Ironman Thank You
Dear Saint Paul's Family,

Wow, it was an incredibly fun and heartwarming Ironman Weekend at Saint Paul's and we built lots of community. We have received so many messages of appreciation for the delicious, homemade dinner and sweets, the church opening the doors to athletes and their families and friends on race morning, the volunteers greeting and caring for athletes dropping off their gear bags on race morning, and the spectators cheering on runners at our cheer station and sharing ice and popsicles with the hot and tired athletes. Most of all, the athletes and fans have expressed a deep gratitude for the love and hospitality that the extended by each person they encountered in our church. In the words of one athlete "your church is hands down the most gracious, kind, supportive, generous people in the world!" and another who expressed, "How about serving and loving the community! Loved it!"

Special thanks to our clergy and staff and the members of the Saint Paul's outreach committee for their hard work in planning and supporting this event and to the following parishioners who served as captains of our different Ironman events this year: Eric Friedman, Pasta Dinner Captain and Hospitality Morning Captain; George Barrett, Swim Gear Drop Captain; Susan Muir and Martha Scroggs, Set-Up Captains; and Emily and Chris Blanco, Cheer Station Captains.

My heartfelt thanks to each and every person who contributed to the success by cooking, setting up, baking, shopping, organizing bags at swim gear drop off, making coffee, refilling drinks, clearing tables, washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, giving directions, cheering, offering ice and popsicles, making signs with words of encouragement, giving directions, offering a smile or kind word, etc.... This weekend was a success because this church and every parishioner was intentional about living out the commandment to love our neighbor. I am so proud to be a part of such a beautiful community.

The Inquirers Class is for anyone who is interested in a fresh look at their faith , at "the Faith", and at the Episcopal way of being Christian. The short book Your Faith, Your Life: An Invitation to the Episcopal Church will supplement and shape our conversations. All are welcome to drop in at any single session that piques your interest.

CHILDREN

WEAVING GOD'S PROMISES -- Ages 8-11 or Grades 3 - 5
Leader: Coleman Graham and company
Location: Blue Room, Children's Ministries Center

Our bigger children will immerse themselves in an Episcopal formation experience rooted in the stories of our faith as presented in Matthew's Gospel. In this first of a three-year cycle, our children encounter the story of our salvation from the fall to our redemption and how we fit into the story. Our theme in this curriculum year is "God loves us and stays with us-no matter what." Every session incorporates theology and history from our Episcopal-Anglican perspective. Questions??? Contact Coleman Graham or Fr. John.

GODLY PLAY -- 4s to 8, Kindergarten thru 2nd grade
Leaders: Kim Butler & Ivey Coleman
Location: Godly Play Room, Children's Ministry Center

We take children and their relationship with God seriously and seek to provide both space to foster encounters with God and the language necessary to make meaning of those experiences. Within the Godly Play classroom, the Biblical narrative is lovingly presented to children using beautiful materials with an invitation to step into each story with awe and wonder. Children are then allowed time to respond to and reflect on their experience of the story.

Adults are welcome to tour the classroom at any time, but on Sunday mornings we ask that parents do not enter the room. The classroom, and the children's time in them, is sacred. Please help us maintain this sacred space and time by staying with your children outside of the classroom until the doorkeeper invites them in.

Remember to practice these "best ways" discussed at our orientation session. Arrive between 9:25 AM and 9:30  AM. Pick up is 10:25-10:30  AM. Take a Parent Page from the table so you can talk your child about "their work" and wonder with them throughout the week about the sacred story. Questions??? Contact Kim Butler, Ivey Coleman, or Fr. John. We will host another parent & grandparent orientation soon!
Next Week October 1 - October 7
Hurricane Florence Relief
As many of you know the Diocese of East Carolina, where much of the storm damage occurred, is my home diocese.  I know from numerous conversations with laity and clergy in the diocese that the needs are great as the Church reaches out to help those most affected.  If you would like to make a donation through Saint Paul's, please either send a check (or place in the alms basin Sunday) or give online via our website saintpauls.org.  Please make note on all gifts that they are for hurricane relief.
