Mandi Sehgal, M.D., Featured on NPR's "Up to Date"

On Wednesday, September 17,  Mandi Sehgal, M.D., associate professor of Geriatrics, was interviewed on NPR's live public affairs program, "Up to Date." Program host Steve Kraske and Dr. Sehgal discussed geriatrics: the need for geriatricians, their training, skills, and how to find a geriatrician. Researcher Highlight: Kathleen Guthrie, Ph.D.

This month, FAU's College of Medicine interviewed Kathleen Guthrie, Ph.D., associate professor of Biomedical Science.

Dr. Guthrie's passion for science developed in high school. "I've always loved science, and had a couple of fantastic high school science teachers. This interest in science led to the pursuit of a B.S. in Biology and another B.S. in Chemistry, as well as a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Guthrie's recent work has focused on adult neurogenesis. She is the Principal Investigator on a new R21 grant titled, the "Role of UBe3a in Neuronal Maturation and Synaptogenesis in Adult-born Neurons," sponsored by The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dade County Street Response Disaster Relief Team Seeks Donations

Dade County Street Response Disaster Relief Team is seeking medical supplies to support patients, and provide care, in the event of a natural disaster. The Disaster Relief Team prepares Miami-Dade County residents for a natural disaster, responds to emergency medical needs during and after a disaster, and connects residents with medical and psychological services in their communities.

The Schmidt College of Medicine has ties to this organization. First year medical student, Olivia Beale currently volunteers her time as a Medical Supplies Coordinator. The program is supported by volunteers, like Olivia, in addition to donations provided by generous students, residents, psychologists, and physicians in the community. The donated supplies go directly towards treating Miami-Dade County residents during a time of hardship and catastrophe. Suggested donations include: basic first aid supplies, gloves, masks, glucometers, glucose test strips (compatible with glucometers), BP meters, fans, and mini-coolers. Feel free to donate other supplies beneficially for providing care. Your donation can make a difference in the lives of the 2.6 million people that reside within Miami-Dade County.
