Warriors of the Week
Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth. This week's Warriors of the Week are:

6th
Chloe O.
Chloe goes out of her way to help others. When a student couldn't get into her locker, Chloe gave up part of her lunch period to help the student and ultimately found a teacher for the student to be able to help.

7th
Carter B.
Carter displayed empathy offering his seat up during a class activity to a student who was having difficulties seeing. He also investigated the curriculum deeper and his engagement led to a presentation that explored his interest and talents relating to class content. THIS WASN'T EVEN ASSIGNED!

8th
Wren B.
Wren is polite, respectful and helpful. She has been extremely helpful with students that are new to the district this year.

Drop-off and Pick-Up Reminders
Drop-off and dismissal procedures have been running smoothly.  Please continue to drive safely and use the one-way system through the parking lot.  Students may still be dropped/collected on W. 213th, in front of the main high school entrance - this does help us alleviate traffic.  If you need a reminder about campus traffic, revisit Principal Vicha's Oscar-worthy performance in this informational PSA video :

Parking Lot Safety at Fairview High School
Parking Lot Safety at Fairview High School

Many families have opted for meeting at off-campus locations, such as the library, Giant Eagle, Dunkin Donuts and Bain Park.  We ask that you do not park outside the entrance to Fairview Public Library, as this has been affecting their visitors and traffic flow through the lot.
Appointments/Early Dismissal
When collecting your student for an appointment during the school day, you will need to collect them at the High School main office.  Students should report to Mrs Lockwood (Attendance Secretary) to sign out for the day, and then will wait in the main office for their parents.
Fairview Park PTA Council Reflections Art Program
The Ohio PTA, through National PTA, holds an annual cultural arts program, Reflections. Children in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit original works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film production and music composition. The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity as they reflect on the yearly theme. Teachers, parents, children and community can get involved in enhancing arts education though the Reflections program. The Reflections Program is one of the best examples of the PTA's ability to bring out the best in our youth. PTA strongly supports education in the arts. It is about creating educational excitement and involvement within our schools between parents, teachers and o ur kids.

Students can enter Reflections® in the following grade divisions - Primary: preschool-grade 2, Intermediate: grades 3-5, Middle/Junior: grades 6-8 and Senior: grades 9-12. They may submit works in any of the six arts areas: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual arts, Dance Choreography, and Film Production. Special Artists can submit entries in any category. Our Reflections program begins at the local level, advances to PTA Council level, then to State for judging. The State winners of the Award of Excellence are then advanced to National PTA.

This year's theme is " Heroes Around Me." All students that wish to participate in the Reflections Art Program need to fill out the entry form and return it along with their original artwork to their school office by November 1, 2018. All participants will be invited to an Art Show to view the masterpieces created in January. Questions can be emailed to Angie Cause at angiekleincause@yahoo.com. Good luck!

Student Progress Text Messages
You will soon begin to receive automated text messages that summarize your student's academic progress.  The messages give you tips on how best to speak with your child when it comes to the nitty-gritty of their learning tasks here at school, so that you can best support your student in their learning at home.

Parents will receive, on average, 2 messages per week that are triggered by their own child's academic calendar and performance.  Messages are available in English and Spanish.

Here's an in-depth overview of what you can expect from the messages.

Library Card Sign-Up Month
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning.

In celebration of Library Card Sign-up month, we are encouraging all students in grades K - 12 who live in Cuyahoga County to sign up for a free library card and take advantage of one-time fine forgiveness at any Cuyahoga County Public Library branch from September 1 through 30.

Homework Help at the Library
Cuyahoga County Public Libraries offers free after-school homework help to students in grades K-8. Students can receive assistance in language arts, math, reading, science, social studies and other subjects from the Library's trained staff at no cost. Learn more at cuyahogalibrary.org/homework .

There will be a Homework Mentor Open House on Wednesday, September 19 from 3:30 - 5:30 pm at the Fairview Park Branch. Meet the trained mentor and discover resources available to your child. The entire family is welcome.

FACE Corner (Family and Community Engagement)

We have been in school a few weeks now. Hopefully the routines are going smoothly and everyone is getting enough sleep. How are the grades looking? How is everyone doing on their platform? Are they on target with the blue line?

Ask your child to show you these things so you can see where they are.  If the grades aren't up to par and you are seeing your child struggle, what should you do?

The first contact you should make is with your child's teacher and/or mentor teacher.  They will be able to give you the best and most up-to-date information. If after two weeks you are still not seeing an improvement, contact your child's counselor.  Together you can come up with a solution about how to best help your child.

Also, please don't forget to check the district calendar for upcoming Personalized Learning Platform Workshop meetings where you can learn how to see where your child is on the platform!

Any questions, please email me at csullivan@fairview.k12.oh.us
Have a great week!
