FAR-Supported Summer Camp Encourages Children's Interest in Science

Sun observations and planet gazes were the must-do activities at Byurakan Science Camp this year. The summer camp held at Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory hosted 50 children (aged 9 to 14). FAR has supported the camp for five years. It enables children to combine study and leisure, art and science through different mediums. On one day, campers may hear lectures about astrophysics and civil rights. On another day, they may visit churches and castles, draw pictures or make videos.

"We hope that the days spent here and the knowledge we deliver will encourage children to be interested in astronomy, or at least in science," said Camp Coordinator Sona Farmanyan. To learn more, go to: LINK

Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak

On Sunday, October 1, Armenian Christians worldwide will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak-an observance unique to the Armenian Church.

In the 7th century, a monk named Totig received a vision of a brilliant cross descending from Mount Varak in historic Armenia, and coming to rest on the monastery at the mountain's foot. Totig raced to where the vision had led him, and there found a miraculous Christian relic: a fragment of the True Cross of Jesus Christ!

How had it gotten there? The relic had been brought to Armenia by St. Hripsime, in the late 3rd century, during her flight to find refuge from the persecutions of pagan Rome. When St. Hripsime was martyred by King Drtad, the hiding place of the cross was forgotten-and the holy relic had languished in its secret place for nearly 300 years, before being found again by the monk Totig.

To commemorate this discovery, the catholicos of the time, St. Nersess the Builder, established a feast day. And the Holy Cross became a relic of great power in Armenia, moving from Varak to Sepastia and finally to Van, where it still could be seen by pilgrims-until the time of the Genocide.

A Celebration of Armenia's Independence Day

The 27th Anniversary of Armenia's Independence Day was celebrated at St. Mary with a special Thanksgiving Prayer Service for the Republic of Armenia on Sunday, September 23. The service took place immediately after Badarak and was presided by H. E. Abp. Vicken Aykazian.

At the conclusion of the Thanksgiving Prayer parishioners and friends enjoyed a beautiful program at the church hall co-hosted by St. Mary Parish Council and the Knights and Daughters of Vartan. The program included an interesting presentation by  Mr. Arsen Mikayelyan, Newly Appointed Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Washington, DC, as well as beautiful performances and reception by St. Mary's young members Andre Alexandrian, Anayis Chubukian and Hovsep Seferian.

The rebirth of the Armenian homeland is one of the most momentous developments in the history of the Armenian people. Armenia's citizens voted for independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991, and the resulting free republic became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992.

ACYOA Juniors Fall Cookout

The ACYOA Juniors teen youth group held a pot luck dinner on September 22nd at the home of Der Hayr and Yn Jennifer Karapetyan.  The group enjoyed volleyball and basketball, practicing for the upcoming Fall Sports Weekend event in New York.  Teens also participated in a devotional Bible Study lead by Becky Bagdasarian.

Parents took the opportunity to discuss event planning for the upcoming year. It was a wonderful time of seeing old friends and making new ones!  A special thanks goes out to all the youth advisers, the parents, and Der Hayr and Yn for making the evening special.

Food Festival Preparations

Our loyal Women's Guild members and volunteers have once again devoted the entire month of September to preparing for the St. Mary 70th Annual Armenian Fall Food Festival. They have prepared hundreds of delicious food items in the kitchen as we have enjoyed the aromas throughout the church. The authentic Armenian dishes are from recipes that have long been part of our proud heritage and we are ever so grateful for their time, energy, and skills. Our heartfelt thanks to each and everyone of them.

There is still an opportunity for you to contribute by volunteering to one of the remaining workshops or during the Food Festival days!

St. Vartan Cathedral Welcomes Armenia's Prime Minister

It was an afternoon of great anticipation on Wednesday, September 26, as New York's St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral awaited the arrival of Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

In the presence of the visiting Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II, Mr. Pashinyan was welcomed to the cathedral by the Primate of the Eastern Diocese, the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan.

At the cathedral, the Primate delivered welcoming remarks in Armenian to the Catholicos and Prime Minister. "Vehapar Der; Prime Minister Pashinyan: In this cathedral we pray for our Republic; we pray for our people; we pray for you, that God may guide you, so that you may guide our people through this season of change in our national life, and lead our Republic to a bright new day for every Armenian," he said.

Catholicos Karekin II addressed the gathering as did Prime Minister Pashinyan, both expressing gratitude for their reception.

Mr. Pashinyan's visit concluded his trip to New York City to address the United Nations General Assembly. He was also an honored guest at the opening of the "Armenia!" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since the establishment of the Republic of Armenia in 1991, St. Vartan Cathedral has welcomed every Armenian head of state, as well as numerous officials and dignitaries from the republic's government.

Catholicos Presides Over Opening of "Armenia!" at the Met

His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, was in New York this week to preside over the official opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Armenia!" exhibit. The opening reception took place on the evening of Monday, September 24.

Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was an honored guest on the occasion. Among the dignitaries gathering with officials of the museum were Diocesan Primate Fr. Daniel Findikyan, former Primate and current Envoy of Holy Etchmiadzin to the Vatican Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, and Diocesan Legate and Ecumenical Director Archbishop Vicken Aykazian.

In a ceremony, Catholicos Karekin II presented exhibit curator Dr. Helen Evans with the distinguished "St. Sahag-St. Mesrob Medal."

On Thursday, September 20, at the preview for New York media, Fr. Findikyan blessed the exhibition hall. Stressing that the items on display represent high points of Christian art, he said that the exhibit is "inspired by the spiritual wealth of the Armenian people, including our past tragic circumstances, but also our highest spiritual aspirations."

The exhibit will be on view through January 13, 2019. Click on the following links to  read more, and to  view a photo gallery of the exhibit opening, and to  view photos from the press preview.

Farmers' Cooperative Brings Positive Change to Village Life

Three years ago, Andranik Dumanyan happily drove six hours roundtrip to pick up a new tractor that would benefit his village of Artsvaberd in Armenia's Tavush Province. The 46-year-old mechanic, who harvests grass for livestock feed, had always done harvesting work manually. His production would be significantly enhanced with the new tractor.

The tractor-with attachments suited for plowing, chopping, collecting, and seeding-was designed to ease work in the fields. It was the first major purchase of the Artsvaberd Agricultural Cooperative-made possible by the joint efforts of the Fund for Armenian Relief and Armenia's Ministry of Agriculture.

Coop members are quite pleased with the result, which has had a huge impact on the expansion of village farm lands. Currently, all 400 hectares of arable land are in use; in the past, only 100 hectares could be used with the limited tools available. Now, Artsvaberd community farmers can work the land more quickly and efficiently.

Մարկոս 10:1-12

And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again; and again, as his custom was, he taught them. And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away." But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, `God made them male and female.' `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.' So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."
