Tyner's Top 10
Sea Kings,

This year we are introducing a new weekly newsletter called "Tyner's Top 10" in honor of our principal Dr. Tyner. Each week Dr. Tyner will focus on 10 things happening here at PVHS to highlight our students, staff, and all of the amazing things happening on campus. We will also show the upcoming week at a glance with information about any bell schedules or main events happening on campus.

Enjoy!
1. Academics Spotlight
What may seem like your average, beautiful, day in PV, makes perfect conditions for Mr. Warren's physics classes to gain some hands on experience with rockets. Students each took a part in timing, launching, measuring, and calculating multiple rocket launches and relating the experiment to basic physics principles. The best part, students' reactions after it launches, click here to see the live video!
2. Athletics Spotlight
PVHS football is now 1-3 after a great game on Friday versus Culver City. The Sea Kings won 37-36 and have their next home game on Friday at 3pm versus Newbury Park.

Boys and girls cross country are each currently ranked first in CIF.

Girls Volleyball beat Mira Costa in 4 games defeating the Mustangs. Their next home game is Thursday.

Girls Tennis lost to Corona del Mar this week 10-8. They look forward to league play this week with matches against Mira Costa and Redondo.

Girls Golf defeated West 198-217 at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Megan Gormley had the low score for all golfers with a even par 35. PV Meg Yoshida shot one over par 36.   PV is now 2-1.

Boys Water Polo hosted their first ever tournament and won the championship game against Mira Costa. Congrats boys on being the S&R Sport D2 Showcase winners!
3. Activities Spotlight
This week our Junior Varsity and Varsity Song and Cheer teams welcome over 75 TK-8th grade students to the Sea King family. Students participated in two clinics led by PVHS students to learn different cheers, dances, and stunts. All students performed at halftime of the football game together to show their Sea King pride and represent what it means to be #onehill. The next winter clinic is January 9-11th. If anyone would like to sign up please contact Ms. Maxfield at maxfieldj@pvpusd.net
4. Fine Arts Spotlight
Drama class is not just about acting, but about preparing students for real life. Mrs. Thompson takes the opportunity every year in the fall to have students participate in mock college interviews. Seniors in drama answer interview questions that Mrs. Thompson has collected from various colleges such as UCLA and more. The community environment in her classroom then allowed students to provide feedback and suggestions to their peers based on their answers. Great job Mrs. Thompson for offering countless opportunities for our students!
5. College and Career Center
Our CCC hosted another amazing opportunity for our students and families in their annual College Fair. What was different about this event was the focus on out of state schools. Students got to hear presentations from schools like the University of Oregon, Purdue, TCU, and many more.

Save the date for their next event, Financial Aid: Paying for College, Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 6:30pm in the MPR.
6. Senior Parent Presentation
This week our counselors hosted our senior parent presentation and senior guidance lessons to prepare all our families for the college application process. Students and parents learned about the differences in schools, application information, the letter of recommendation process and more. Our counselors found creative ways to engage out students and even created a Kahoot to review all of the information learned.
7. Student Spotlight
Wesley Park, senior, has many roles on campus. As drum major he leads our entire marching band during every game. This huge responsibility is awarded to one or two students every year. Wesley is also the team captain for the PVIT UAV team and also got the opportunity to intern at Boeing over the summer.
8. School Site Council
Are you interested in serving on the School Site Council? We are looking for two parent volunteers. This Council provides importance guidance in the operations of our campus. If you are interested, please email Dr.Tyner at tynera@pvpusd.net by Thurs, Sept 20 th .
9. Back to School Night
Please join us this Thursday, September 20th from 6:30-8:20 pm for our annual Back to School Night event. Health and Wellness

Whether or not our children are experimenting with, dabbling in, or heavily involved with drug or alcohol use is a cause of great concern and anxiety for most parents. The sad fact is that we often are unaware, and either fail to see the warning signs, or our fears drive us to deny potential red flags. It is a frightening statistic, but it takes parents, on average, two years to fully uncover problematic substance abuse. By that time, much harmful effects may have taken hold. Following will be some of the signs and symptoms to look for. However, two caveats. One, these are indicators of possible use, but may be issues related to other physical or emotional problems. Second, I believe it is essential for you to think about, and have a philosophy about how to deal with information pointing to use. Do you have a zero tolerance policy? If so, what does that mean, if you find out there has been experimentation? You (and your spouse) should be on the same page, and be clear about what directions you will take. Are you more interested in keeping lines of communication open? Do you believe that experimentation is normal and you accept it? Do you believe that as long as they are using, they should do it in the safety of your home (yes, some parents believe that). I am not judging or telling you which approach/belief you should have, just informing that it is important to have a clear approach to this subject. One last bit of advice: your children need a caring, limit-setting parent when it comes to their decisions to use drugs or alcohol, not a friend. They have plenty of friends willing to tell them what to do.

What are some signs and symptoms that your child may be using drugs or alcohol?

1. Physical Evidence. Finding drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, plastic bagginess, vaping devices, small glass vials, bongs, rolling papers. If you find marijuana in their backpack, they will always say it belongs to a friend – it never does.

2. Physical changes, including fatigue, change in sleep patterns, muscle aches and pains, weight loss, bruises, blood shot eyes, poor hygiene

3. Behavioral changes, including change in friends, avoidance of old friends, withdrawal, isolation, increase in moodiness and arguing, defiance of rules, vague about whereabouts, sudden status with peers.

4. Academic issues, including grades unexpectedly and suddenly slipping, increased absences, difficulty concentrating, reduction in motivation to perform, change in attitude towards teachers.

5. Drug and alcohol curiosity, including interest in pro drug music and literature, wearing pro drug jewelry, hats, shirts, increase in pro marijuana and pro drug discussions, exploring internet sites.

As I mentioned, many of these signs are indicative of issues other than drug or alcohol use, but they are red flags that should not be ignored, should be dealt with and discussed openly, and if concern arises, consider getting professional advice.
