The bad news is we had to postpone our Walk-a-thon until next Friday, October 5th. The good news is we now have an extra week to raise additional funds! Isn't that great?

Mrs. DeMars (among her other duties) has been plowing through the returns but we don't have a total yet. Our school goal is $25,000. Remember, we conduct only two major fundraisers each year and 100% of the money stays at SMA, with very little overhead deducted. So, if you missed the boat the first time (for whatever reason) with this Walk-a-thon, you've got another chance. And if you've already donated, but you thought of someone else who might support the mission, you've got time to reach out. Our goal, divided by 362 families, comes out to right around $69.00 per family. That individual family goal  may be a bit too much for some, but for others, very achievable. I know if we all work together, and we all do our best ("no dead weight," I tell the students), we can make that goal. Go SMA!

Today, Progress Reports went home to parents of students in Grades 1-8. Last week, I mentioned that you need to look at them, keeping in mind it was a quick five weeks, especially with the heat shortened days. However, they do give insight into how our students have started out the year. Please take time to review them with your child and encourage them to listen to the teacher and do their best. We'll be having Parent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November 6th, but if you feel a need to have one sooner, please let the teacher know.

Finally, thank you for your attendance at this year's Back to School Night meeting for parents. If you were able to make it, you heard a very informational presentation about our new Mindfulness program at SMA. Many children have difficulty settling their bodies, focusing on their work and managing their emotions. Through this program, we hope to help students in these areas. (By the way, we had 29% of our families represented at the meeting.)

Enjoy a nice weekend.

God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Congrats to this week's winners and one from a previous week!

Service To Others

"Go, do not be afraid, and serve."
Pope Francis, World Youth Day, Rio

In fifth grade, we have been talking about Jesus's mission and how he lived a life of service to others.

Students have been learning about ways they can serve others. Some of the ideas discussed included saying kind things to others, helping younger siblings, taking care of elderly neighbors and praying.  Students enjoyed playing a game that centered around all the wonderful ways they could be of service to others.

 Grandparent Event

Grade 7 Celebrates The Feast Of St. Michael
With Grandparents

We send out a huge thank you to Msgr. Daniel Liston of St. Patrick's Church in Springfield for celebrating Mass with us on Thursday. This special Mass and grandparent event was in honor of the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel (really celebrated on September 29th) who is our school's patron saint.

We also thank our 7th grade students who did a fabulous job hosting the Mass and serving as readers, altar servers, gift bearers and choir members.

Back To School Night

Back To School Night

Our annual Back To School Night was held this week.  Each year we hold this event to update our school families on recent accomplishments and future endeavors.  It is just one of the many communication tools we use to keep parents "in the loop" of what's going on at St. Michael's Academy.

We send out a special thank you to Mrs. Mathews for doing a presentation on "mindfulness."  This new program is designed to help students to settle their bodies, focus on their work and manage their emotions.  Mrs. Mathews attended an extensive training course over the summer and is now a certified instructor for the mindfulness program.

The evening ended with some beautiful music from our choir members.

 SchoolsNEXT

  On To The Nationals!

The St. Michael's Academy 2018 winning SchoolsNEXT team competed yesterday in the national competition via Skype for business.

Jada Flint, Michael Langone, Daniel Sears, and Declan Sears represented St. Michael's Academy to an international jury. These former students showcased all they had learned, researched, and designed as part of their 8th grade SchoolsNEXT project.  Their project, The Saint Sebastian Health and Wellness Center, captured the attention of the jury comprised of professionals in the school building field including architects, manufacturers, designers, and governmental agencies.

The judges are in the process of deliberations and will make a final determination soon.  Our graduates did an amazing job representing us and we are proud of their accomplishments.

Stay tuned for further updates!

 Middle Level Dance

First Dance of the Year!

The middle level students enjoyed their first dance of the year this week. The SMA gymnasium was shaking, rattling and rolling!

 Little Women

Little Women Premiere

In support of The Parents Television Council, many members of the St. Michael's Academy "family" were able to receive free tickets to see the "Red Carpet" private showing  of the soon to be released movie "Little Women" this past Monday evening.

And what a treat we had!  The movie was fantastic!  If you are not familiar with the story, Little Women tells the story of four sisters and the individual paths that each choose to follow in life.  You will laugh and cry but most importantly, you will be entertained by this wholesome, family movie.

We extend our thanks to Michelle D'Amour and Big Y Foods and The Parents Television Council, a non-partisan education organization advocating for responsible entertainment, for bringing such a wonderful opportunity to our school!

Catholic Schools Facebook Page Launched

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dan Baillargeon has launched a new Facebook Page that will include information and photos from around the Catholic schools in the diocese.  Check it out!

Show your support for Catholic schools! Visit and "Like" the page by clicking here.

And While We Are Talking About Social Media...

Don't forget to like and share the SMA Facebook posts!  Every time you like and share, you help St. Michael's posts to be distributed to a wider audience.

And....have you gone to the SMA website (smaspringfield.org) and liked our school website as well?  While you are there, it only takes a moment to put a review in.  All of these types of things help people to learn about the mission of our school and to increase enrollment.

 Lost and Found

Lost and Found

We all know what happens....you send your child off to school with sweaters, sweatshirts, SMA vests, hats, lunch boxes, etc. and somehow when they get home, those items are not with them.  Don't forget  to have your child check the Lost and Found Box located near the elevator outside the cafeteria.  The box already has many items in it!

Also - just a reminder to write your child's name in all their belongings so that if something is misplaced, it is easily returned!

 Business Department

Before and After School Billing

The Business Department would like to remind families that any payment received after noon on Wednesdays will be applied to the next week's statement sent home with your child. Payments are processed on Wednesdays. Billing occurs from Thursday to Wednesday and new invoices are generated on Thursday.

It's easy to forget to send payments in on Monday but weekly payments are due each week.
