will join us in the morning to see our cadets in action during formation.  See below for more details.

As always, thank you for being a part of our community!

~ MAJ Becky Morris, Asst. Head of School
Dr. Fanara's Visit

Dr. Tracy Fanara  from  Mote Marine Laboratory was back on the Prep campus Tuesday to engage our 6th grade cadets in discussions about environmental health and address the many questions our cadets had about the red tide outbreak. We greatly appreciate Dr. Fanara returning each year and being a part of our learning community!

Learning in Action: Planting this year's garden
SMA-MAJ Walker's Agriscience Program
Master Gardeners, Carol Holmes and Martina Venz, along with Martina's husband John, through the University of Florida extension services, provided their support, skills, and knowledge to help SMA-MAJ Walker's agriscience teams launch this year's SMA Prep garden.

Planted on Tuesday were mini carrots, Black Spanish radishes, White Icicle radishes, arugula, kale, corn, beans lettuce, watermelon, bok choy, and many herbs. What a collection! Cadets will document growth until harvest time and submit a final report to the extension service.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Did You Know?

A student is chronically absent if he or she
misses as few as two days of school a month.
2 DAYS PER MONTH x 9 MONTHS = CHRONIC ABSENCE

Here are some ways to help eliminate chronic absenteeism:

Parents and Families can:

  • Make getting to school on time everyday a high priority for your family.
  • Talk with your child about the importance of school attendance from an early age and the negative effects of too many absences.
  • Have a back-up plan for getting your child to school when there are difficulties with transportation, family illness, or other challenges.
  • Schedule doctor and other appointments for before or after school hours whenever possible.
  • Contact your child’s school counselor to discuss supports that can help your child maintain regular school attendance.
