July Ice Cream Social Success!
|
Many neighbors new and old, attended the July Ice Cream Social.
Our Ward III Council people were in attendance also. Dorothy Richmond and her able and talented assistants Belle Tom and Rose Elias brought gourmet sauces, nuts and cookie crumbles, and cherries for toppings. Rose, a wonderful artist, made the signs and decorations, and brought the food-saving cooler. Lots of work for a wonderful get together. We owe them a big thank you!!
After the ice cream came the serious meeting where the following was discussed:
- Board approval of the proposal to Tucson Clean and Beautiful for $$ for water harvesting work on Grant Road remnant parcels
- Left turn lane on park from Grant Road and excessive lighting
- Land Use committee reports loss of one contributing property to tall fence
- Saturday clean ups at Edison Parklet moved to 7am...all welcome
- No Red Tags in June
- Amendment for Southwest Gas substation moved to south side of Banner Greenway signed-Thank you Banner and SW Gas
- Initial review of art work/historic signage for Banner north greenway set for mid-August
- Hampton chicane installed - traffic mitigation from Grant Road
- International School new Head of School-Kevin Brown, IGA for playground/public park approved by Mayor and Council (see following article)
- Vacant and neglected structures north side of grant 1300-1700. City will rent and send landscape works to vacant lots.
- T-shirt fundraiser coming up in November
- White paper for the Campbell/Grant development postponed til September

JPNA to submit application for Water Harvesting
Adjacent neighbors' consent needed
|
JPNA approved an application to Tucson Clean and Beautiful. The proposal will ask for water harvesting basins to collect water from the alley south of the Grant Road remnant parcels from Park to Santa Rita. Part of the application requests consent forms from adjacent homes, so volunteers will be visiting homes on Edison which back on the proposed park to give their consent.
Our neighboring neighborhoods have long supported the concept of green space and volunteers have assisted JP with its basins along Vine. Banner Health will soon have their promised green space on Lester completed.

Kevin Brown, MEd. (Inclusive Education) is the new
Head of School of our International School (aka Jefferson Park School). He is an experienced Teacher, Middle and Senior leader and has worked in multicultural schools in the UK and the Middle East. He worked in vocational education and with disaffected children.
Before moving into education he served with the UK Royal Air Force and traveled extensively worldwide before moving into educational business and software development including the support of a US based charity; TOC for Education; based in Florida.
"My family is part of the whole Tucson community with my wife studying at the University and my two children attending the school.
Outside work I enjoy martial arts, hiking, running and travelling; when I am not playing soccer with my two boys."

rom David Burbank, TDOT Project Manager for the Phase 2 Grant Road Project:
* Anticipated completion of the construction from Hampton to Santa Rita is Sept 17.
* TEP will move the telephone pole in alley (behind 900 block) to allow garbage pickup to return to alley for Hampton residents.
* The chicane will feature a sign that discourages entrance into the neighborhood

* The exit from the Sausage Deli will be left turn only (pictured sign will be changed).
The remnant parcels will be graded by Markham Construction before they leave. JPNA is submitting a grant for stormwater harvesting which will create basins and define a walking/bike path through the parcel. We also await news of the grant to the Tohono O'odham with support of mayor Rothschild and Farhad Moghini, of the RTA.

UA begins serving beer/wine September 1

"The UA will offer beer and wine sales to all patrons of legal drinking age starting with the Arizona Wildcats opening football game against Brigham Young University on Sept. 1. The UA was granted an extension of premises for its existing license by the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control on July 24, following inspections by three City of Tucson agencies.
|
Beer and wine sales are the latest in a series of enhancements Arizona Athletics and the university have made to improve the fan experience, including expanding performances by the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, adding local food vendors and reducing ticket prices for certain sections. Other efforts involve introducing new seating in the ZonaZoo student sections on the stadium's east side, and several new restroom and concession areas on the lower south side.

The UA will contract with a professional, licensed concessionaire experienced in selling and serving alcohol in a highly regulated and controlled environment. There will be a limited number of concession stands with alcohol sales, which will begin 90 minutes before kickoff and conclude before the end of the third quarter."

Banner Construction and Campbell Avenue

Construction Alert and Update
Banner, UA, and Neighborhood teams:
- Campbell Ave. roadwork continues with median work on both North and South sides of Elm Street beginning Thursday, August 9 and continuing through the end of August. Two lanes of traffic on Campbell Ave. will remain open at all times. We will be extending the left turn lane on the North bound side of Campbell South of Elm and are removing a portion of the bullnose median on the North side of Elm to facilitate vehicle turns both in and out for the newly constructed Elm Street.
- We are trending for completion of the North side of Elm Street and the Ring Road to Warren Ave. with adjoining sidewalk in early September. We then begin construction of the South side of Elm with completion November 30, 2018
- Structural steel erection at the new front entry of the hospital starts the week of August 6, 2018
- Demolition at the remaining BRL buildings resumes in early September, 2018, this allows us to construct the new ring road, main entry loop and parking lot to the new hospital. The construction of the new Ring Road, parking lot and entry to the hospital will limit vehicle traffic to westbound only from Warren Ave. to Garage C. and will shift Garage C pedestrian traffic to the North side of the ring road. Campus map below shows newly constructed roads and parking lots, attached as well for your use.
- North and East retention basins/green space are rough graded to final elevations, this dirt was used for over lot site fill at the new hospital entry, customer and patient parking and new Emergency Room drop off
- South retention basin excavation for water storage tanks will begin the week of August 6, 2018, a new parking lot will be installed directly above the storage tanks. Trucks will be transporting dirt out of the retention area onto Cherry Ave., flagmen will control traffic and water trucks will control dust

Your street parking overtaken?

Residential Parking Permit Program - $48, $60 or $72 Annually:
- Residential permits are available for properties not exceeding four (4) units.
- Number of permits issued is based on a property's frontage.
- Parking allowed only on the block face of the address the permit is issued to.
- In most cases, residents can receive two visitors passes, depending on property restrictions. The first visitors pass is free but the second visitors pass is the same cost as the initial affixed permit. A visitor pass is a plastic card, which allows it to be moved from guest vehicle to guest vehicle as needed. When parking with a visitors pass, visitors may only park within the same block of the residence for which it is issued.
- Visitors passes will expire 1 year from the date of issue. Please note that it is the resident's responsibility to renew their parking permits every year when they are due to avoid any parking citations.
- If lost, a replacement permit can be issued for a prorated permit fee. In the case of a stolen permit, a resident can bring a police report to our office and a replacement permit will be issued at no charge with the same expiration date as the original permit.

Do More Blue - but carefully
|
Tucson is losing money on recycling. Some of the losses are due to factors we can't control, like the market for recyclables in China. Other aspects of the problem are within our control. Please take a moment to review what is accepted in our recycling program https://www.tucsonaz.gov/files/es/DMBE_FlyerENG_web.pdf.
Don't put anything in the blue barrel unless it's on the list. Please also make sure to keep food residue out of the blue barrel. That means all those cans and bottles and milk jugs and juice boxes need to be washed out. No pizza boxes or any other cardboard that has been in contact with food. No Styrofoam or other fast food containers.

Did you know? As of July 1, 2015 Tucson Water has made two important additions to their rebate program.
Customers can claim rebates on rain gardens that harvest storm water from the street! These street side features, which were previously excluded from the rebates, qualify as passive water-harvesting systems that are eligible for rebates of up to $500.
The other exciting change allows multi-family and small commercial customers to access the rebates too. This applies to any property with a 3/4" meter or smaller (contact Tucson Water if you are unsure of your meter size).
The
Tucson Water Rainwater Harvesting Rebate
will reimburse up to $2,000 for residential rainwater-harvesting systems. This includes systems installed through our Co-op. To qualify for the rainwater harvesting rebate, the system must have been installed after September 27, 2011. Visit the City of Tucson website for further information about the residential rainwater harvesting rebate program.
The
Tucson Water Greywater Harvesting Rebate
will reimburse up to $1,000 for residential greywater systems. To qualify for the greywater rebate, the system must have been installed after January 1, 2013. (Systems installed after January 1, 2011 still qualify for the lower rebate amount of 1/3 of costs, up to $200.) Attending this session or any WMG Co-op greywater workshop fulfills the required educational session for this rebate. Visit the City of Tucson website for further information about the

Tucson Parks and Recreation Guide for Fall

Tucson Parks and Recreation Activity Guide for fall 2018 and spring 2019 is now online (link below). Beginning Monday, July 30, printed copies will be available at any Parks and Recreation center, pool, or administration office. Copies also will be available at local libraries.
The new version of the guide combines two guides in one. It features programs, classes, and events taking place from August 2018 through April 2019. The Activity Guide contains information on leisure classes, KIDCO afterschool, aquatics, sports programs, special events, recreation center locations and amenities, and registration.

Collision Reporting Center Speeds Ins. Claims
|
|
FIRST COLLISION REPORTING CENTER IN ARIZONA OPENS IN TUCSON - Motorists involved in minor accidents have a new way to report vehicle damage, obtain a police report, and speed insurance claims. The Tucson Police Department (TPD) this week announced a partnership with Canada-based Accident Support Services International Ltd. (ASSI) to operate the first Collision Reporting Center in Arizona. The free service is offered to people who've experienced non-injury collisions within Tucson city limits.
If you're involved in a traffic collision, please call 911 first. The operator will determine if a police response is needed or if the parties involved will be transferred to an ASSI representative at the center for further instructions. The Collision Reporting Center can take statements, complete a state-mandated police report, and photograph the damage. This one-stop reporting process allows the information to be provided to TPD, the state, and your insurance carrier at the same time.
