Project Update: Performance Enhancing Devices for Stormwater BMPs
The Center for Watershed Protection led a three-year project to research the capability of “performance enhancing devices” or PEDs to boost the performance of standard stormwater best management practices (BMPs) for removal of specific pollutants.
Staff Profile: Meet Chris
Marlyn Argueta interviews Chris Swann, Environmental Analyst & CIO.

How did you get started working on watersheds?
I started mostly through an interest in science and natural resources. In college, I had a really great Natural Resource program manager who got how a lot of different disciplines went into watershed management, including things like business management and communications. Then an opportunity for an internship at the Center opened up, and I have been living the dream ever since.

What is your favorite part about working for the Center?
The variety of projects and opportunities to learn new skills are a big plus. Being able to work on the number of topics that are related to watershed management helps you see the big picture and how everything fits together. The Center also allows me to learn new things on a daily basis from my CWP colleagues.

Now for the silly questions. At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?
Lidz

What was your favorite TV show when growing up?
I refuse to answer on the grounds that I will really date myself. Let’s go with something generic like Scooby-Doo mysteries.

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Which sea creature is your favorite?
Deep Sea Dragonfish

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?
Curate my collection of pocket protectors and protractors.

What is your favorite river?
As a parent I have learned not to play favorites. I love all rivers equally.

What’s the strangest talent you have?
The ability to fill out staff questionnaires.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
It seems like the ability to see the future would be best. Then I could get winning lottery numbers on a regular basis.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
That would depend entirely on how much I won. Hopefully with my superpower from the previous question it would be a Powerball drawing.

What do you want to make sure you do before you die?
Develop a cure for death.

New Videos and Website for the Clean Water Certificate Training Program
We are excited to announce the launch of the new Clean Water Certificate (CWC) Training Program website, https://www.cwp.org/cwc/ made possible with the continued support of the Keith Campbell Foundation. The CWC training program provides high quality training opportunities that promotes job growth, delivers job-readiness skills and knowledge to under- and unemployed individuals, and creates a pathway for local businesses to hire these individuals into family-supporting careers. The website features new videos from our partners and a program graduate, along with our growing list of partners to include: Civic Works Baltimore Center for Green Careers, Montgomery County Conservation Corps, Latin American Youth Center in DC, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Work2LiveWELL program. As of July, 2018, we have implemented three, Level 100 CWC training courses in Baltimore, MD and one, pilot Level 200 CWC training course in Washington, DC. To date, 83% of the enrollees graduate with 78% placement in a stormwater job. The future is looking bright for these program graduates as they secure living wage jobs in a growing industry!

Webcast 5: Innovations in Stream Restoration Design and Construction
Stream restoration has been used for many years and with various objectives and outcomes. As the use of stream restoration has become more widespread, restoration professionals have gathered experience and knowledge on the techniques that are better suited for use based on geographically area or climatic conditions. This webcast will explore several case studies where changes in stream design or construction were necessary to address local conditions and how those modifications may be applied in other locations to create a successful project.
